Trevor Noah
https://www.theguardian.com/culture/...el-seth-meyers
On the Daily Show, Trevor Noah looked into dissatisfaction with Sunak as prime minister – not because of Sunak’s policies or immense personal wealth, but his skin color.
As one caller to a British radio show put it: “Could you imagine me becoming the prime minister of Pakistan? Or Saudi Arabia? No! These things matter … Eighty-five per cent of English people are, yes, white English people. And they want to see a prime minister who reflects them.”
“This guy has a good point – could you imagine if white English people wanted to rule countries where no one looked like them?” Noah deadpanned. “That would never happen! Can you imagine that world?
Noah did feel a little bad for England’s racists – “they voted for Brexit specifically to keep Britain white, and that vote started a seven-year chain of dominoes that has now led directly to an Indian prime minister.”

Mussolini supporters march in Italy
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...huts-down-rave
Fascist sympathisers from across Italy performed the stiff-armed salute while expressing support for Meloni – whose party, Brothers of Italy, has neofascist roots – as they gathered in Predappio, the Emilia Romagna town where Mussolini was born and is buried, to mark the 100th anniversary of his march on Rome, the event that initiated Italy’s fascist era.
Events in the town organised by Mussolini’s descendants and the neofascist group Arditi d’Italia got under way on Friday, the anniversary of when Mussolini and his armed forces began their march from Milan to Rome before seizing power two days later, and ended on Sunday with a march to the Mussolini family crypt in the San Cassiano cemetery.
Displays of fascist sympathy are banned under Italian law, which also forbids the reconstitution of fascist parties.

French MP banned after racist outburst in parliament
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nch-parliament
Grégoire de Fournas, a member of the far-right Rassemblement National (RN), or National Rally, will also lose half his salary for two months. He said he was not referring to the MP, but to migrants.
The house erupted with outrage after his interjection on Thursday evening. The speaker, Yaël Braun-Pivet, halted proceedings immediately and demanded to know who had made the comment, which came as Carlos Martens Bilongo, of the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI), was questioning the government.
Bilongo, a teacher, was addressing a request by SOS Mediterranée, a humanitarian organisation, for help in finding a port willing to accept 234 migrants rescued at sea in recent days. He said he was “deeply hurt and disappointed” by De Fournas’s remark but was heartened by the many messages of support he had received.

Putin orders one-time $3,200 payment for mobilised and contract soldiers

Nov 3 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered a one-time payment of 195,000 roubles ($3,200) for contract soldiers and those who have been mobilised to fight in Ukraine, the Kremlin said.
Last week Moscow said the "partial mobilisation" of 300,000 reservists was over but conceded there had been problems. Over 2,000 people were arrested at protests amid public outcry over cases of men being called up despite medical exemptions, or a lack of military experience.
In a decree published on the Kremlin website, Putin said the payment was designed "to provide additional measures of social support" to contract soldiers and those who had been called up. It did not give further details.
The minimum monthly wage on offer for contract soldiers is 160,000 roubles ($2,700), which is almost three times the national average.

Russian conscripts say hundreds killed in attack
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...lled-in-attack
“A Ukrainian drone first flew over us, and after that their artillery started to pound us for hours and hours, nonstop,” Agafonov, who survived the shelling, told the Guardian in a phone interview on Monday.
“I saw men being ripped apart in front of me, most of our unit is gone, destroyed. It was hell,” he said, adding that his unit’s commanders abandoned them just before the shelling started.
According to Agafonov’s estimates, only 130 draftees out of the 570 survived the Ukrainian attack, which would make it the deadliest known incident involving conscripts since the start of the mobilisation drive at the end of September.
“And many who survived are losing their minds after what happened. No one wants to go back,” Agafonov said.

Kherson war crimes
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ussian-retreat
After two nights of jubilation following the liberation of their city, the people of Kherson on Sunday began to assess the extent of the damage wreaked by eight long months of Russian occupation, with residents still without electricity and water.
On Sunday, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused Russian soldiers of war crimes and killing civilians in Kherson. “Investigators have already documented more than 400 Russian war crimes. Bodies of dead civilians and servicemen have been found. The Russian army left behind the same savagery it did in other regions of the country it entered,” he said.
He also said Russian forces had destroyed key infrastructure before retreating, while the mayor of Kherson said the humanitarian situation was “severe” because of a lack of medicine and bread.

Immensa lab errors may have led to 23 Covid-19 deaths
10 hours ago
Testing at the Immensa Health Clinic, in Wolverhampton, was suspended after the errors were discovered
Staff mistakes in a private laboratory may have caused 23 extra deaths from Covid-19.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) made the claim in a report into errors at the Immensa lab in Wolverhampton.
It said as many as 39,000 positive results were wrongly reported as negative in September and October 2021.
The mistakes led to "increased numbers of [hospital] admissions and deaths", the report, published on Tuesday, concluded.
Thousands of people, many in the South West, were wrongly told to stop testing after their results were processed by Immensa.
The Wolverhampton laboratory was used for additional testing capacity for NHS Test and Trace from early September 2021, but testing was suspended on 12 October following reports of inaccurate results.
Experts said high case rates in some areas were down to people unwittingly infecting others when they should have been isolating.
UKHSA experts said the mistakes could have led to as many as 55,000 additional infections in areas where the false negatives were reported.
"Each incorrect negative test likely led to just over two additional infections," the report said.
"In those same geographical areas, our results also suggest an increased number of admissions and deaths."
Immensa was paid more than £100m to carry out Covid testing for the NHS during the pandemic.
The UKHSA said a total of about 400,000 samples had been processed at the lab in Wolverhampton.
'Staff errors' to blame
"The cause [of the mistakes] was the incorrect setting of the threshold levels for reporting positive and negative results of PCR samples for Covid-19," said the UKHSA.
"Based on background infection rates in different population groups at the time, UKHSA estimated that this error could have led to around 39,000 results being incorrectly reported as negative when they should have been positive."
Richard Gleave, UKHSA director and lead investigator, said: "We have concluded that staff errors within Immensa's Wolverhampton laboratory were the immediate cause of the incorrect reporting of Covid-19 PCR test results in September and October 2021.
"It is our view that there was no single action that NHS Test and Trace could have taken differently to prevent this error arising in the private laboratory."
Jenny Harries, UKHSA chief executive, said: "I fully accept the findings and recommendations made in this report, many of which were implemented as soon as UKHSA discovered the incident.
"These ongoing improvements will enhance our ability to spot problems sooner where they do arise."
When asked whether the UKHSA would be taking legal action against Dante Labs, the owners of Immensa, Dr Harries said: "The contract ceased anyway shortly afterwards and it clearly hasn't been renewed, there is a legal case proceeding and you'll understand I can't comment on that in detail, but it is fair to say we are pursuing or rights under the contract."

Former lady-in-waiting to queen issues apology
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...ed-questioning
The late queen’s lady-in-waiting has resigned and apologised after a black guest at a reception hosted by the queen consort was left feeling traumatised and violated after she questioned her repeatedly about where she “really came from”.
A spokesperson for the Prince of Wales, who is Lady Hussey’s godson, said the comments were unacceptable and that “racism has no place in our society”.
Ngozi Fulani, the founder of the charity Sistah Space, claimed Susan Hussey moved her hair to reveal her name badge and persistently questioned her over where her “people” came from, despite having been told she was a British national.
