Victoria's secret blood sports come under the spotlight as a cockfighting raid discovers more than 200 fighting birds and the RSPCA investigates the murky yet lucrative world of dogfighting. Lorna Edwards reports.
THE discovery of a large cockfighting operation north of Melbourne has authorities concerned about the "widespread" popularity of blood sports in Victoria's underground criminal networks.
The RSPCA was called in after 222 game birds and a range of cockfighting paraphernalia were found at a training and breeding facility on a property at Coimadai, near Bacchus Marsh, during a drug raid by the Australian Crime Commission last Sunday.
It was the 38th reported incident of cockfighting the RSPCA has received in Victoria alone in the past year, raising concerns about brutal "fight clubs" where animals bred for aggression battle to the death for entertainment and gambling purposes.
The RSPCA says blood sports, involving mostly American pit bull terriers and game birds, has become a widespread problem in the state.
The fact that there were just three reports of dogfighting in the past year reflected the veil of secrecy and sophisticated security around the events arranged by organised crime syndicates rather than the true extent of the activity, investigators believe.
The RSPCA's chief inspector, Greg Boland, said cockfighting often occurred alongside drug trafficking in parts of the Asian community, particularly Vietnamese, and most discoveries were made incidentally as a result of police drug raids on properties.
