Djokovic’s lawyers succeeded in a bid to stop him from being deported on Thursday with a full hearing in the federal circuit court now scheduled for Monday.

After unsuccessfully pleading his case at the airport, Djokovic was transported to an immigration hotel in the inner Melbourne suburb of Carlton. As the political and diplomatic ramifications unfurled, Djokovic’s lawyers were working to obtain an interim injunction to stop his deportation.

In a snap hearing before judge Anthony Kelly on Thursday evening, it was agreed a full hearing between the player and the home affairs minister would be heard on Monday. Djokovic cannot be deported before that hearing. The parties are due to submit evidence and submissions over the weekend.

The legal challenge could go all the way to the high court but there are just 11 days before Djokovic is due to start his campaign for a record 21st grand slam title at Melbourne Park.

The player’s family, who on Thursday compared him to Jesus and accused Australian authorities of “trying to crucify him”, called for a mass protest against his continuing detention on Friday, when Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that the Serbian public “has a strong impression that Djokovic is a victim of a political game against his will, and that he was lured to travel to Australia in order to be humiliated”.

Đài truyền hình CNN ngày 7 Tháng Giêng trích thông cáo của Bộ Ngoại Giao Czech cho biết: “Chúng tôi xác nhận vận động viên quần vợt người Czech Renata Voracova đã bị tạm giam, tương tự như Djokovic cùng với nhiều tay vợt khác, tại Melborne. Tổng lãnh sự của chúng tôi tại Sydney đang giải quyết sự việc và đã liên lạc với công dân của mình.”

Voracova rút lui khỏi giải

Theo tờ The Age của Úc, Voracova nhập cảnh Úc với chứng nhận miễn trừ y tế dựa vào bằng chứng đã bị nhiễm COVID-19 cách đây sáu tháng.

Tay vợt nữ 38 tuổi này đã thi đấu vòng “đọ sức” (warm-up) tại Melbourne và thua ở vòng thứ nhất ở hạng đôi nữ của giải Melbourne Summer Set.

Trả lời CNN hôm Thứ Sáu, ABF không nêu tên Voracova mà chỉ khẳng định đã kết thúc cuộc điều tra về tình trạng visa nhập cảnh của một cá nhân tham gia giải Australian Open này.
“Người này bị tạm giam chờ làm thủ tục trục xuất ra khỏi Úc. Tất cả du khách nhập cảnh đều phải tuân thủ luật pháp và quy định nghiêm khắc của chúng tôi bất chấp họ là ai, nhập cảnh với lý do gì,” ABF khẳng định.

Trong khi đó, theo Bộ Ngoại Giao Czech, với những thông tin họ có được, Voracova có bằng chứng miễn trừ hợp lệ để có thể vào Úc tham gia giải Australian Open. Cơ quan này phản đối cách xứ lý của chính quyền Úc và yêu cầu đưa ra lời giải thích.

Ngoài ra, Bộ Ngoại Giao Czech cũng khẳng định, Voracova đã quyết định rút lui khỏi giải đấu và sẽ về nước.

Theo ABF, một vận động viên khác không được nêu danh tính cũng đã chấp nhận rời Úc khi được yêu cầu.

Lá thư bị rò rỉ

Hôm Thứ Sáu, tờ Herald Sun của Úc trích đăng một bức thư được cho là của nhà tổ chức giải Australian Open gửi cho các vận động viên ngày 7 Tháng Mười Hai với nội dung hướng dẫn sai về chích ngừa.

CNN không thể xác minh tính xác thực của lá thư này.

Lá thư hướng dẫn rằng các trường hợp được xác định miễn trừ y tế à người đã nhiễm COVID-19 trong vòng sáu tháng có giấy xác nhận của bác sĩ hoặc cơ quan y tế. Các vận động viên được khuyên nên nộp giấy tờ chứng minh trước ngày 10 Tháng Mười Hai.

Hướng dẫn này hoàn toàn khác với nội dung lá thư được đăng tải rộng rãi trên báo chí của ông Greg Hunt, bộ trưởng y tế, gửi ông Craig Tiley, trưởng ban tổ chức giải, rằng trường hợp bị nhiễm COVID-19 trong vòng sáu tháng qua không được miễn cách ly khi nhập cảnh.

Thủ Tướng Scott Morrison đã tái khẳng định vấn đề này với phóng viên hôm Thứ Năm, 6 Tháng Giêng.

Tennis great Martina Navratilova on Monday condemned the stance as “pathetic” and accused Tennis Australia of “capitulating” to China.

Australia’s defence minister Peter Dutton joined the chorus on Tuesday, saying Peng’s safety “is not a political issue”. “It’s a human rights issue,” Dutton told Sky News. “And it’s frankly about the treatment of a young woman who is claiming that she has been sexually assaulted.”

But TA chief executive and tournament director, Craig Tiley, on Tuesday announced the ban for shirts would be reversed as long as those wearing them were well behaved. Banners would still be barred due to safety concerns.
