India reintroduces cheetahs to wild after big cats airlifted from Namibia
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...d-from-namibia
Eight Namibian cheetahs have been airlifted to India, part of an ambitious project to reintroduce the big cats after they were driven to extinction there decades ago, officials and vets said.
The wild cheetahs were moved by road from a game park north of the Namibian capital of Windhoek on Friday to board a chartered Boeing 747 dubbed “Cat plane” for an 11-hour flight.
Critics have warned that the Namibian cheetahs may struggle to adapt to the Indian habitat and may clash with the significant number of leopards already present. But organisers are unfazed.

An apple a day keeps the bear around:
Canadian national park urges locals to remove bear-attracting bushes
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...racting-bushes
Residents living in the Jasper national park townsite have been warned that fruit trees on their properties are luring in black bears and need to be removed as soon as possible.
Non-native apple and cherry trees, as well as fruit bushes, which have lured in bears searching for high-calorie foods ahead of winter, have become the focus of park staff.
Parks Canada staff have “hazed” the bears, using paint balls, chalk balls and loud noises in an attempt to scare them away from the area.
But strategies that have worked in the past are no match for the sugary fruit.
In neighbouring Banff, which has also struggled to reduce human-bear interactions, the municipality previously explored the idea of a bylaw banning fruit trees.

bar-going raccoon
https://www.theguardian.com/environm...-dakota-arrest
Erin Christensen faces up to two years in prison and a $7,500 fine after she took the raccoon to Maddock Bar for happy hour on 6 September.
Christensen said her family found Rocky on the side of a road about three months ago. She said they were nursing the raccoon back to health, and planned to release him back into the wild.
Instead, Rocky was euthanized after his capture. He tested negative for rabies.
Raccoons live for about one to three years in the wild, National Geographic Kids said, but in captivity some raccoons have lived for up to 20 years.

Cóc sucker:
Crocs v cane toads
https://www.theguardian.com/australi...toxic-intruder
Food portions diminish, crocodiles grow hungrier in the heat, and cane toads begin to seek water as well. When cane toads and crocs overlap, “it becomes the perfect storm”.
Cane toads were introduced to Australia almost 100 years ago as a method of crop control in Queensland. Carrying foreign toxins, they began spreading from northern to Western Australia.
Native apex predators that feed on frogs, such as freshwater crocodiles, iguanas, snakes and quolls, attempt to eat the toads and are killed by their toxins.
Last year, 60 freshwater crocodiles were found poisoned and killed by cane toads at Danggu Gorge in WA’s Kimberley region.

New Zealand bans live animal exports from April 2023
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...rom-april-2023
Live exports have long been controversial in Australia and New Zealand, and subject to long-term campaigns by animal rights groups. When they go wrong, they often result in thousands of animals drowning.
Earlier this year, more than 15,000 sheep drowned after a live export ship sank in Sudan, and in 2020 a capsize killed 14,000 sheep. In 2021, 3,000 cattle were stranded at sea for three months, leaving many dead, dying, starving or extremely dehydrated.
Because New Zealand is so remote, even a best-case-scenario journey is often arduous for animals.
New Zealand exported 134,722 cattle last year, and live exports represented about 0.6% of primary sector exports. New Zealand only exports animals for breeding, not slaughter.
In Australia, the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, recently reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ending the trade, but said it would not be phased out before 2025.

Head over eels: Lươn y như hàng lậu
Spanish police seize smuggled baby eels worth €270,000
https://www.theguardian.com/environm...gled-baby-eels
The elvers, or glass eels – prized as a delicacy in Spain and parts of east Asia – were found after officers carried out almost 3,000 checks and inspections in ports, airports and other transport hubs.
In February 2020, a seafood salesman was found guilty of smuggling 200kg of glass eels worth more than £53m out of the UK.
Gilbert Khoo, 66, transported the elvers from London to Hong Kong hidden beneath other fish between 2015 and 2017.

thousands of bluebottles wash up on Sydney beaches
https://www.theguardian.com/australi...sydney-beaches
Armadas of bluebottles have washed up on the shores of Australian beaches this week as heavy rainfall causes agitated surf conditions.
The jellyfish have been spotted on the shores of Sydney beaches, including Bronte and Manly, with sightings continuing up and down the east coast. Maroubra beach was closed on Friday due to dangerous conditions and “large numbers of bluebottles”.
Despite one in six Australians experiencing the pain of a marine stinger, very little is known about the bluebottle, its life cycle and what brings them to the coast.
