The prime minister visited a shelter on Friday, where after a brief exchange he asked the man whether he worked in business. The man replied that he was homeless.

Sunak then discussed his background in the finance industry and asked if it would be something the man would “like to get in to”.

The man replied: “I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know, I’d like to get through Christmas first.”

“When I suggested the idea of a nude calendar, people said, ‘Are you crazy?’” said Lucía Nicolás, who leads the hamlet’s residents’ association.

“But I saw it as a way to put ourselves on the map and show off our hamlet of 16 residents.”

Slowly, the divisive idea gained steam. By September there were enough residents willing to participate, setting in motion a three-day photo shoot. The result is a 2023 calendar that artfully captures residents alongside the landscapes and traditions that have long defined the hamlet in the region of Murcia.

The undisputed star of the calendar, however, is Pedro Sánchez. At 100 years old, the hamlet’s oldest resident graces the month of December, shirtless and smiling as he holds up a bota, or wineskin. “He was the first one to say yes,” said Nicolás.

The US state department has said it will largely stop writing the word Turkey and instead call the country Türkiye, agreeing to a request by the Turkish government, which resents the inadvertent association with poultry.

“The Turkish embassy did request that we use this spelling in our communications,” state department spokesman Ned Price said.

Turks have long been upset by cartoons and other references that associate their country’s name in English with the bird – believed to be so named because the British thought the species, indigenous to North America, came from the east.

In a recent article, Turkish public broadcaster TRT World noted that a “turkey” can also be slang for a “stupid or silly person”.
