    Kiêng sát sanh:

Humane alternatives to killing rampant creatures
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...says-scientist

One solution is to develop boar contraceptives. “Preventing these animals from breeding is a humane way to limit numbers,” added Massei, who will be speaking at the European vertebrate pest management conference in Florence.

The delivery method is known as the Boar-Operated System and it uses metal cones placed over dishes of food that only wild pigs can lift with their snouts. Other animals cannot access the plates. “That means we can get contraceptives into boar and only boar,” said Massei.

A similar approach has already been implemented to tackle grey squirrels. Mixed with hazelnut spread – a top squirrel treat – the drug is placed in pots in feeding boxes that only they can access. The environment minister, Richard Benyon, recently argued that the project could help eradicate the grey squirrel in the UK – without killing them.

    Như chim bỏ đường bay:

Birds flock to huge rubbish dump in Spain
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...southern-spain

It is easy for the birds to find food among the mountains of garbage in the dump at Los Barrios, near Cádiz, that receives the waste of 400,000 people living in Gibraltar and the surrounding area.Since July ornithologists have counted 210,000 kites and 125,000 storks crossing the strait.

But many Spanish and central European storks have chosen to stay in Spain, feeding from the dump, rather than make the long journey south. As a result, there is now a stable population of about 37,000 birds wintering there, according to SEO/Birdlife.

Researchers say that as well as food, the birds eat a lot of plastic, rubber and toxic substances on the landfills. There are also rats, which the kites hunt.

    Bee Careful, Canada!

Five million bees escape after crates of hives fall off truck in Canada
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-truck-ontario

Police near Toronto have warned drivers to keep their car windows closed after a truck spilled crates carrying five million bees on to a road

It was “quite the scene”, Anderson said. “Crates were literally on the road and swarms of bees were flying around,” he said. “The initial beekeeper that was on scene was apparently stung a few times.”

By about 9.15am, police said most of the five million bees had been safely collected and the crates were being hauled away. Some crates had been left behind for the uncollected bees to return to them on their own.

    Xe bò:

huge African bull riding shotgun in car
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ebraska-watusi

In fact, the animal was a Watusi bull – a breed of cattle famous in Africa with gigantic horns.

The driver was identified as Lee Meyer of nearby Neligh and police performed a traffic stop on his car. Meyer told them that the Watusi bull’s name was Howdy Doody.

“The officer wrote him some warnings,” Reiman told the TV channel. “There were some citable issues with that situation. The officer chose to write him a warning and ask him to take the animal back home and leave the city.”

Meyer”s car appeared specially outfitted to have a bull as a passenger.

langurs employed to deter rhesus monkeys in Delhi
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...g20-delhi-2023

Rhesus monkeys are a menace in many areas in India’s national capital, running across busy roads without warning – putting both themselves and motorists at risk – and often attacking unsuspecting pedestrians or residents.

The langur, a bigger primate with a black face, is commonly used by authorities in the city to scare away monkeys, officials said.

Apart from placing the cutouts of langurs along major roads and in locations that monkeys tend to frequent, the NDMC has deployed “30 to 40 people” who mock their sounds to create the impression that the animals are alive and moving.

    Shark week:

yacht damaged by multiple shark attacks
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...-shark-attacks

In a post to social media, the crew, who were on a round-the-world expedition called Russian Ocean Way, which they were documenting online, said they were first attacked by sharks on 4 September, leaving the rear left “cylinder” of their nine-metre inflatable catamaran damaged.

“As a result, [it] completely submerged under water,” a post on the crew’s Instagram account reads.

The following day, the catamaran was again attacked by sharks, with the right “balloon” becoming damaged.

According to the post, the catamaran then began to sink, which is when the crew sent an SOS signal.

Như con miêu ngước lên trời, yêu trăng sao vời vợi:

Parisian stray cat called Félicette was blasted far from Earth
    https://www.theguardian.com/science/...rth-atmosphere

A small black-and-white Parisian stray, Félicette, flew on a French rocket on a sub-orbital mission in October 1963 that reached an altitude of 154km, taking her to a place where no feline had gone before – or since.

In the early 60s, Russia preferred dogs, the US generally chose monkeys.

But France decided to be different. A total of 14 stray cats were gathered by staff at France’s space agency Cerma – Centre d’Enseignement et de Recherches de Médecine Aéronautique – for selection as feline astronauts, though the cats were deliberately not given names in order to prevent scientists from becoming too fond of them. The cat selected to travel to space was simply known as C341.

Then, after news was announced of its flight on a Veronique rocket on 18 October 1963 and subsequent safe return to Earth, the French press decided this feline trailblazer had to have a name. They picked Felix after the cartoon cat character, only to discover that C341 was female. Her name was adjusted to Félicette, as a result.
    Such a cool cat!

According to Irvine police spokesperson Kyle Oldoerp, who spoke to the Los Angeles Times, one of the arrestees said: “Oh, I think my dog is overdosing.”

“She knew the symptoms because it was the second time the dog had overdosed,” Oldoerp added.

“Officers gave the dog a dose of Narcan, and she immediately began to recover,” police said in a statement.
