Former Lincoln County Sheriff Rene Rodriguez resigned in April 2019after being charged with sexually abusing a child in Blaine County. A jury later found him guilty on multiple counts of lewd conduct with a child under the age of 16 and single counts of rape and child sexual abuse.

On May 21, 2020, Rodriguez was sentenced to at least 14 years in prison. His POST certification was revoked weeks later on June 10, according to POST records.

Brandon Curtiss, a former member of the Nez Perce Tribal Police,pleaded guilty on Feb. 6, 2020, to one count of felony grand theft after he was accused of stealing nearly $50,000 from clients at his Meridian-based property management company.

Curtiss is also a former leader of the far-right group 3% of Idaho and traveled to Oregon to provide “security” in the 2016 occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

John Mainini, a former deputy with the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, was decertified on July 16 after he pleaded guilty to a felony count of tax evasion. He was sentenced to three years of supervised probation and ordered to perform community service.

These three and others are listed in the Idaho Statesman’s database on POST decertifications, which includes all Idaho police officers decertified since 2002.

Floyd died on 25 May 2020 when the then Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for more than nine minutes, despite the 46-year-old African American repeatedly saying he could not breathe.

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, noted how the “ stomach-churning video” of Floyd’s death rippled beyond the US.

“The name of George Floyd was chanted in Rome, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Mexico City,” he said. “As recently as this weekend, professional soccer players in the [English] Premier League knelt before the game in support of the global movement against racism touched off by George Floyd.

“This was not only a fight for justice for one man and his family, who I’ve had the privilege to meet with, but a fight against the discrimination that Black men and women suffer at the hands of state power, not just here in America but around the globe.”

Legislation has been pursued in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to increase accountability or oversight of police; 24 states have enacted new laws.

Floyd was honoured across America on Tuesday. In Minneapolis, a foundation created in his memory organised an afternoon of music and food in a park near the downtown courtroom where Chauvin stood trial. Nine minutes of silence were observed. Later, mourners were to gather for a candlelight vigil.

Days after Juneteenth was made a national holiday, communities across the US are coming together to celebrate 19 June 1865, the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas, freeing slaves in the final Confederate state to have abolition.

Terrence Floyd, whose brother George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in May last year, unveiled a statute of his sibling during a Saturday morning Juneteenth rally in Brooklyn, New York.

When Joe Biden signed into law the bill recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday known as “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” he said: “Great nations don’t ignore their most painful moments...Great nations don’t walk away. We come to terms with the mistakes we made. And remembering those moments, we begin to heal and grow stronger.”

On Saturday, Biden echoed his prior remarks. “Juneteenth marks both the long, hard night of slavery and subjugation – and the promise of that brighter morning to come. It’s a day of profound weight and power. Today and every day, we must work to ensure our nation finally lives up to its promise of equality for all,” he said on Twitter.

Confederate statue removed from city hall in Louisiana after 99 years

The removal came a day after United Daughters of the Confederacy signed a settlement agreeing to move the statue of Gen Alfred Mouton or let the city do so. A trial had been scheduled for 26 July.

“The Confederacy has surrendered,” attorney Jerome Moroux told the Advocate. Moroux represented the city and 16 city residents who wanted the statue gone.
