Bison proliferate under Native American stewardship
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...im-stewarsdhip

European settlers destroyed that balance when they slaughtered the great herds. Bison almost went extinct until conservationists including Teddy Roosevelt intervened to re-establish a small number of herds largely on federal lands.

The US interior secretary, Deb Haaland, the first Native American cabinet secretary, said in an interview that settlers “wanted to populate the western half of the United States because there were so many people in the east”.

“They wanted all of the Indians dead so they could take their land away,” she said.

The thinking at the time, she added, was “‘if we kill off the buffalo, the Indians will die. They won’t have anything to eat.”’

World’s oldest tortoise prepares for 190th birthday
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...birthday-party

Living on Saint Helena since 1882, when he arrived as a gift to the governor of the small south Atlantic island, he is no stranger to fame, having scooped awards from the Guinness World Records for being the oldest known living land animal and the oldest chelonian – an order comprising tortoises, turtles and terrapins – ever recorded.

He has also been at the heart of romantic intrigue: after a period of irritability, Jonathan was presented with a mate in 1991 with whom he happily developed an intimate relationship. But 26 years later the lack of offspring was explained when his amorous partner – Frederica – turned out, upon inspection, to be a male.

The Guinness World Records noted: “Jonathan’s age is an estimation based on the fact that he was fully mature, and hence at least 50 years old, when he arrived in Saint Helena from Seychelles in 1882. In all likelihood, he is even older than we think.”.

Two-year-old girl survives coyote attack in Los Angeles daylight
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...geles-daylight

Home security video obtained by KTLA-TV showed the animal grab and drag the toddler across her lawn and sidewalk, seconds after her father took her out of a car seat, set her down and turned back inside the vehicle to gather her toys. They had just arrived home from preschool.

Ariel Eliyahuo heard his daughter screaming on the other side of the SUV, then realized she was being attacked by what appeared to be a coyote. He shouted and charged at the animal, causing it to release the girl. The coyote paused briefly a short distance away, then scampered off.

the extraordinary sawshark with a weapon-like snout
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...pon-like-snout

These are sawsharks and they use their formidable headgear to slash through shoals of fish. The moustache is a sensory device that helps the sharks detect prey.

Long before western scientists named them, people in fishing communities in south-west Madagascar already knew about metre-long, sixgill sawsharks and called them vae vae.

Something that sets these species apart from previously known sawsharks is that their moustaches (technically known as barbels) lie closer to the tip of their snouts, but Weigmann doesn’t yet know the relevance of this.

Biden expected to sign law ending big cat ownership
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...king-ownership

Joe Biden is expected to swiftly sign the new legislation, which requires that only certified zoos and universities are allowed to hold lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars and other large cats, following its passage in the US Senate this week. The House of Representatives voted for the bill, called the Big Cat Public Safety Act, in July.

The possession of tigers, in particular, is rife among private breeders and owners of roadside zoos in the US, with 30 states simply requiring that people fill out a form and obtain a $30 license to acquire the animals. Conservationists have long pushed to end this practice, claiming it leads to abusive treatment of big cats and poses a risk to the public.

humpback whale completes 5,000km journey – with a broken back
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...olumbia-hawaii

Over the course of nearly three months, navigating ocean swells and currents, vast expanses of flat water and immense pain, Moon the humpback whale completed a journey of 5,000km (3,100 miles) from the waters of British Columbia to Hawaii – all with a broken back.

In September, a drone photographed a humpback whale with a grievous injury to its lower back: the entire lower portion of its trunk bent into an unnatural “S” shape – likely the result of a strike from a boat.

“Without the use of her tail, she was literally doing the breaststroke to make that migration. It’s absolutely amazing,” said Janie Wray, CEO and lead researcher for BC Whales, a non-profit that studies cetaceans off the province’s west coast. “But also it just breaks your heart.”

Three chimpanzees shot dead after escape from Swedish zoo
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...om-swedish-zoo

Three chimpanzees escaped from their enclosure in a Swedish zoo for several hours before being shot dead, according to Swedish media, while a fourth was wounded and a fifth was believed to have returned unharmed to the zoo of its own accord.

Annika Troselius, a spokeswoman for the Furuviksparken zoo near Gävle, 165km (100 miles) north of Stockholm, said the animals had had to be put down because there was not enough tranquiliser to subdue all of them.

    Lệnh hành quyết: Ratham City

New York’s charge against the city’s rat population
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ms-meera-joshi

The city’s rat population, it has been widely reported, has become something of an obsession for Adams, who marks his first year in office on 1 January. Two months ago, he laid out a three-prong plan to fashion a “livable city” out of New York. “Fighting crime, fighting inequality,” he said, “and fighting rats.”

Still, Adams is determined. “I hate rats,” he said at a department of sanitation press conference. “And we are going to kill some rats.” Jessica Tisch, the sanitation commissioner, chimed in: “The rats don’t run this city. We do.”

But some have expressed disquiet at Adam’s emphasis on rodent annihilation, arguing that the problem is human behavior and the rats are enthusiastic ride-alongs to poor hygiene practices.

‘terrifying’ dingo attack near camping ground on K’gari
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...round-on-kgari

The child, aged five, was bitten on the head, arm, and buttocks at the remote Ocean Lake camping area in K’gari (Fraser Island) on Sunday afternoon.

“The child sustained multiple minor bites before his father managed to get the dingo off him,” RACQ LifeFlight Rescue said.

Park rangers said the boy had not provoked the dingo and would investigate to identify the animal involved.
