Paul Gascoigne says he is a ‘sad drunk’ and lives in his agent’s spare room
https://www.theguardian.com/football...ent-spare-room
The former England midfielder, four years after having surgery to prevent him from consuming alcohol, says he continues to drink, often alone at home. He says he “let myself down” by turning to alcohol after he finished his playing career.
“I used to be a happy drunk, I ain’t any more … I’m a sad drunk,” Gascoigne told the High Performance podcast.
Recognised as one of the most talented English players of all time, Gascoigne was a massive cultural figure during the 1990s, but his life since has become publicly defined by his addictions. He helped England to a World Cup semi-final in 1990 on the way to earning 57 caps. His club career included spells at Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Everton and Middlesbrough.

Women’s ski race marred by drunk fans fighting
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/20...-fans-fighting
The Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that several fights broke out, with some fans storming the barriers towards the ski slope and falling over a fence there. In total, 130 individuals aged 16 to 20 reportedly required assistance from the Red Cross station in the area, either due to injuries or intoxication.
Swedish competitor, Moa Lundgren, told the newspaper Expressen that she had sensed a booze-fuelled atmosphere as she raced. “It really smelled of alcohol and something sweet out on the track,” she said.
“It was a naval battle,” Lundgren added, using a common Scandinavian expression for drunken chaos. Organisers will be determined to avoid a repeat of Saturday’s scenes when the men’s 50km race takes place at the same venue on Sunday.

Ukrainians embrace Usyk’s boxing victory
https://www.theguardian.com/world/ar...oxing-champion
From the capital, Kyiv, to the heavily attacked region of Kharkiv, news of Oleksandr Usyk’s win over Tyson Fury brought war-weary Ukrainians a rare and very welcome moment of victory and celebration.Usyk, who became the first undisputed world heavyweight champion this century after his victory in Riyadh in the early hours of Sunday, said his triumph did not belong to him alone.
“It’s for my God, my supporters, my country, the Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian mothers and fathers, children,” he said.
That sentiment was echoed by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. “The Ukrainians hit hard! And in the end, all our opponents will be defeated,” he wrote on Telegram soon after the fight. Zelenskiy added that Usyk’s success showed that “Ukrainian endurance and strength give birth to Ukrainian victory”.

schadenfreude in Germany over Tuchel and England
https://www.theguardian.com/football...el-and-england
Bild went in even harder. “The motherland of football is getting a German Papa. Astounding!” wrote the tabloid’s leading football commentator, Matthias Brügelmann, appearing to rub salt into the wounds of the Daily Mail’s anguish, expressed, on its back page on Wednesday, as: “A Dark Day for England [as] Three Lions gamble on a GERMAN.”
There has been smirking over some of the more generous English newspaper takes: the Daily Star’s “A German in charge of the England team? – At least we’ll be sure to win the penalties”; or the Sun welcoming a “Tuch of Class” and stating: “Fußball kommt nach Hause”.

Chắc là football hông muốn về nhà. Chỉ có bịnh kỳ thị người ngoại quốc thì về nhà hoài. Xenophobia is coming home.
Thuê huấn luyện viên từ nước khác là chuyện có thường rồi. Biết đâu nhờ vậy là ẳm cái cúp, như Hy lạp 20 năm trước.
Thomas Tuchel is an issue worth worrying about
https://www.theguardian.com/football...ngland-manager
Or indeed, if we forget why England have an overseas manager, which is that English football decided a while back it’s just not commercially necessary to produce coaches.
With this in mind, why not direct all that anger and discontent at the structures of English football, not its outcomes? This has been going on for decades. English football has no school, no style, no recognisable indigenous coaching culture. Now we have a German and it’s a problem.

10-19-2024, 09:46 PM #388Liên hệp Châu Âu đang long lanh ủa lộn lung linh, ủa lộn rung rinh vụ dân tị nạn.

https://www.theguardian.com/football...g-awards-night
Bonmatí became the second player to retain the women’s award since its inception in 2018, following in the footsteps of her Barcelona teammate Alexia Putellas. The playmaker was influential in another Liga F and Champions League double for Barcelona, also pulling the strings as Spain won the women’s Nations League earlier this year.
The runner-up Caroline Graham Hansen and third-placed Salma Paralluelo completed a full Barca podium.
