    Squid Game:

    squid farming
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...atches-plummet

Researchers at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) say their system produced a reliable supply of squid and has the potential to be commercialised.

Scientists have spent decades attempting to farm squid – a method long considered particularly challenging due to the animal’s behaviour – but have had little success, according to OIST. The creatures are known to be aggressive and sensitive to water flow, and have particular food preferences and a complex lifecycle.

Animal rights campaigners, however, say that farming carnivorous species, such as squid, is unsustainable because it would require extracting other marine species from already strained fisheries using inhumane fishing practices.

    Toad licking
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...k-hallucinogen

[QUOTE]The US National Park Service is warning people to stop licking one of the largest toads in America, due to a toxin it secretes from its glands that can create a hallucinogenic experience.

Toad-licking, however, has become a way to get high, and has long been considered life-threatening. Not every toad can induce a high, and for those that can, the high they deliver varies from toad to toad.

Users often get high from either licking the back of a toad directly or by storing toxins secreted by the toad to use later.

[Hallucinations and euphoria are the known effects of this activity, but it can also cause anxiety, nausea or seizures and, in some cases, death. And the park service would definitely prefer if people stopped doing it./QUOTE]

Tyrannosaurus rex skull expected to fetch £13m
    https://www.theguardian.com/science/...-at-us-auction

The 76m-year-old skull, nicknamed Maximus, is being sold by an anonymous seller at a live auction on 9 December.

The skull, which weighs 91kg (200lb) and measures about two metres, is said to be one of the most complete specimens ever found and rivals those held in museum collections.

It was excavated in 2020 and 2021 in Harding county, South Dakota, where the T rex skeletons named Sue and Stan were found. The area has been dubbed “the world capital for T rexes”.

Sue, the first dinosaur sold at auction, fetched $8.3m in 1997. Stan, the fifth-most complete T rex skeleton discovered to date, sold for $31.8m in 2020; it went to a mystery buyer later found to be the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, where it is due to go on display in 2025.

Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s head of science and popular culture, said two large puncture holes in the skull were evidence that the animal had been in a fight, probably with another T rex.

US farms lobby to use ‘cruellest’ killing method as bird flu rages
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...bird-flu-rages

In the US, “ventilation shutdown plus” (VSD+) – which brings on heatstroke by exposing large numbers of birds to high heat for a minimum of three hours – is now considered a last resort.

Poultry producers have to get permission to use it after a case of avian flu is detected.
Animal advocates have described the method as “basically cooking animals alive”.

European officials list it among methods that “are likely to be highly painful” and “must never be used”.

Animal welfare campaigners say the industry prefers ventilation shutdown because it is the “easiest and cheapest”.

Replace animal farms with micro-organism tanks
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...tion-emissions

Enough protein to feed the entire world could be produced on an area of land smaller than London if we replace animal farming with factories producing micro-organisms, a campaign has said.

The Reboot Food manifesto argues that three-quarters of the world’s farmland should be rewilded instead.

Emissions from livestock farming account for at least 16.5% of the planet’s greenhouse gases, according to a study. A number of experts have been calling for a reduction in animal protein in our diets.

Fiji stray dogs after Covid breeding boom

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-breeding-boom

The population of stray dogs across the Pacific country has exploded in the last few years, sparked by a dog baby boom, which occurred as neutering initiatives stopped during the pandemic and border closures halted the flow of essential international volunteer vets.

Naryan estimates that in the capital, Suva, alone, there are between 20,000 and 30,000 dogs on the loose. Some are stray while others are roaming – owned by people but allowed to freely roam the streets.

Stray dogs carry diseases, frequent busy roads and some have even made headlines for vicious attacks on children.

Countries vote to regulate shark fin trade
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...n-cites-panama

Studies indicate 37% of shark and ray species face extinction and ocean-going, or pelagic, sharks have declined by more than 70% in just 50 years. Scientists say these declines are a direct result of overfishing and unregulated international trade, stemming from a shortfall in national and international management.

But critics, including marine biologists, say the Cites listing could have the opposite effect, driving up the hidden market price for fins and meat and increasing illegal shark fishing.

In 2021, fin imports from Ecuador to Peru – the leading exporter of fins in the Americas – reached double pre-pandemic levels, according to research by Oceana Peru. Of the 300 tonnes of dried fins that came from Ecuador, more than 160 tonnes came from a Cites-listed species, the endangered pelagic thresher shark, which is targeted for its exceptionally long fins.

NBC News reported that the cat’s brush with potential tragedy was detected on 16 November when a bag was checked from JFK to Atlanta for a connecting flight to Florida.

As soon as the X-ray machine saw the cat, the luggage was opened. The cat was rescued safe and sound.

    Angry birds:

    turkeys terrorize Massachusetts town
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...n-thanksgiving

People in Woburn, north-west of Boston, have been subjected to a barrage of attacks and intimidation by a group of five wild turkeys, with the situation forcing some to take up improvised weapons and residents reporting being trapped in their homes.

The turkeys, led by a male bird nicknamed Kevin, arrived two years ago. Initially the birds were docile, but as time passed they have become ever more pugnacious, leaving Woburners fearful for their safetyand forced to adapt their behavior.

The population of wild turkeys has ballooned in Massachusetts in recent years. The birds, which were reintroduced to the state in the 1970s, sleep in trees or even on lampposts at night, but during the day the Woburn gang of five spends most of its time on Tolson’s lawn.
