‘enshittification’ is Macquarie Dictionary’s word of the year
https://www.theguardian.com/science/...year-explained
In 2022, Doctorow coined the word “enshittification”, which has just been crowned Macquarie Dictionary’s word of the year.
“We’re all living through the enshittocene, a great enshittening, in which the services that matter to us, that we rely on, are turning into giant piles of shit,” author Cory Doctorow said earlier this year.

Crypto entrepreneur eats banana art he bought for $6.2m
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...for-6m-dollars
Titled Comedian, the conceptual work created by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York last week, with Sun among seven bidders.
Sun said he felt “disbelief” in the first 10 seconds after he won the bid, before realising “this could become something big”. In the 10 seconds after that, he decided he would eat the banana.
The banana was reportedly bought for less than a dollar from a fruit stall on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, staffed by Shah Alam, who works for $12 an hour.
Sun later pledged to buy 100,000 bananas from Alam’s stall and said the bananas would be distributed worldwide as “a celebration of the beautiful connection between everyday life and art”. Sun said he hoped to visit Alam’s stall one day in person.

rising demand for secondhand clothes
https://www.theguardian.com/business...ndhand-clothes
Young people are driving the trend, led by sites such as Vinted and Depop, with one in five Britons having bought presents for friends or family from secondhand online marketplaces in the past. A further 14% are planning to do so for the first time this year, with saving money coming out as the top reason for buying preloved, according to research for the delivery company Yodel.
People are buying secondhand gifts to save money but also amid concerns about the environmental costs of a festive splurge.
The latest outpost opened in London’s Spitalfields this weekend, catering to a growing trend for secondhand Christmas shopping.
About 10% of all gift sales are expected to be preloved this year, equating to £2.05bn being spent on secondhand presents, according to a recent report from analysts at Retail Economics.
