Arsenal Evict Women’s Team From Emirates Stadium For Crucial UWCL Tie
Arsenal are still unable to confirm a venue for their pivotal UEFA Women's Champions League tie against Bayern next month after a stadium clash with their men's team.
It is likely the women's match will have to be shifted to the Meadow Park Stadium in Borehamwood after UEFA ruled out a change in date and time for the game as the two matches in the final round of the Champions League group stage must be played simultaneously to ensure no team plays knowing the exact result they need to progress to the knockout stages.
It also seems that it will be impossible for Arsenal to move the match to another netutal stadium, such as Wembley, as Article 25.02 of the competition regulations state that "each club must propose one or a maximum of two stadiums for its home matches as from the group stage". These stadiums must be nominated "before the start of the competition".
In May, on the back of phenomenal league attendances at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal announced they would this season be staging eleven games at the club's 60,704-capacity stadium. At the time, Arsenal CEO Vinai Venkatesham said "we’re looking forward to giving more supporters the chance to watch our women’s team play. This is part of a collective drive across the club to take the women's game forward and support sustainable growth of the game so it can thrive in the long term."
Three of those eleven were projected to be their home matches in the group stage of the UEFA Women's Champions League, which they subsequently qualified for. The last of those games was scheduled to be the highest-profile - and likely to attract the largest attendance - against German champions FC Bayern on December 18.
Yet that date, potentially clashed with the quarter-finals of the men's League Cup should Arsenal have progressed in that competition. Sure enough, they did and were drawn to play at home against Crystal Palace last week.
The fact that North London neighbors Tottenham Hotspur were also drawn to play at home meant the Metropolitan Police requested the two games be held on different days and Arsenal were left with no choice but to play on the 18th, directly clashing with their women's team.
The club yesterday confirmed their predicament, prioritising the men's team who will play at the Emirates Stadium and forcing the women's team to make alternate arrangements. "We are liaising with UEFA, and further details regarding our UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich will be announced in due course."
In a statement released today FC Bayern said they are "in contact with UEFA and Arsenal and the aim is to inform FC Bayern away fans of the changes as soon as possible." I understand that the German club were not contacted by Arsenal over the need to change the venue of the match and informed of the stadium clash by UEFA today.
It now appears this potential stadium clash was foreseeable, if not inevitable. Dates and kick-off times for UEFA competition matches were communicated in May but games on each matchday could be played on one of two nights. Similarly the dates for the rounds of the EFL Cup were known in advance but also make allowance to be staged on one of a number of midweek nights.
Arsenal have been victims of their own success on the men's and women's side and unfortunate that the presence of London rivals Spurs in the EFL Cup and Chelsea Women in the Champions League have corralled their men's and women's teams to play on the same night.
There is little leeway for manoeuvre for the women's side to move their fixture. Article 23.96 of the Regulations of the UEFA Women's Champions League stipulates that "the fixtures from the group stage onwards are established by the UEFA administration, who decides which matches are to be played on which days on the basis of the relevant draw. Matches within the same group are played on the same day." However it ends by stating that "exceptions to this rule can be made by the UEFA administration."
Arsenal have not played a UEFA Women's Champions League group stage match at Borehamwood since a 3-0 win over HB Køge of Denmark in November 2021. That match played in front of just 819 spectators in a non-league men's ground with an only limited seating capacity. That season UEFA gave Arsenal special dispensation to play their group stage matches at Borehamwood and the issue with the stadium that existed then is still a problem for the club now.
That match in front of a three-figure crowd now seems a world away for the club who have regularly sold out their Emirates Stadium, beginning with an attendance of 60,063 for the UEFA Women's Champions League semi-final against VfL Wolfsburg in May 2023.
Their first group stage match of this season against Vålerenga drew a meagre crowd of 5,613 to the Emirates Stadium, only just above the 4,500-capacity of the Meadow Park Stadium in Borehamwood. However the visit of the all-star FC Bayern team from Munich, who thrashed Arsenal 5-2 in their opening group stage match this season is sure to have attracted many more fans.
Tickets for the game have been available on the Arsenal website since September. I understand around 7,500 tickets for the game had been sold for the game before they were taken off sale yesterday. How those people will now be accommodated in a smaller stadium away from the center of London will be a huge logistical problem for the club, which belies Venkatesham's words in May and the "one club" philosophy espoused then by their departing Sporting Director Edu Gaspar.

Lionel Messi’s playoff defeat a problem for MLS
https://www.theguardian.com/football...-united-soccer
These were the Messi playoffs. The league’s entire postseason marketing focused on the GOAT, pre-empting a predicted march to MLS Cup glory after Miami had set a regular-season points record. Messi was everywhere: on billboards, in social media promos and TV ads. They even aired Inter Miami’s first playoff game in Times Square. MLS had been building to this moment ever since Messi arrived in Florida.
Those best-laid plans, however, didn’t account for Atlanta United causing the biggest upset in league history. The 34-point regular season difference between Inter Miami (74) and The Five Stripes (40) was the largest between two teams to ever face each other in the playoffs.
Messi’s absence for the rest of the playoffs will undeniably hurt MLS. Apple continues to keep the exact viewing figures for matches on MLS Season Pass to itself, but the Argentinian’s debut for Inter Miami last year drew in more than 100,000 new subscribers – the largest single-day rise for the streaming service since its launch at the start of the 2023 season.
By the end of last season, MLS Season Pass surpassed two million subscribers, a landmark directly attributed to the Messi boom.
This is a preview of the problem MLS could face when Messi leaves, which could be at the end of next season when his contract expires. The estimated $50m-$60m investment in the former Barcelona star will only pay off if the league uses it as a catalyst to build something more permanent. The Messi era in MLS will be a failure if new supporters scatter now that Inter Miami are out of the playoffs.
Sảy Messi, đi một tỷ.

statue of Harry Kane unveiled

The statue was commissioned in 2019 at a cost of £7,200 but the local council didn’t know where to put it.
The Sun has labelled the statue “fugly” while the Onefootball website asked: “Is this the worst footballer statue of all time?”
