Elon Musk of Guiness:
Elon Musk breaks world record for largest loss of personal fortune in history
https://www.theguardian.com/technolo...une-in-history
Elon Musk has broken the world record for the largest loss of personal fortune in history, according to a Guinness World Records report.
The tech billionaire has lost approximately $182bn (£150bn) since November 2021, although other sources suggest that it could actually be closer to $200bn, the report said.
The majority of Musk’s fortune is tied up in Tesla stock, the value of which plummeted 65% in a tumultuous 2022, the Guinness World Records report said.

Elon Musk of Australia:
China takes great leap forward in Australia’s EV car market
https://www.theguardian.com/australi...-vehicles-cars
In 2022, sales of Chinese-made vehicles in Australia totalled 122,845 units, a 61.1% increase on the previous year, according to Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries data. In December, imports from China were more than double a year earlier.
The increase made China the fourth-largest import source, narrowing the gap with larger rivals. Cars sourced from Japan still dominate, making up just less than a third of the market of 1.1m vehicles even as sales declined almost 6% for the year. Imports from Thailand with 245,000, and South Korea at just over 159,000, both rose less than 10%.
The chief executive of Australia’s Electric Vehicle Council, Behyad Jafari, said Australians were increasingly comfortable buying Chinese-made cars, including EVs. Well known brands, such US-based Teslas, and Polestar, a Volvo offshoot, sourced the cars they sold in Australia from their Chinese factories.

Tuk-tuks go green amid rising demand for electric models
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...lectric-models
In 2021, the levels of the pollutant PM2.5m in Thailand were four times higher than World Health Organization guidance. Inhalation of PM2.5 can cause respiratory problems and heart issues. In 2019, pollution was to blame for more than 31,000 deaths in the country.
The demand for electric tuk-tuks is growing, Kritayakirana says. In 2022, their number increased from 263 to 498, according to the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand. The government has been encouraging EV uptake since 2015.
Electric tuk-tuks can only travel short distances before needing to be charged, while the price to buy one is about 400,000 baht ($12,000), Cluckie says. The starting price for a traditional tuk-tuk is about 150,000 baht ($4,500).

The weaponised SUV
https://www.theguardian.com/artandde...navi-vengeange
The Rezvani Vengeance SUV boasts bulletproof glass, blinding strobe lights, electrified doorhandles, and wing mirrors that can shoot pepper spray.
The car can release a dense smoke screen to confuse people following you, as well as detect electromagnetic pulses from nuclear weapons.
The vehicle’s hefty steel ram bumpers and military-grade tyres would make mincemeat of any parking barrier.
The company was founded in 2014 by Ferris Rezvani, whose father was an F4 Phantom fighter pilot in the Iranian air force. Rezvani Jr decided to start a car company to “create the same high-speed thrill of flying on the ground”. The company’s first car design was named Beast, followed by one called Tank.

Ford to cut nearly 4,000 jobs in Europe
https://www.theguardian.com/business...-cut-uk-europe
The US carmaker said it planned to eliminate 3,800 product development and administration jobs across Europe, citing rising costs and the need to speed up its switch from petrol and diesel engines to electric vehicles.
Ford said about 2,300 jobs will be cut in Germany, 1,300 in the UK and 200 in the rest of Europe, adding that it intends to achieve the reductions through voluntary redundancies. Some 2,800 of the jobs will be engineering roles, while another 1,000 will be administrative jobs. Ford employs about 34,000 people in Europe, of which about 6,500 are in the UK.
“Going electric you don’t need internal combustion engines. You don’t need people designing internal combustion engines. There is going to be more and more of this. Ford happens to be quick off the blocks.”

EU lawmakers approve effective 2035 ban on new fossil fuel cars
By Kate Abnett
BRUSSELS, Feb 14 (Reuters) - The European Parliament on Tuesday formally approved a law to effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the European Union from 2035, aiming to speed up the switch to electric vehicles and combat climate change.
The landmark rules will require that by 2035 carmakers must achieve a 100% cut in CO2 emissions from new cars sold, which would make it impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the 27-country bloc.
The law will also set a 55% cut in CO2 emissions for new cars sold from 2030 versus 2021 levels, much higher than the existing target of a 37.5%.
"The operating costs of an electric vehicle are already lower than the operating costs of a vehicle with an internal combustion engine," Jan Huitema, the parliament's lead negotiator on the rules, said, adding that it was crucial to bring more affordable electric vehicles to consumers.
EU countries agreed the deal with lawmakers last October, but still need to formally rubber stamp the rules before they can take effect. Final approval is expected in March

New vans must comply with a 100% CO2 cut by 2035, and a 50% cut by 2030, compared with 2021 levels.
Many carmakers in Europe have announced investments in electrification.
Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) chief executive Thomas Schaefer said last year that from 2033 the brand will only produce electric cars in Europe.
Still, the EU law met resistance from some industry and countries when it was proposed in July 2021. As a result, the final deal includes some flexibilities including that small carmakers producing less than 10,000 vehicles per year can negotiate weaker targets until 2036.
The car CO2 law is part a broader package of tougher EU climate policies, designed to deliver the bloc's targets to slash greenhouse gas emissions this decade.
