"Do Thế vận hội Tokyo 2020 sẽ diễn ra trong thời kỳ đại dịch, chúng tôi rất tiếc không thể cho phép người nhà của vận động viên hoặc vợ, chồng đi cùng với họ đến Thế vận hội", ban tổ chức cho biết, và thông báo thêm rằng: "Tuy nhiên, sau khi cân nhắc kỹ lưỡng về tình huống đặc biệt đối với một số vận động viên còn đang nuôi con nhỏ, chúng tôi xin xác nhận rằng, trong trường hợp cần thiết, trẻ em còn đang bú mớm sẽ có thể đi cùng các vận động viên đến Nhật Bản".

Vấn đề này trở thành tin tức sau khi vận động viên bóng rổ người Canada, Kim Gaucher, cho hay chị buộc phải quyết định giữa việc "làm mẹ cho con bú hay làm vận động viên Olympic" vì không thể đưa con gái 3 tháng tuổi đến Tokyo.

Vận động viên chạy đường dài người Mỹ Aliphine Tuliamuk cũng phàn nàn về vấn đề này, nói rằng chị "không thể tưởng tượng" được chuyện sẽ đến Thế vận hội mà không có con gái còn đang bú mớm đi cùng.

Cầu thủ bóng đá Mỹ Alex Morgan nói rằng việc "cho phép các bà mẹ có thể đưa con của họ đi cùng khi họ thi đấu" là điều quan trọng.

Ban tổ chức cho biết các trẻ em còn đang bú mớm phải ở trong các khách sạn đã được phê duyệt vì khu nhà ở của Làng Olympic là khu vực cấm đối với tất cả mọi người, chỉ trừ các vận động viên và lãnh đạo các đoàn.

Thế vận hội Tokyo 2020, bị hoãn hồi năm ngoái vì đại dịch COVID-19, sẽ bắt đầu vào ngày 23/7 tới.

TOKYO (Reuters) -- A person has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Tokyo Olympics athletes' village, organizers said on Saturday, in the first such case that adds to concerns about infections at the Games which begin next week.

Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto confirmed that a visitor from abroad who is involved in organizing the Games had tested positive. He would not reveal the person's nationality, citing privacy concerns.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, postponed for a year due to the global pandemic, is being held mostly without spectators and under tight quarantine rules.

Athletes are just starting to arrive for the Games which run July 23 through Aug. 8.

Japan's public has been lukewarm about the Games amid a resurgence in new coronavirus infections and worries that an influx of foreign visitors may help turn the Tokyo Olympics into a super-spreader event, which in turn could put further strain on Japan's already stretched medical system.

Two athletes living in the Olympic Village have become the first to test positive for COVID-19 just days before the Tokyo Games are set to begin on Friday.

Olympic organisers confirmed the positive tests on Sunday, saying the two athletes were from the same country but were not Japanese, without revealing their names or other details.

The positive tests have further stoked concerns over the virus infiltrating the tightly controlled event, in particular, the Olympic Village, meant to be a bubble for about 11,000 athletes who have travelled to Japan for the games, which were postponed from 2020 amid the pandemic.

Organisers on Sunday reported 10 new cases connected to the Olympics, including a third athlete who was not staying in the village, down from 15 new cases a day earlier.

South Africa also reported three positive cases in its football squad – two players and an analyst. It was not immediately clear if those cases were identified as part of the same testing programme.


Meanwhile, on Saturday, the first International Olympic Committee member also tested positive for COVID-19 while entering a Tokyo airport.

The committee identified the member as Ryu Seung-min of South Korea, who won an Olympic gold medal in table tennis in the 2004 Olympics. He was reportedly being held in isolation and was asymptomatic.

‘A bad sign’
Organisers say since July 1, 55 people linked to the Olympics have reported positive tests. However, the accounting does not include athletes or others who may have arrived for training camps but are not yet under the “jurisdiction” of the organising committee.

With the majority of the Japanese public already against hosting the games amid the pandemic, the most recent infections are likely to further unnerve citizens, said Jeff Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple University in Japan.

“This is a bad sign as thousands of athletes are arriving this week, and there’ll be more than 50,000 Olympic related guests also arriving, just as the Delta variant is swirling around the globe and vaccination here are just 20 percent [of the population],” he told Al Jazeera.

“A lot of things can’t be known … and the big question mark over these Olympics is that about 80 percent of the Japanese people did not think it was a good idea to go forward,” he said.

Tokyo and three neighbouring prefectures will be under a state of emergency when the games open on Friday. Fans, both from Japan and abroad, are barred from all Olympic events in those areas.

The emergency order lasts until August 22. The games close on August 8.

Tokyo recorded 1,410 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the highest in six months. It was the 28th straight day that cases were higher than seven previous days.

Tennis star Coco Gauff announced on Sunday that she would be dropping out of the Tokyo Olympic games following a positive COVID-19 test.

The 17-year-old tennis phenom from Atlanta, Georgia, wrote on Twitter that she was "so disappointed to share the news that I have tested positive for COVID and won't be able to play in the Olympic Games in Tokyo."

A Ugandan athlete who took part in pre-Olympic training camp in western Japan has gone missing, leaving a note to the effect of, "I want to work in Japan," local officials said Friday, with police now conducting a search in a case that may raise further questions about the safety of the games to be held amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Julius Ssekitoleko, a 20-year-old weightlifter staying in Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture, purchased at a local station a shinkansen (bullet train) ticket to Nagoya, about 200 kilometers away, the city said, nearly a day since the athlete was last seen.

Ssekitoleko, who missed a spot for the Olympics after arriving in Japan last month, said in the note left at his hotel that he does not want to return to Uganda because life there is difficult and asked members of his delegation to give his belongings to his wife in his home country, according to the city.

He was not at his hotel when an official attempted to receive his sample for coronavirus testing at around noon Friday, the city said, adding he was last seen at around 12:30 a.m. by a teammate.

All delegation members must submit their samples for COVID-19 testing in the morning.

The development just a week before the opening of the Olympics may fuel concerns over the anti-virus measures in place by the games' organizers, which have said athletes will only be allowed to go to limited locations and will not come into contact with locals.

The organizers have repeatedly said the Tokyo Games can be held safely, but public skepticism remains high especially due to a surge in COVID-19 infections in the Japanese capital.

The nine-member Ugandan delegation arrived at Narita airport near Tokyo on June 19 as one of the first teams to come to Japan for the games, but two members have tested positive for the coronavirus.

In a statement sent to Kyodo News, Beatrice Ayikoru, the chef de mission of the Ugandan delegation, admitted that Ssekitoleko has gone missing and said that he was due to head home with his coach next Tuesday.

"We, during our regular team briefings both in Uganda and in Japan, emphasized inter alia the need to respect the immigration regulations of Japan and not opt to leave the camp without authorization," the chief of the team said, adding it is cooperating with local authorities in trying to locate him.

The athlete answered his phone when an official in Uganda called him at around 6 p.m., but he said he was not in a situation to talk and hung up, according to the city.

The ticket to Nagoya was purchased around 6:30 a.m., it said. The central city is the prefectural capital of Aichi, where about 150 Ugandan people -- the second-largest in Japan -- were living as of late last year, according to government data released Friday.

Following the two COVID-19 cases on the team, Ugandan athletes only started training in the western Japan city last week after they had refrained from doing so.

The first Ugandan member in his 50s had tested positive for the virus upon arrival at the airport. While the remaining eight members traveled to Izumisano, a second person in their 20s was found to be infected, raising concern over Japan's border control measures.

Izumisano has not revealed whether Ssekitoleko was the member who had tested positive for the virus, citing privacy reasons.

With the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics due to start on Friday, more than 70 people associated with the Games have tested positive.

The head of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee has not ruled out cancelling the games in the light of rising infections.

How many cases are there at the Olympics?

Data collected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shows that as of 21 July, a total of 75 Covid cases had been recorded since 1 July linked to the Olympics.

This includes not just athletes, but also employees of the Olympics organising committee, of national committees and contractors and others employees and volunteers working on the games, as well as members of the media.

The majority of the cases are among Japanese contractors working at Olympic sites. However, some athletes have also tested positive.

There are strict Covid safety rules in place inside venues for both competitors and officials, and athletes and others are being tested daily.

Have Covid cases been rising in Japan?
New infections have been edging up again across Japan since late June, after an earlier surge in cases peaking in mid-May.

On 20 July, the Ministry of Health reported 3,743 new cases.

That's 1,425 cases more than the previous day, with the weekly average for new cases also up on the average for the previous week.

However, the daily numbers are not at the level they were in May, when at several points, more than 7,000 cases a day were recorded.

How will Covid change the Olympics?

In the host city of Tokyo, experts have said the daily infection rate needs to fall below 100 in order to hold the Games safely.

Case numbers did fall from mid-May, going below 400 a day. But that decline has now reversed and infections are rising sharply.

The city's health authorities reported a seven-day average of more than 1,100 cases a day on both 19 and 20 July.

A state of emergency is in force in Tokyo, and Olympic events there and in Fukushima prefecture will take place without spectators.

Miyagi and Shizuoka regions will allowed a limited number of spectators at venues.

For Tokyo, there will be specific measures in place such as limits on opening hours for bars and restaurants, and restrictions on serving alcohol.

Residents of the capital have also been advised to avoid non-essential journeys, wear masks and work from home.

How many people has Japan vaccinated?

As of 19 July, just over 34% of the country's population had been vaccinated with at least one dose - and 22% were fully vaccinated.

The US, France and Germany have between 40% and 50% of their populations fully vaccinated, and in the UK, 53% of people are fully vaccinated.

Japan only started vaccinating people in February, later than most other developed nations.

The Pfizer jab was, for some months, the only approved vaccine in Japan.

This process took longer because Japan insisted on doing its own trials alongside the tests done internationally.

Officials say this was done to build confidence in the vaccine, according to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

Historical concerns surrounding side effects have contributed to hesitancy towards inoculations in the past.

An Imperial College London study of 15 countries found that Japan had the lowest levels of trust towards the coronavirus vaccines.

The rollout has also been hampered by supply shortages and logistical hurdles.

Japanese law only permitted doctors and nurses to carry out vaccinations, but the rules were relaxed to allow dentists, paramedics and clinicians to give jabs in order to bolster the vaccine drive.

The number of doses administered daily did rise throughout May and most of June, but appears to have tailed off recently.

What other measures has Japan taken?

Japan - unlike some other countries - did not enforce strict lockdowns or completely close off its borders as soon as the pandemic hit last year.

In April 2020, the government introduced a state of emergency, although the stay-at-home guidelines were voluntary. Non-essential businesses were asked to close, but did not face penalties for not complying.

Restrictions on entry were introduced from some countries, and others were added later on, with entry now barred from 159 countries (except in special circumstances).

Although it has a large elderly population and densely-populated urban centres, Japan proved relatively successful in controlling the virus initially, and avoiding high death rates.

There were a number of theories put forward as to why this might have been, including:


high public compliance with safety measures such as mask wearing
close physical contact like hugging and kissing is generally avoided
lower rates of chronic disease like heart conditions, obesity and diabetes

However, there were outbreaks of the virus throughout 2020 and nationwide, case numbers rose sharply in the latter part of the year and into a peak this January.

At the time, the government faced criticism over a campaign encouraging domestic travel in order to boost the economy.

There'll be no fans in the stands, and less media on the ground, so when it comes to covering the Tokyo Olympics, broadcasters are relying on technology to give viewers a more vivid experience.

After the coronavirus pandemic forced the Games to be postponed for a year in 2020, many broadcasters went back to the drawing board in their plans for coverage.

Olympic Broadcasting Services have been in charge of filming and broadcasting the Games since 2008, but there's never been one like this.

"The main commitment after the postponement (was) that we would not reduce at all the scope of what we're doing," said OBS CEO Yiannis Exarchos.

In fact, OBS teams expect to film around 9,500 hours of Olympic footage at Tokyo 2020, 30 percent more than at Rio in 2016.

The footage will be distributed to television stations around the world that have broadcast rights.

Olympic broadcasts have come a long way since the first televised Games in Berlin in 1936, when three cameras captured images that were transmitted to an audience just a few kilometres away.

Broadcasters are now promising viewers an experience augmented with a range of new technology.

Among them is 3D Athlete-Tracking, a system being used by OBS that takes images from multiple cameras and combines them using artificial intelligence to show the sporting action from every angle.

"Take the 100 metres... you can go back after a few seconds and recreate the whole race by identifying the different peaks or speeds," Exarchos said.

"You start understanding how such a fast race was actually run," he said.

"This provides additional colour for commentators, but especially for viewers helps to really understand what goes on behind these incredible performances."

- 'Unprecedented detail' -

For the first time, OBS will film the entire Games in ultra-high definition (4K).

And Japanese viewers with the very latest television sets will even be able to watch in 8K.

Japan's national broadcaster NHK is a leader in the field and will be using cameras that were only recently developed.

"One of the strengths of 8K is that it displays the details of the way bodies move in unprecedented detail on the screen," said Takayuki Yamashita, of NHK's technological research centre.

But Laurent-Eric Le Lay, director of sports for French national broadcaster France Televisions warned against a "race of 'Ks."

France Televisions' innovations for the Games include visual effects that will make the studio appear to be floating on Tokyo Bay.

"We're creating a virtual glass bubble through which viewers will see Tokyo's most beautiful buildings. There's a lot of work involved in bringing this set to life."

And there are specific techniques in place to compensate for the lack of spectators at a Games where organisers have barred almost all fans because of strict anti-virus rules.

OBS has used recordings from previous Games to create ambient sound adapted to each sport for use during the competition.

- 'Service of storytelling' -

Athletes deprived of spectators will also be able to see fans cheering them on via screens in venues that will display mosaics of selfie videos sent in from around the world.

And some will be able to briefly speak to family on video screens at the end of their competition, though only for 90 seconds. While there will be video of their cheering relatives, there will be no sound.

The strict virus measures have forced many national broadcasters to send smaller teams to Japan and handle technical operations in their home countries.

France Televisions has reduced its team from the 210 in Rio to 180, partly because OBS's adoption of IP and Cloud technology allows large files to be handled remotely.

But some things, particularly athlete interviews, can't be done from afar, said Le Lay.

"I think that for French viewers, it's important that we're on the ground and not in Paris trying to speak to athletes on Skype."

And Exarchos says technology can only do so much.

"It's technology at the service of storytelling," he said.

"We love technology and we love sports. But we don't want to get carried away."

United States forward Megan Rapinoe said they "got bopped" and did "dumb stuff" as they lost their opening match to Sweden at the Olympic Games.

The world champions were stunned 3-0 in Tokyo with striker Stina Blackstenius scoring twice, before substitute Lina Hurtig added a third for Sweden.

It ended a run of 44 games unbeaten for the USA coming into the Olympics.

"I thought we were a little bit nervous, a bit tight, doing dumb stuff," Rapinoe said.

Sweden were without Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson, while the USA started with key players Rose Lavelle, Sam Mewis, Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath and Lindsey Horan.

The USA were knocked out by Sweden, who went on to win silver, on penalties in the quarter-finals five years ago.

US coach Vlatko Andonovski added: "It's obvious we put ourselves in a big hole, but we're the only ones who can get ourselves out of it.

"It's not going to be easy. We've got to get positive results in the next two games, but the fact there is still a chance [means] I know this team is not going to give up."

"There is a belief in self-sacrifice for the masses. You enjoy the pain and do things for everybody else. That is being tested with these Games. I honestly don't think any other country would have put up with this."

Japanese media, according to those with whom I spoke, are driving skepticism. Daytime news-panel shows trot out an endless roster of guests criticizing the government's decision to allow the IOC to hold the Games. Footage of Bach arriving in Tokyo and waving from the window of his car plays on endless loop. In his first visit to the Olympic Village, Bach spoke to the volunteers and referred to the Japanese people as "the Chinese people" before correcting himself.

Ishijima says, "I've never seen this level of anger, and it's spreading. It's almost 100% in the people I encounter. They're to the point where they won't even watch."

German cyclist Simon Geschke has withdrawn from Saturday's Tokyo Olympics road race after testing positive for COVID-19, his team said Friday.

Geschke was staying with the entire road race team at a hotel with teammates outside the Olympic village.

All 12 other German cyclists and team officials, who are also staying there during the Games, had previously tested negative and will undergo further tests.

"That is really bitter, to be taken out of the competition shortly before the race," the 35-year-old said. "I followed all the health rules as best as I could. Physically I feel good but emotionally this is a dark day for me."

Now all I have left is to wish the boys tomorrow a very strong race," he said.

His roommate, Emanuel Buchmann, who had previously tested negative, will undergo a further PCR test before being cleared to race.

Teammates Niklas  Arndt and  Maximilian Schachmann  are eligible to start, the team said.

This would have been Geschke's second Olympic Games after Rio de Janeiro, where he finished 13th in the time trial but did not finish the road race.

The Spanish team also suffered a COVID-19 scare on the eve of the 234 km race when a masseur tested positive for COVID-19, prompting a panicky bout of testing for the riders.

Jose Luis Lopez Cerron, president of the Spanish Cycling Federation, said the five-man team would start the race having given negative results."

They have confirmed to us that they can ride. We have received great news after the initial scare, we hope that our masseur is well," he told Spanish daily Marca.

Former world champion Alejandro Valverde will lead Spain's challenge for a medal on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Dutch rower Finn Florijn has been ruled out of the Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19 in Tokyo, the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation (KNRB) said in a Twitter post Friday.

Florijn had finished in fourth in the sixth heat of the men's single sculls race earlier on Friday, which was not enough to progress to the quarterfinals as only the top two qualify directly.

However, the 21-year-old was scheduled to take part in the repechage race on Saturday, which gives competitors another chance to qualify. But he has gone into quarantine and will no longer participate in the Games, the KNRB said.

His case comes after a staff member of the Dutch rowing team, as well as two other Dutch athletes — taekwondo competitor Reshmie Oogink and skateboarder Candy Jacobs — also tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.

The International Judo Federation confirmed on Saturday that Algerian athlete Fethi Nourine and his coach have withdrawn from the judo competition at the Tokyo Olympics to avoid facing an Israeli athlete.

In a statement, the IJF said Nourine and coach, Amar Benikhlef, "gave individual statements to media announcing their withdrawal from the competition to avoid meeting an Israeli athlete during the event."

"We worked a lot to reach the Olympics, but the Palestinian cause is bigger than all this," the 30-year-old Nourine told Algerian television. His statements were backed by Benikhlef, who admitted they had “not been lucky with the draw. We got an Israeli opponent and that's why we had to retire. We made the right decision."

The federation said both were temporarily suspended after an investigative commission "confirmed all the facts." It added that the case was assigned to its disciplinary commission for "further investigation, judgement and final sanctioning beyond the Olympic Games."

The Algerian Olympic Committee withdrew accreditation for both Nourine and Benikhlef and "plans to send them home, applying sanctions accordingly," the IJF statement said.

Not the first time

Nourine, who was due to take part in the -73kg event, has previously pulled out of other judo competitions to avoid Israeli opposition, most recently at the World Championships in Tokyo two years ago.

The phenomenon of Israeli athletes facing boycotts due to their nationality is not new. At the Tokyo Olympics, international judo was hoping to outline the progress made, but have now been hit by another public setback.

The comments by the two Algerians "are in total opposition to the philosophy of the International Judo Federation. The IJF has a strict non-discrimination policy, promoting solidarity as a key principle, reinforced by the values of judo," the federation said.

Athletes from other countries such as Egypt andIran have also previously refused to compete against Israelis, with the story of Saeid Mollaei the most high-profile. Mollaei has since defected to Mongolia and could face the Israeli in question, Sagi Muki, in the semi-finals of the men's -81kg at Tokyo 2020.

'SEXIST' Pink offers to pay Norway women’s handball team’s fines for refusing to wear bikini bottoms ahead of Tokyo 2020

US pop star Pink has jumped in to help the Norwegian women's beach handball team after they were fined for not wearing bikini bottoms.

Pink, 41, accused the European Handball Federation of being sexist after sanctioning the team.

Instead, the team wore the same shorts as their male counterparts during the European Beach Handball Championships in Bulgaria last week.

And Pink could not believe the double-standard, tweeting her support for Norway women.

She wrote: "I’m VERY proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team FOR PROTESTING THE VERY SEXIST RULES ABOUT THEIR “uniform”.

"The European handball federation SHOULD BE FINED FOR SEXISM. Good on ya, ladies. I’ll be happy to pay your fines for you. Keep it up."

Norway’s handball federation also stood by its athletes, saying: “We are very proud of these girls who raised their voices and announced that enough is enough!

“Together we will continue to fight to change the rules for clothing, so that players can play in the clothes they are comfortable with."

The team have received a lot of support since receiving a fine, not just from Pink.

Ahead of Tokyo 2020 they took to Instagram to express their gratitude, saying: "Thank you so much for all the support. We really appreciate all the love we have received. You’re the best."

After dishing out the fine a European Handball Federation statement read: “In the bronze medal game against Spain, the team of Norway played with shorts that are not according to the athlete uniform regulations defined in the IHF Beach Handball rules of the game.”

Abid Raja, Norway's minister for culture and sport described the decision as 'completely ridiculous'.

Germany gymnasts protest with full-body leotards
Germany's gymnastics team wore full-body suits during qualifications at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday in a protest against the sexualization of women in the sport.

Germany's female gymnasts took a stand against the sexualization of women in their sport by wearing unitards instead of the common bikini-cut leotards.

The team, made out of Sarah Voss, Pauline Schäfer, Elisabeth Seitz and Kim Bui, had already worn unitards during training on Thursday, but said the decision to compete in them was only made shortly before the meet.

"We sat together today and said, OK, we want to have a big competition," 21-year-old Voss said.

"As you are growing up as a woman, it is quite difficult to get used to your new body in a way.

"We want to make sure everyone feels comfortable and we show everyone that they can wear whatever they want and look amazing, feel amazing, whether it is in a long leotard or a short one."

Tokyo 2020 is the first Summer Olympics since the imprisonment of US coach Larry Nassar, who sexually abused hundreds of athletes, including superstar Simone Biles.

Voss said they wanted to become "role models" and the team's actions drew praise from their fellow athletes.

"I think it's really cool that they have the guts to stand on such a huge arena and show girls from all over the world that you can wear whatever you want," said Norwegian gymnast Julie Erichsen. "I applaud them for that."

When the team wore their unitards for the first time back in April, Seitz told DW that she hoped women in other sports would follow their lead.

"I want every woman in every sport to have the opportunity to decide by herself what she wants to wear," she said.

Outfits covering legs are authorized in international competitions but up until now they had almost exclusively been worn for religious reasons.

Germany's gymnastics team did not qualify for finals.

Candy Jacobs has been in isolation for eight days and missed the street event in skateboarding’s debut as an Olympic sport. The Netherlands athlete said she had to force officials to allow her a supervised short break for some fresh air away from her room, where the window doesn’t open.

“Not having any outside air is so inhuman,” the 31-year-old Jacobs said in a video message posted on Instagram. “It’s mentally super draining ... definitely more than a lot of humans can handle.”

Jacobs was removed from the Olympic Village and put in a quarantine facility for people at the Tokyo Games infected with the virus. On her seventh day of isolation, she said she refused to move.

After more than seven hours, she said, officials agreed she could stand at an open window under supervision for 15 minutes.

“Having that first breath of outside air was the saddest and best moment in my life,” Jacobs said.

Kristof Milak is the dominant force in swimming's butterfly event and the man who broke Michael Phelps' 10-year-old world record in the 200-meter fly at the world championships in 2019

TOKYO -- How dominant is Hungarian butterfly swimmer Kristof Milak right now? Ask his competitors at the Olympics.

Japanese silver medalist Tomoru Honda said he had zero chance of beating Milak in the 200-meter butterfly final on Wednesday. Bronze medalist Federico Burdisso of Italy rated his own chances the same.

“I think it was impossible to win this race,” Burdisso said. “Because, you know, Milak is Milak.”

One thing did threaten to knock Milak off his stride, though: A tear in his swimming shorts.

Milak noticed the hole about 10 minutes before the race, he said, leading to a late change and a loss of focus. That little tear didn't stop him powering home to win gold by nearly two seconds. But it did spoil his chances of setting a new world record at his first Olympics, Milak said.

As if to underline his disgust, Milak produced the offending pair of swim shorts from a plastic bag, poked his finger through the tear, and then threw them down on a table.

"I have a routine, a rhythm," Milak said through a translator. “I am in focus but this situation broke my focus and that problem caused the time.”

The time was still a new Olympic record of 1 minute, 51.25 seconds. But with the gold medal effectively in the bag — no one disputes that — Milak's aim was to set a new world record at Tokyo Aquatics Centre and better his own mark of 1:50.73 from the world championships in 2019.

“I didn’t swim for the medal, but for the time,” he said. “I wanted to swim a personal best and a personal best for me means the world record. And that wasn’t a world record so I am a little bit disappointed.”

Milak is clearly the new dominant force in the fly having broken Michael Phelps' 10-year-old world record at the words. And at 21 years old, he'll have many more chances for more records.

As for the future of the swim shorts, Milak was asked if he'd thrown them away yet.

“I still have them,” he replied. “But it's just a matter of time.”

As Germany's Nikias Arndt chased down his opponents during the men's road time trial, his federation's sporting director Patrick Moster was shouting out words of encouragement.

Yet Moster's encouragement turned unsavory as he screamed, "Get the camel drivers" multiple times.

Arndt was attempting to make ground on Algeria's Azzedine Lagab and Eritrea's Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier.

The vision and audio were broadcast on live television, with ARD commentator Florian Nass left gobsmacked as he reacted: "If I've really understood what he was shouting, that was totally wrong."

"Words fail me," Nass added. "Something like that has no place in sport."

Moster, sporting director of the German cycling federation (BDR), has since been forced to apologize.

"In the heat of the moment and with the overall burden that we have here at the moment, my choice of words was not appropriate," he told German news agency DPA.

"I am extremely sorry and can only offer my sincere apologies. I didn't want to offend anyone."

Fierce backlash

BDR President Rudolf Scharping said the comments were "unacceptable," while German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) president Alfons Hörmann said the organization stood for "respect, fair play and tolerance."

"It is important that Patrick Moster apologized immediately after the competition. We will seek a personal conversation with him today and deal with the situation," Hörmann said.

Arndt, who finished 19th in the time trial, distanced himself from the comments via social media, saying he was "appalled" by the incident.

"Such words are not acceptable," he wrote.

"The Olympics and cycling stand for tolerance, respect and fairness. I represent these values ​​100% and take my hat off to all the great athletes who have come from all over the world here in Tokyo."

Moster, 54, was caught on camera screaming racist remarks as Germany's Nikias Arndt was chasing down two African cyclists during the event. The cycling coach later apologized for the comments, saying he was caught "in the heat of the moment."

The DOSB said that though Moster's apology was sincere, he "violated Olympic values" with the comment.

"Fair play, respect and tolerance are not negotiable for Team Germany," the DOSB said in a statement.

Lee’s parents, John Lee and Yeev Thoj, were among thousands of Hmong refugees who made the perilous journey to Thailand and then the US. Most did not find the promised land: 60% of Hmong Americans are on low incomes and more than a quarter live in poverty.

Many of them, though, packed into a community centre to watch their golden girl take an Olympic title. “The community is amazing,” Lee explained afterwards. “They were all together watching. Everybody got to see me winning a gold medal and I wish they could have been here. There were actually too many people to fit in my house, so they went to a community centre and watched it together.”

But Lee’s words were tinged with sadness, as she admitted things had not been easy for many of her friends and family. “The Hmong community are the most supportive people ever and I just feel like many don’t reach their goals,” she added. “But I want people to know that you never know what’s going to happen in the end. So don’t give up on your dreams.”

Lee certainly hasn’t, even though she has had plenty of bad breaks and horrific heartaches. In 2019, for instance, her father became paralysed from the chest down after falling off a ladder, while last year she lost her aunt and uncle to Covid-19.

Lee says now that the immense sadness she felt made her stronger, as she had to fight off negative thoughts. But her mind was clear when her father talked to her before the final with a simple message. “He just told me to do what I normally do, to go out and do my best, and in my heart I was already a winner.”

It was her father who inadvertently guided her on the path that took her to a gold medal. As a six-year-old, Lee was always jumping on her bed or having her dad “spot” her while she did backflips. Finally, her mother gave in and took her to a gymnastics club.

Even so, a year ago she had entertained thoughts of quitting, after breaking a bone in her foot during the pandemic. “It just wasn’t getting any better and felt like I wasn’t ever going to be able to make it to the Olympics,” she explained. But her injury healed just in time for her to take advantage of the biggest sliding-doors moment of these Tokyo Olympics.

Huy chương Thế Vận Hội riêng cho nữ võ sĩ tị nạn Iran

TOKYO, Nhật (NV) – Kimia Alizadeh, một vận động viên bị “gắn nhãn” với rất nhiều thứ tệ hại, nào là ma túy, “kẻ thù của đất nước,” rồi “người tị nạn,…” Cô là một vận động viên từng đoạt huy chương đồng môn Taekwondo ở Thế Vận Hội Rio 2016. Kỳ này, cô hụt mất huy chương tại Thế Vận Hội Tokyo 2020. Tuy nhiên, có một điều ngược lại đến với cô, theo báo điện tử DW của Đức.

Tên của nữ võ sĩ người Iran này, Kimia, được thêu ba màu xanh lá cây, trắng và đỏ trên thắt lưng đen, thấp thoáng dưới chiếc áo võ.

“Màu cờ” người tị nạn

Dù Kimia Alizadeh là người Iran, nhưng khi bước vào thi đấu ở Trung Tâm Makuhari, cách thủ đô Tokyo 50km, cô trở thành người không quốc tịch chiến đấu vì “màu cờ sắc áo” của Đội Thế Vận Hội Người Tị Nạn.

Tư cách đặc biệt, cũng như xuất thân của cô luôn thu hút mọi ánh mắt, dù là lúc cô tiến vào đường dẫn hay khi trận đấu bắt đầu. Nhưng với Kimia, chẳng có điều gì đáng chú ý hơn là chiến thắng.

Nhưng giống như ở Thế Vận Hội 2016 tại Rio de Janeiro, cô đã không gặp may mắn để đi tiếp vào bán kết. Lúc dó, Kimia giành được huy chương đồng, trở thành phụ nữ Iran đầu tiên đoạt huy chương Thế Vận Hội. Khoảnh khắc ý nghĩa cho cô và cho đất nước Iran.

Năm năm sau cô lại vuột mất cơ hội quay lại bục vinh quang nhận chiếc huy chương đồng. Võ sĩ đầy tham vọng Alizadeth đã thất bại, nhưng sau chặng đường đầy chông gai cô vẫn được coi như là người chiến thắng ở Thế Vận Hội 2020.

Rời bỏ quê hương vì không chịu khuất phục

Tháng Giêng, 2020, Alizadeh viết trên Instagram rằng cô không muốn sống ở Iran nữa và sẽ sang Châu Âu. Lý do được cô gái trẻ giải thích là vì không muốn trở thành một phần của “thói đạo đức giả, dối trá, bất công và xu nịnh” mà cô và “hàng triệu phụ nữ bị áp bức ở Iran” phải gánh chịu.

Alizadeh còn kể rằng “sau bức màn nhung” là những trò bóc lột trên thân xác các vận động viên Iran.

“Tôi phải mặc bất cứ thứ gì họ muốn và lặp lại tất cả những gì họ ra lệnh. Chúng tôi không là cái thá gì đối với họ, chỉ là một thứ công cụ không hơn không kém,” cô cho biết.

Sau những dòng đăng trên Instagram, Alizadeh liên tục nhận được những lời đe dọa trên mạng xã hội.

Sau một thời gian ngắn dừng chân ở Hòa Lan, cô sang Nuremberg, miền Nam nước Đức, sống cùng chồng. Đầu năm nay, võ sĩ này được chính phủ Đức cấp quy chế tị nạn và được IOC gọi vào Đội Thế Vận Hội Người Tị nạn.

Từ khi cô đào thoát khỏi Iran, Liên Đoàn Taekwando nước này từ chối thừa nhận tư cách vận động viên của cô cho đất nước khác. Bên cạnh những khó khăn như khác biệt văn hóa, vật lộn với việc học ngôn ngữ mới, thương nhớ gia đình, Alizadeh cũng đang chống chọi với những vết thương khi cô vượt biên khỏi Iran.

Cô gái trẻ này phải trải qua nhiều cuộc giải phẫu nên không thể tham gia các giải đấu quốc tế kể từ năm 2018, cho tới khi cô được gọi vào trại tập luyện với đồng đội là những người tị nạn cách nay vài tuần.

Một điều đặc biệt là hầu hết các chùa ở Hội An là do người Hoa lập nên, thờ các vị thần thánh chứ chưa thờ Phật. Đó có thể do ảnh hưởng tín ngưỡng thời nhà Minh (thờ các vị như: Thiên Hậu Thánh Mẫu, Quang Thánh Đế Quân, Thập Nhị Tiên Nương, Thái Thượng Lão Quân, Thần Phục Ba...). Minh Hương có thể hiểu là những người đồng hương xuất xứ từ nhà Minh. Những hội quán như Phúc Kiến, Triều Châu, Hải Nam, Quảng Đông, Gia Ứng được thành lập. Do đó có một hội nữa là Hội quán ngũ bang (gồm 5 bang như đã nói trên) hoạt động mang tính cách đoàn kết các bang, địa phương lại với nhau, trên tinh thần tương thân, tương trợ.

Hiện nay ở Hội Quán Phúc Kiến có một bức tranh tường rất lớn vẽ một chiếc tàu lênh đênh ngoài biển trước gió to, sóng lớn. Trên trời là Thiên Hậu Thánh Mẫu độ trì cho con tàu tai qua, nạn khỏi đến nơi bình an. Ở đây, họ vẫn còn thờ một mô hình chiếc tàu ngày xưa đã đưa những người Minh Hương đến xứ Đàng Trong. Trên tàu đầy đủ các chi tiết như chổ ở, bếp nấu ăn trông rất quy mô.

Có thể nói trong hàng ngàn năm lập quốc thì dưới thời Chúa Nguyễn Phúc Nguyên đã có một quyết sách hết sức táo bạo nhưng lại đầy thông minh là mở rộng bang giao với các nước qua việc mua bán, trao đổi hàng hóa mà thương cảng Hội An là một điển hình.

WARSAW, August 2. /TASS/. Belarusian track and field athlete Kristina Timanovskaya has been granted a Polish humanitarian visa, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz said via Twitter.

The deputy minister noted that Timanovskaya had been in contact with Polish diplomats, adding, "She has received a humanitarian Visa."

The Belarusian Olympic Committee announced on Sunday that the national athletics coaching staff decided to send Timanovskaya home over her emotional and mental state. It was initially planned that she would take part in 100m and 200m races. The coaching staff decided to nominate Timanovskaya to run in the 4x400m relay after two Belarusian runners were disqualified from participating in the event as there were not enough doping samples. Timanovskaya took to social media to criticize this decision.

Earlier, representatives of the opposition Belarusian Sport Solidarity Foundation claimed that Timanovskaya was being forcefully removed from Tokyo over her criticism of the Belarusian athletics coaches. Timanovskaya told Euroradio that she would seek asylum in Europe. Besides, she called on the International Olympic Committee to intervene in the situation and provide help. According to Timanovskaya, she was subjected to pressure and was being removed from Japan without her consent.

After Lee and Wang’s win, memes poked fun at the Chinese team’s failed challenge to a line call on the winning shot; people howled with mirthful outrage when one of the silver medallists congratulated their opponents as “our Taipei, China team” with three Chinese flag emojis.

“Chinese Taipei is a very confusing name,” Chi Cheng, a three-time Olympian, told the Guardian. “It’s quite often our athletes are [mistakenly] recognised as Chinese contestants.”

Đội banh túc cầu Nữ USA bị chèn ép quá rõ. Trong trận bán kết với Gia Nã Đại, họ tuy đàn áp nhưng không ghi được bàn nào, quả là sui sẻo. Còn sui sẻo hơn khi bị xử ép một quả phạt đền để Gia Nã Đại thắng ngược 1-0. Tôi là một trọng tài túc cầu nên có nhận xét trung thực sau, đưa lên đây để các bạn nghe chơi.

1. Trong 1 pha tranh bóng trong vùng cấm địa, 2 cầu thủ rượt theo 1 trái banh sắp đi ra ngoài. Cả hai đều không rượt kịp nên họ phải liều đưa chân tới trước...chùi. Cả hai đều không chạm banh. Thoạt đầu trọng tài cho qua luôn, không có lỗi tuy cầu thủ Canada phân bua là mình bị đá trúng chân. Thấy trọng tài chính bỏ qua, cô Canada này cũng đứng dậy để tiếp tục trận đấu.
2. VAR xem chậm lại và quyết định là... hậu vệ Mỹ có đá trúng chân tiền đạo Canada nên cho Gia Nã Đại hưởng quả phạt đền ... và kết quả đã thay đổi trận đấu và thứ hạng huy chương.

Xin quí vị khoan nóng, để tôi kể tiếp. Tôi không bênh vực ai cả và có 1 nhận xét trung thực của 1 trọng tài nhà nghề là... tất cả cho thấy trọng tài trên sân có thể bỏ qua những lỗi nhỏ này nhưng VAR thì rất nghiêm ngặt. Lỗi nhỏ xíu trong vùng cấm địa đều kèm theo quả phạt đền. Có lẽ quí vị cũng thấy qua nhiều trận đấu 1-2 năm nay. Đó là nhận xét của tôi và.... cứ tạm chấp nhận như vậy là VAR nghiêm ngặt và cả thế giới túc cầu là "từ nay sẽ như vậy". Xưa mình nói "trọng tài là cha mẹ" , giờ đây quyết định của trọng tài có thể bị đổi ngược nên "VAR là cha mẹ".

Hôm nay có trận tranh huy chuong đồng giữa Mỹ và Úc. Kết quả là Mỹ thắng 4-3, đoạt huy chương đồng. Xin chúc mừng đội Mỹ. Xem trận thì SĐ thấy:

3. Mỹ đá trên chân 1 tí, xứng đáng với kết quả.
4. Cô thủ môn Mỹ đã để lọt lưới dễ dàng hơn so với cô thủ môn chính. Cũng may là không thua.
5. Đội Úc cũng hơi sui khi 1 trái đội đầu bị đụng cột 2 lần.. nếu không thì đã hoà rồi.

Rồi... sau đây là mới là ý chính của tôi. Trong trận này, trong hiệp 2, đã 2 lần trong vùng cấm địa của Úc, hậu vệ Úc phạm lỗi. Một lần là đá trúng chân của tiền đạo Mỹ Carlie Lloyd. Một lần là banh chạm tay (giơ tay lên) khi tranh banh với hậu vệ Mỹ Crystal Dunn. Cả 2 lần khá rõ vì trọng tài SĐ thấy được liền dù mắt tôi không phải 20/20. Điều mà tôi thất vọng và thấy thương cho đội Mỹ bị chèn ép để "ráng ép cho đội Mỹ thua" là ... sau khi VAR xem lại đều bỏ qua 2 trái penalty kia.

Cũng may mà đội Mỹ còn may mắn và kết quả... chưa thay đổi. Đáng buồn cho nhóm trọng tài..vô tài kia !

“In the interest of the wellbeing of the athletes of the [National Olympic Committee] of Belarus who are still in Tokyo and as a provisional measure, the IOC cancelled and removed last night the accreditations of the two coaches,” the organisation wrote.

Notably, the two men were allegedly heard on leaked audio where they threatened and cajoled Tsimanouskaya to cease her public criticism of the national team.

“You’re like a fly in a spiderweb: the more you jerk around, the worse you get entangled,” a voice told Tsimanouskaya on the audio. At another point, one of the men told her that excessive pride “leads to cases of suicide”.

Former President Donald Trump released a statement attacking the US women's Olympic soccer team after it beat Australia to win the bronze medal on Thursday.

"If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn't woke, they would have won the Gold medal instead of the Bronze," he said. "Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has."

Trump added: "They should replace the wokesters with Patriots and start winning again."

Trump also singled out one of the team's star players, Megan Rapinoe, calling her "the woman with purple hair." He said she played "terribly," even though she scored two of the US's four goals — including a rare corner-kick goal known as an "Olímpico."

Rapinoe, who helped lead the US to its gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics, is an outspoken Trump critic who endorsed Sen. Elizabeth Warren during the 2020 Democratic primaries. Trump previously attacked Rapinoe after she refused to visit the White House while he was president.

Trump said something similar about "wokeism" during a rally in Arizona last month, during which he celebrated the US team's loss to Sweden.

"Wokeism makes you lose, ruins your mind, and ruins you as a person. You become warped. You become demented," Trump said at the time. "The US women's soccer team is a very good example of what's going on."

The crowd cheered when Trump said, "Earlier this week they unexpectedly lost to Sweden 3-0, and Americans were happy about it."

Rapinoe said the US women's soccer team "just didn't have our juice" but added that the team found its "joy" and "freedom" during the game on Thursday.

"Eventually, we'll have to do the debrief and figure out why we played five bad games and had one good game in the tournament," she said.

The International Modern Pentathlon Union said it reviewed footage showing Raisner “appearing to strike the horse ... with her fist” and that “her actions were deemed to be in violation of [the rules].” She was also heard calling to Schleu to whip the horse harder.

Parchment feared he would miss last Thursday’s 110m hurdles final when he got on the wrong coach and ended up at what he believes was one of the aquatics venues. All the official Tokyo 2020 cars were booked and taking a bus back to the Olympic village and then another to the stadium would have left him struggling to make the start of the final.

That is when he saw Tiana. “I saw this volunteer and I had to beg, ‘cause of course she is not allowed to do much, and she actually gave me some money to take one of the taxis. And that’s how I was able to get to the warm-up in time, and had enough time to compete,” Parchment said.

Parchment won bronze at the 2012 Olympics but missed the Games in 2016 due to injury. The 31-year-old only finished third in the Jamaican trials for Tokyo and did not win either his heat or semifinal on his way to the final. However, once there he beat a high-quality field in a season-best time of 13.04 seconds to take the Olympic title.

Tokyo Olympics: Uncovering the unsung heroes with data

In the Olympic Games, all eyes are on the nations that hoard metals and their famous champions. Looking at those who defied odds and even geography on their way to glory is also satisfying. DW takes a look at the data.

Despite the spotlight being constantly fixed on winners and record breakers, those that don't make the podium form the backbone of the Olympics. Nearly 12,000 athletes traveled to Tokyo in 2021 to compete for only 1,080 medals. For most of the competitors, the trip to Japan was a journey to almost certain defeat.

Instead of writing one more story about the medal hoarders and their tales of triumph, DW decided to look at the (mostly) unsung heroes of Tokyo: the countries and athletes who won just a little and even those who lost a lot. Here are four reasons why they're worth attention.

1. The 'losers' are catching up

While 113 of the 216 national teams that competed in Tokyo went home empty-handed, the top 10 medal-winners hoarded more than half of the honors. The raw numbers sound disheartening, especially if you root for the underdogs. However, there's some reason for optimism.

The Tokyo Olympics continued a recent trend: with each edition of the games, a higher share of the medals have been awarded to nations who have not previously been prominent in the medal table. Ten countries won 55% of all medals in Tokyo. This might seem like a lot, but it's way down from the 70% those top dogs used to get during the latter half of the Cold War, when the United States and the Soviet Union fought tooth and nail for dominance in the sporting world.

Even more striking is the rise of nations that finished 40th or lower in the medal rankings. In Tokyo, they won a record-breaking 13% of all medals – way up from the single-digit percentages they used to win two decades ago. Pay attention powerhouses: this means that nations that couldn't even dream of Olympic laurels are getting a significant share of victories too.

And there's more: depending on your perspective, countries like Fiji, Georgia and even the 60,000-inhabitant Bermuda are doing better than many Olympic giants.

2. It's all about taking your chances

Whose national athletes won more medals in Tokyo, Japan's or Bermuda's? Wait for it!

While Japan won more medals in this Olympics than the country has in any other – 58 in total – and Bermuda won just one, there's a solid argument to put the small Caribbean archipelago at the top.

Japanese competitors are among the ones who lost the most at the Tokyo games. On their way to get those 58 medals, they blew almost 350 other opportunities, meaning Japanese athletes failed to medal in 85% of their appearances.

Bermuda, on the other hand, only had two shots at glory. Nevertheless, it won gold with triathlete Flora Duffy. Her success gave the tiny nation the best appearance to gold medal ratio in Tokyo, with 50%.

When it comes to the victory ratios, Japan is no exception. The Russian athletes lost 80% of their competitions. France and Germany were defeated almost 90% of the time. Winning a lot, in the end, might just be a byproduct of losing a lot.

On the other side of that coin, athletes from less-successful nations often win more, proportionally, than their counterparts from powerhouse countries, just like Bermuda did. If we were to rank the Olympic nations for their victory ratios and not for the total medals that they amass, some unusual contestants would rise to the top.

San Marino, the 2nd place at this reimagined medal table, however, is also worth taking a closer look at. The oldest republic in the world, a micronation enclaved in Italy, is not only an example of making the most of limited chances. It is also a symbol of persistence.

3. Endurance will be rewarded

Sometimes the way to glory is more energy-sapping than running a marathon. And there are (still) a few countries that have been competing for decades without any sign of luck, from micronations such as Monaco and Liechtenstein to populous giants like Congo and Myanmar. But the wait sometimes pays off, just ask Alessandra Perilli.

The athlete from San Marino fought a long time for her bronze medal. In London 2012, she was one shot away from winning a podium finish in the trap shooting competition but ended in fourth. Four years later, another failure – this time finishing in 16th at Rio de Janeiro.

It was only in 2021 that she finally got her victory. Those nine years of hard work, however, pale in comparison to how long her country was exercising patience for such a success.

The small country of 30,000 inhabitants has competed in every Olympic Games since 1968 without winning a single medal. San Marino's big hour finally came in Tokyo: its athletes did not only win one but three medals.

Two more countries won medals for the first time in 2021: Turkmenistan, which has been competing since 1996, and Burkina Faso, biding their time since 1972.

But there are other countries that have yet to be rewarded for their work: despite participating in the Olympic summer games for several decades, they haven't won a single medal so far.

In the end, a country doesn't need to become a sporting giant to win medals. Sometimes, the only thing that is needed is one exceptional person. Grenada can attest to that.

4. A single spark of talent can be enough

Approximately 100,000 people live in Grenada, an island country just off the coast of Venezuela. Judging by their population, the odds of one of the most dominant 400m sprinters of our time being born there weren't too great.

Defying statistics, however, Kirani James was born in city of Gouyave, home to a people more famous for their fishing skills than athletic prowess.

In Tokyo, he won his third consecutive Olympic medal: a bronze, which added to a collection that already boasted a silver and a gold. To this day, he is the only Grenadian to achieve victories at the Olympic Games.

He is one of 22 athletes that are still the lone Olympic medalists from their countries. Apart from Kirani, the biggest winners on this list are Surinamese swimmer Anthony Nesty, Afghan taekwondo fighter Rohullah Nikpai and Mozambican 800m runner Maria Mutola, all of them with two medals each.

No matter how amazing they are, though, one thing is still undeniable: the world's biggest sporting stage is still far from even. Some countries can afford to spend millions on their Olympic programs, preparing generation after generation of well-trained athletes. Others must rely solely on sparks of genius and endurance to win.

Despite this, it's the contenders and the unexpected heroes that give the Olympic Games most of its charm, even when they fall short of their goals. After all, as they must have heard over and over in the last three weeks, it's the taking part that counts.
