muddy spud turns out to be grenade
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...de-new-zealand

Grenades frequently pop up in potato fields in Europe, but are a highly unusual find in New Zealand.

The weapon had been sent to Auckland’s East Tamaki Mr Chips factory on Tuesday, after being dug up from a potato farm in Matamata, in the Waikato region.

Night shift worker Richard Teurukura told news website Stuff, he pulled the device from a “potato reception area”, where 100,000 potatoes had been delivered at 3.30am on Tuesday. Initially, he thought the object was a muddy stone but on further inspection, was surprised to discover it was a grenade.

Australian travellers left without luggage: airport staff shortages
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...shortages-bite

Guardian Australia reported on Thursday that some planes were only being half loaded with checked luggage to ensure flights were not significantly delayed, with passengers told to expect their luggage in the coming days.

“Decisions were made to have these flights depart without baggage to ensure that customers could get to their destination and not face long flight delays or cancellations,” a Qantas spokesperson said on Friday.

The bags would be put on later flights and then sent to customers by courier.
    Georgia McCafferty @georgiemac

My sister was on QF616 from Melbourne to Brisbane yesterday. Entire flight had no bags. They have not been couriered. She still has no bag and has not been contacted about when she can get it and can’t get through to Qantas. So that’s blatantly incorrect.

Tonga struggles with post-volcano waste problem
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-waste-problem

Since the tsunami, in the worst affected villages and the halls in Nuku’alofa where people have been living since moving from the islands in Ha’apai, rubbish bins are filled with plastic water bottles.

There is no recycling collection in Tonga, which means plastic waste ends up in landfill.

Tonga has very limited space for landfill. The country’s only rubbish tip, which has been in operation since 2006, has just four cells for storing rubbish, with each cell meant to be large enough to house at least 20 years’ worth of waste from across the country. The second one is filling up fast.

Some work to remove and recycle waste has started. Last month, volunteers from the No Pelesitiki (plastic) campaign spent two Saturdays collecting plastic waste from more than 1,500 households, which were compacted, wrapped into plastic bales and loaded on the HMAS Canberra for disposal in Australia.

The founder of the No Pelesitiki Campaign, Eleni Leveni Tevi, said people responded strongly to the collection and are keen to see it become a regular occurrence.

Australia election: conservative government voted out after nearly a decade
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...early-a-decade

Australia’s rightwing Coalition government has lost power after nearly a decade in office, with Saturday’s election showing a sharp shift to progressive parties that will result in a Labor government under Anthony Albanese – though he may need the support of climate-focused independents or the Greens.

The Liberal party leader, Scott Morrison, conceded defeat just before 11pm AEST on Saturday, and announced he would step down as leader of his party.

Albanese is expected to be swiftly sworn in as prime minister, before travelling to Tokyo on Tuesday, where he will meet the US president Joe Biden, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida.

France’s outgoing foreign affairs minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, has undiplomatically welcomed the election defeat of Australia’s conservative government after a war of words last year over an abandoned submarine deal between the two countries.

He said: “I can’t stop myself from saying that the defeat of Morrison suits me very well.”

    Hai bà Lê:

Incoming MP for Fowler Dai Le
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...ictable-result

Le, the deputy mayor of Fairfield and a former state Liberal party candidate, said even she had been surprised by the size of the swing against Labor, but said she believed it was a sign that voters felt “insulted” by the decision to impose Keneally onto the seat.

“I think the ALP was arrogant. They took us for granted and just thought, ‘it doesn’t matter, we can put anyone there and those people are stupid enough to vote for us’,” she told the Guardian.

She said she campaigned on local issues – such as healthcare and roads – but also that issues such as the difficulty of accessing small business support during the lockdown for people from non-English backgrounds had been a huge issue in what is one of the most diverse electorates in the country.

The decision to parachute Keneally into a highly diverse, working-class seat despite living on affluent Scotland Island in Sydney’s northern beaches was also criticised at the time by the retiring MP Chris Hayes, who had championed local lawyer Tu Le as his preferred successor.

Tu Le says Labor ‘learned the hard way’
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...oses-safe-seat

After Keneally conceded on Sunday, Tu Le told the Guardian both major parties had been taught a lesson about the importance of listening to local communities, likening Keneally’s loss in Fowler to the teal wave which swept through the Liberal party heartland at Saturday’s election.

“Overall I think it was a fantastic result for the ALP and it’s unfortunate what has occurred in Fowler. But if this is what it takes for us to actually listen to local community voices then I think sometimes it is a lesson that has to be learned the hard way.

“Ultimately I think the community benefits from that and really the community has won in this case because they made their voices heard very clearly and sent a clear message [that] you can’t take us for granted,” she said.

The Australian government has agreed to pay €550m (A$830m) in a settlement with Naval Group over the former Morrison government’s controversial decision to scrap the French attack class submarine project.

The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, announced on Saturday the confidential settlement would draw a line under the cancelled $90bn project.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (Aemo) took the drastic step of suspending the entire national electricity market for the first time in its history on Wednesday.

On Wednesday evening, the NSW energy minister, Matt Kean, told Sydney residents to reduce usage between 5.30pm and 8pm to reduce the risk of blackouts.
