Police shootings: Officers' names must be made public, court rules
The names of officers involved in shootings are public information subject to disclosure by law, a California appellate court ruled Tuesday, marking the latest legal opinion in a public records court battle that has embroiled law enforcement and the media. The 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected arguments from the city of Long Beach and its police union that officers' names were protected as investigative and personnel records and because of officers' privacy rights.

California Gov. Jerry Brown denies parole for 71 murderers
California Gov. Jerry Brown pardoned 21 people in his first year in office and rejected parole for 71 first- and second-degree murderers who had been recommended for release by the parole board. Brown did allow for the early release of just one person, Tung Nguyen of Garden Grove, who was convicted of first-degree murder for his role in a motel-room killing in a dispute over money.

FBI warns of threat from anti-government extremists
Anti-government extremists opposed to taxes and regulations pose a growing threat to local law enforcement officers in the United States, the FBI warned on Monday. These extremists, sometimes known as "sovereign citizens," believe they can live outside any type of government authority, FBI agents said at a news conference.

Death row inmates challenge U.S. FDA on allowing imports of execution drug
Twenty-one death row inmates asked a U.S. judge to order the Food and Drug Administration to block importation and use of a drug administered in executions, saying the anesthesia for lethal injections hasn't been properly vetted by the agency. Lawyers for the inmates argued today in federal court in Washington that the FDA has violated the law by allowing state departments of corrections to import sodium thiopental, a drug used as a first-stage painkiller in the process of executing an inmate with a lethal injection.

Madonna stalker escapes mental hospital, LAPD says
Police today were searching for the man who allegedly stalked Madonna after he escaped from a Los Angeles-area mental hospital, officials said. Robert Dewey Hoskins, 54, "is a very psychotic man when not taking his medication and has very violent tendencies," the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement. Hoskins allegedly left the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk last week.
