Iranian woman dies ‘after being beaten’ over hijab law
    https://www.theguardian.com/global-d...over-hijab-law

Mahsa Amini was travelling with her family from Iran’s western province of Kurdistan to the capital, Tehran, to visit relatives when she was reportedly arrested for failing to meet the country’s strict rules on women’s dress.

Witnesses reported that Amini was beaten in the police van, an allegation the police deny.

Amini’s family were notified that she had been taken to hospital hours after her arrest. She was transferred to an intensive-care unit at Kasra hospital.

According to Hrana, an Iranian human rights organisation, Amini’s family were told during her arrest that she would be released after a “re-education session”.

Women have been arrested across the country after the national “hijab and chastity day” declared on 12 July. One of the women was Sepideh Rashno, a writer and artist who was reportedly beaten and tortured in custody before making a forced apology on television.

Swiftly debunked rumours of coups swirl
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...party-congress

Last week, a Chinese court jailed the former vice-minister of public security Sun Lijun, the former justice minister Fu Zhenghua, and former police chiefs of Shanghai, Chongqing and Shanxi on corruption charges. Fu and the police chiefs had been accused of being part of a political clique surrounding Sun, and being disloyal to Xi.

There was no specific mention of the coup rumours on China’s social media, but a Weibo hashtag related to “airports across the country cancel flights” was viewed by more than 200,000 people over the weekend.

Drew Thompson, a scholar with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, said a coup in China wasn’t entirely implausible, and Xi had reportedly shown concern about the prospect in the past, but the weekend’s rumours looked more like “wishful thinking”. They appeared to originate in accounts associated with the Falun Gong movement, which Thompson said was “essentially not credible”.

    digital twin of Tuvalu
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...apsing-climate

Global heating is threatening to submerge Tuvalu by the end of the century, and its 12,000 inhabitants are considering the future.

Dr Eselealofa Apinelu, Tuvalu’s former attorney general and current high commissioner to Fiji, told the State of the Pacific conference on Thursday that Tuvaluans needed “something they can hold on to”.

Tuvalu’s culture and values could be enshrined in a “digital twin”, housed somewhere like the metaverse.

Apinelu said “it needs to be stored somewhere that there was a country called Tuvalu”.

Tuvalu’s foreign minister, Simon Kofe, said last year that his country was looking at legal ways to remain a state even if it disappears.
Apinelu said Tuvaluans were worried about the future, and about future generations, who would have to find somewhere to live

North Korea fires missile over Japan
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nts-to-shelter

Japan’s Kyodo news agency said the government issued the alert on Tuesday morning to residents in the northernmost main island of Hokkaido and the country’s north-eastern Aomori prefecture shortly before 8am.

Tuesday’s test also comes a few days after the US vice-president, Kamala Harris, made a high-profile visit to the heavily armed border separating the two Koreas.

In September 2017, millions of residents in a dozen Japanese prefectures were warned to take cover inside buildings or underground in chilling reminders that Japan is within easy striking distance of North Korean missiles.

    Cambodia’s cybercrime crisis
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ercrime-crisis

When the advert popped up on Ly Thi Lan’s* Facebook feed, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. An employer in Cambodia was looking for new staff, the only requirement was computer skills, and the salary was generous, especially compared with her factory job in her home country, Vietnam. She would be able to save money, and pay for health treatment she needed. Her husband decided to go as well.

“I just wanted to go there to have a better job, earn money to pay for a better life,” she says.

But when she arrived, she found it wasn’t a typical admin job. Her role was to scour the internet for victims she could trick into investing in an online scam. If she refused to do the work, she was told that she would be taken to the eighth floor of the building compound, beaten or electrocuted, she says.

Lan was later told by other workers she had been sold to a criminal gang, and that they were now owned by their company. She had no idea how or when this happened, only that she couldn’t return home without paying a huge ransom.

    protester attacked at Chinese consulate
    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...-in-manchester

The alleged victim, known as Bob, said he had hair pulled from his scalp during the attack. Police said he spent the night in hospital. A photograph published by VOA Cantonese showed some of his injuries, just below his eyes, which left him bleeding and bruised.

Greater Manchester police confirmed its officers had witnessed an assault out of the consulate building in the Rusholme area and had then intervened.

“Shortly before 4pm a small group of men came out of the building and a man was dragged into the consulate grounds and assaulted,” GMP said. “Due to our fears for the safety of the man, officers intervened and removed the victim from the consulate grounds.”

Images from the attack circulating on social media show a grey-haired man in a blue scarf holding Bob by his hair just inside the consulate gates, as other men attack him and a British police officer tries to pull him away.

Indonesia bans sale of syrup medicines after at least 99 children die
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...9-children-die

The move comes just weeks after the World Health Organization issued an alert over four Indian-made cough syrups that it said were potentially linked with acute kidney injuries and the deaths of 70 children in the Gambia.

Indonesia has said it is investigating 206 cases of acute kidney injury (AKI), mostly in children under the age of five, and 99 deaths, although it has said the real number of cases could be higher.

In the WHO’s laboratory analysis of the contaminated products under investigation in the Gambia, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol were found in “unacceptable amounts” in the samples.

secret Chinese police stations in Canada
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-investigation

The Royal Canada Mounted Police said it was investigating “reports of criminal activity in relation to the so-called ‘police’ stations” but did not specify the location of the sites.

The police also warned that “foreign states may seek to intimidate or harm communities or individuals within Canada”.
The revelations come days after the Dutch government said it was investigating two suspected stations.

The stations were first identified by Safeguard Defenders, a Spanish civil rights group which alleged the Fuzhou and Qingtian police agencies had between them opened 54 “overseas service centres” in 25 cities across 21 countries, including Canada.

Family values: con hay là nợ?

Young girls being sold in India to repay loans
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...s-human-rights

The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the state government demanding a police inquiry and answers within a month to what it called an “abominable” practice.

People living in many rural areas in India often have to borrow money from fellow villagers when a family member falls seriously ill and needs medical treatment.

Local media reports say that in half a dozen districts around Bhilwara, if a family cannot repay a loan, the aggrieved creditor has complained to the “caste panchayats” or caste councils.

By way of “settlement”, the councils have ordered the family to hand over their daughter – sometimes more than one depending on the size of the loan – so that the creditor can sell her to a trafficker to recoup his money.
