Bệnh từ miệng mà vào, hoạ từ miệng mà vô:
suspected methanol poisoning in Laos
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...poisoning-laos
British tourists are among those being treated in hospital after allegedly being served alcoholic drinks containing deadly methanol.
An Australian teenager, an American, and two Danish tourists aged 19 and 20 have also died after the incident in Vang Vieng, a town particularly popular among backpackers in search of partying and adventure sports.
Unlike ethanol, the key component of alcoholic drinks, methanol is toxic to humans. The incident has highlighted the dangers of methanol poisoning across south-east Asia, where it is a cultural norm to brew bootleg liquor from ingredients such as rice and sugarcane sometimes mixed with methanol as a cheaper alternative to ethanol.
Asia has the highest prevalence of methanol poisoning globally, with incidents in Indonesia, India, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines, according to MSF data.

Palestinian artists plan Gaza Biennale
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...e-and-survival
About 50 artists from Gaza will exhibit their work within the besieged coastal strip, and are looking for art galleries to host exhibitions overseas. But in order to hold their work to the eyes of the rest of the world, the artists are facing a unique challenge: how to get their art across Israeli siege lines.
About a quarter of the exhibiting artists managed to cross into Egypt earlier in the war. Of those left behind, some will try to send artworks out of Gaza with aid workers who are sporadically allowed to cross the lines; others will send material electronically in the form of pictures and video, while a few will partner with artists in the West Bank to reconstitute their art remotely.
The name is also a statement of intent that the biennale will be a recurring event and that Gaza and artists will still be standing in two years’ time.
“Through art, we send a message to the world that we are still alive, and as long as we are still breathing we can shine a light on everything that is happening here,” Hajj said.

Eight Laos hostel staff held over suspected methanol poisoning deaths
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...anol-poisoning
The Laos Post reported on Tuesday that police had detained the 34-year-old manager of the Nana backpackers hostel and seven other employees for questioning. All those detained were Vietnamese nationals, according to local media.
Methanol, which is tasteless and odourless, is sometimes added to liquor by unscrupulous producers and can also be present in homemade spirit that has not been brewed correctly. It can quickly lead to serious illness.

Political chaos in South Korea
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-yoon-suk-yeol
South Korea’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, on Tuesday declared martial law, blasting the opposition as “anti-state forces” threatening the country’s democracy.
In a dramatic, late-night emergency television address to the nation, Yoon announced that he was imposing martial law in South Korea, as he accused the opposition of paralysing the government with “anti-state activities”.
A six-point decree from the new martial law commander, the army chief Gen Park An-su, swiftly followed: banning political activities and parties, “false propaganda”, strikes and “gatherings that incite social unrest”.
Six hours later he backed down, lifting the order in the face of united opposition.
