He was inside a large barrel-type device which appeared to have flotation buoys attached to each end. The Flagler county sheriff’s office posted photos of the strange vessel on Facebook.
Fox 35 Orlando reported that Baluchi’s aim was to “run” to the northern US or Bermuda. Baluchi instead ended up 30 miles south of his St Augustine start point.
“My goal is to not only raise money for homeless people, raise money for the coast guard, raise money for the police department, raise money for the fire department,” he told the TV channel. “They are in public service, they do it for safety and they help other people.”

French police have arrested two suspects after a thief took jewels worth between €2m and €3m (£1.7m and £2.55m) from an exclusive Paris store and scooted off before the alarm could be raised.
The two suspects, who were travelling on a coach, were arrested in a motorway lay-by in Moselle in eastern France on Wednesday morning. Officers said a “substantial part” of the jewels stolen in the heist had been recovered.
The man made his getaway on an electric scooter after reportedly threatening staff at the Chaumet jewellers near the Champs-Élysées.
CCTV shows the grey-haired alleged thief, wearing a light-grey suit, white shirt and tie, arriving at the store about 5.10pm on Tuesday. Shortly afterwards he was filmed leaving the shop with a white bag of jewels and gemstones and departing on a green scooter that he had left parked outside.
Staff told police the lone man had at first pretended to be a customer asking to see various pieces of expensive jewellery before drawing a knife. No one was injured in the robbery.
After the heist, potential witnesses at a nearby cafe told Le Parisien they saw and heard nothing. Many were reportedly distracted by the presence of one-time screen hard man and martial arts specialist Jean-Claude Van Damme at the nearby opticians.

The contest, which this year celebrated 40 years, is held at Hemingway’s favourite Key West watering hole, Sloppy Joe’s, and is fuelled by the myth of the man as much as by the growing myth of the contest.
The very first lookalike contest was held in 1981 and organised by the then-manager of Sloppy Joe’s, Michael Walton. He dreamed it up as a way to attract tourists to Key West in the sweltering summer off-season. There were 36 contestants, and Hemingway’s brother Leicester was a judge.
These days, a rather official Hemingway Look-Alike Society exists; their article 1 bylaw states, “Have fun.” At the heart of the Society are the Papas, the previous lookalike winners, who form a brotherhood of white-haired men. Together, they raise money for the Hemingway lookalike scholarship which has given away hundreds of thousands of dollars, mostly to students attending the College of the Florida Keys.
