student speaker denounces Harvard over protest response
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...cement-speaker
“As I stand here today, I must take a moment to recognize my peers – the 13 undergraduates in the class of 2024 that will not graduate today,” said student Shruthi Kumar, who was chosen to deliver the English commencement remarks for the undergraduate class.
Kumar’s thoughts were widely supported by other Harvard students. More than 1,000 students walked out of the ceremony as part of a staged protest, many waving Palestinian flags or banners calling for an end to genocide.
Maria Ressa, a Noble peace prize laureate and journalist, warned Harvard not to silence student protesters. “Harvard, you are being tested,” Ressa said.
“The campus protests are testing everyone in America. Protests give voice; they shouldn’t be silenced.”

Columbia University president resigns in wake of Gaza protests
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...shafik-resigns
Her resignation, effective immediately, was unexpected, with the university’s fall semester just weeks from beginning.
Shafik, whose tenure began in July 2023 and made her the first woman to head the prestigious university in New York City, appeared before Congress in April, in highly publicized hearings regarding allegations of on-campus antisemitism. At about the same time, her decision to call the New York police department on to campus, in response to student protests, drew the ire of students and faculty.

France to ban phones at school for under 15
https://www.theguardian.com/world/ar...ldren-under-15
Just under 200 secondary schools will take place in the experiment that will require youngsters to hand over phones on arrival at reception. It takes the prohibition on the devices further than a 2018 law that banned pupils at primary and secondary schools from using their phones on the premises but allowed them to keep possession of them.
Announcing the trial on Tuesday, the acting education minister, Nicole Belloubet, said the aim was to give youngsters a “digital pause”. If the trial proves successful, the ban would be introduced in all schools from January, Belloubet said.

topless medical exams in Japan schools
https://www.theguardian.com/world/ar...-medical-exams
Schools in Japan can require boys and girls as young as five – and as old as 18 – to strip to the waist during health examinations.
It has sparked anger among parents and campaigners who have called on education and health authorities to end the practice before the new academic year begins in April.
Surveys show that most teachers want the requirement to end, while one poll of middle schoolchildren, aged 12-16, found that 95.5% of respondents were unhappy about removing their clothes. “The health exams can have serious repercussions for children,” says Akiyo Tanaka, a city councillor in Nishinomiya. “Some of them continue to experience trauma into adulthood.”
“This shows a total lack of respect for their privacy and dignity.”

Five alleged to certify unqualified teachers
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...eating-scandal
At a press conference on Monday led by the Harris county district attorney, Kim Ogg, prosecutors said the alleged scheme generated at least a million dollars and was used to certify more than 200 unqualified teachers who are currently or have previously worked in Texas public schools.
The alleged scheme was done by having impersonators take the tests on behalf of the applicants, alongside a corrupt testing proctor who was allegedly bribed, prosecutors said. They said that proctor allowed the applicants and the proxy test taker to switch places.
Prosecutors also said that at least 400 fraudulent tests were taken, and that the scheme dates back to 2020.

Columbia protester fights deportation
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...er-deportation
The 21-year-old green card holder, who has lived in the US since she was seven years old, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Monday, arguing the government is “attempting to use immigration enforcement as a bludgeon to suppress speech that they dislike”.
The US district judge Naomi Reice Buchwald said in court that the government had not laid out enough facts about its claims against Chung, who is originally from South Korea. Buchwald granted the temporary restraining order Chung had requested, which also prohibits the government from moving her outside the jurisdiction of the southern district of New York.
The efforts to deport green card holders have sparked widespread backlash from civil liberties and immigrant rights groups. The US is also fighting to deport Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent Columbia graduate who has not been accused of a crime.
Chung was given a ticket for “obstruction of governmental administration”, a common protest citation, according to her suit, filed by Clear, a clinic at the City University of New York law school. But days later, the US government “began a series of unlawful efforts to arrest, detain, and remove Ms. Chung from the country –because of her protected speech”, her lawyers alleged.

Ice agents detain students over pro-Palestinian activism
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...aduate-student
In the videos released on Wednesday, Ozturk is seen walking on the street in daylight when six plainclothes officers approach her, forcibly take her phone and backpack, and place her in handcuffs. The officials, some with badges around their neck, all have their faces covered in the video.
“Is this a kidnapping?” asks a bystander, who appeared to be recording the arrest. The recorded footage of Ozturk’s arrest began circulating on X, formerly Twitter.
In separate security camera footage, released by local television station WCVB, the agents can be heard responding: “We’re the police.”
The bystander can be heard saying: “You don’t look like it. Why are you hiding your faces?”
Tuesday’s operation by DHS officials is the latest in a series of arrests of students who are not accused of any crime but have been involved in on-campus, pro-Palestinian activism, in a sharp escalation of anti-immigration crackdowns and attacks on some political speech in higher education by the Trump administration.
Officials may have already revoked the student visa for Ozturk, who is from Turkey, according to Reuters.
