Pet dog flown to Saudi Arabia instead of Tennessee
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ritish-airways
Five-year-old Bluebell had been adopted by her human family in London, England, but was relocating with them back to Nashville when British Airways made a rather drastic mistake and instead she was flown off to Saudi Arabia, local TV station WVLT8 reported.
Meanwhile, in Nashville, Bluebell’s owner, Madison Miller, was being presented with the wrong dog. Cue a global search for Bluebell’s actual whereabouts.
Eventually the Millers were shown a picture of Bluebell, unhappy in her crate and thousands of miles away. Finally, three days and three flights later, Bluebell was returned to the Millers.

(N.H.K) [qd]

Walrus draws crowds on New Year’s Eve
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...-new-years-eve
The marine mammal arrived in Scarborough on Friday night and has drawn
huge crowds to the harbour on New Year’s Eve.
Council leader Steve Siddons said: “We are really disappointed that we’ve had to cancel the fireworks but the welfare of the walrus has to take precedence.”
Stuart Ford, who runs the Sealife Safari boat tour agency, told PA: “I was going down to my boat and there it was on the slipway – magnificent. It’s got to be half a tonne.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever seen one. It’s huge. We see seals quite regularly round Scarborough coastline but something of that size, it’s enormous.”

Fuah: the vegan foie gras selling out across Spain
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeands...-out-europe-us
The vegan offerings come as the animal product has routinely found itself in the headlines. King Charles reportedly told animal rights campaigners in November that foie gras would not be served in royal residences, while the US state of California as well as New York City have both sought to ban the product.
It was against this backdrop that Fernández and his team began fashioning their take on foie out of cashews, coconut oil and beetroot extract. The aim was to produce a hyperrealistic plant-based version, said Fernández, one aimed at vegans and vegetarians but also meat-eaters.
The company laboured over the recipe for more than a year, tweaking it 800 times. After being taste-tested by more than 150 people, the plant-based take on foie gras was deemed ready for market, setting in motion a modest plan to deliver 5,000 units to supermarkets and speciality stores before the holiday season.
Within 12 hours of its launch in mid-December, the units had sold out across Spain. The company scrambled to restock – and watched in awe as another 30,000 units flew off shelves.

River of melted butter blocks Wisconsin waterway after fire at dairy plant
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...t-canal-melted
The conflagration erupted at an Associated Milk Producers, Inc facility in Portage around 9pm local time, firefighters said on Wednesday. Nobody was injured.
Authorities said it was unclear what caused the blaze, which is under investigation, and will assess the runoff before deciding how best to clean it up.
Firefighters tried to enter the burning building but were deterred “due to the heavy smoke and runoff”. The fire broke out in a butter-storage room, and the butter started to “flow” throughout the facility.

New Zealand egg shortage sparks scramble for poultry
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...le-for-poultry
The cages – considered detrimental to the birds’ health and wellbeing – were outlawed from 1 January 2023. The government’s commitment to ban them was made in 2012, when 86% of layer hens were battery-farmed. By December 2022, that number had fallen to 10%.
Purchase limits and empty shelves at the supermarkets have apparently prompted dreams of back yard farming for some.
Those adopting chickens “might be surprised to discover” that the birds could live for a decade or longer, might produce eggs only during their first two or three years, and would not start laying for several months, she said.
“They are fun companion animals to have,” Clezy said. “Don’t buy them as egg producers.”
