Chinese police arrest nine after women attacked at restaurant

CCTV footage of the incident widely circulated online shows a man placing his hand on a woman’s back as she shares a meal with two companions at a barbecue restaurant in the city of Tangshan in Hebei province in the early hours of Friday.

After the woman pushes him away, the man strikes her before others drag her outside and deal a barrage of blows as she lies on the ground. Another woman is also knocked to the floor.

Tangshan police said on Saturday that all nine of the men involved in the latest violent incident had been arrested. Responding to the national outrage, the Communist party chief in the city, Wu Weidong, was quoted by local media as saying the men would be punished according to the law and that the authorities should launch a campaign to eradicate “gangsters and evil forces”.

Internet censors blocked keywords linked to the #MeToo movement after a wave of women accused university professors of sexual harassment in 2018. Campaigners also say domestic abuse remains pervasive and under-reported.

The fire at a Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co plant in outlying Jinshan district broke out around 4am but was brought under control later that morning, according to state news agency Xinhua.

At the petrochemical plant, an early morning explosion was heard by residents as far as 6km (four miles) away, according to local media.

Videos on social media showed a large cloud of fire and ash billowing upwards.

In one aerial video, three fires could be seen in separate buildings.

Sri Lanka has increased the price of fuel by up to 22% after the energy minister warned it had virtually run out of petrol and diesel after several expected shipments were delayed.

Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said on Sunday it had raised the price of diesel, used widely in public transport, by 15% to 460 rupees ($1.27) a litre while upping petrol 22% to 550 rupees ($1.52).

The embassy said it had committed $158.75m in new financing in the past two weeks to help Sri Lankans.

The UN has already issued an emergency appeal to raise $47m to feed the most vulnerable segments of the island’s 22 million people.

About 1.7 million need “life-saving assistance”, according to the UN, with four out of five people reducing their food intake due to severe shortages and galloping prices.

The government has shut non-essential state institutions along with schools for two weeks to reduce commuting because of the energy crisis, as well as giving public servants time off to grow food.

Japan’s government has warned millions of people in the Tokyo region to save energy or face power cuts, as the capital battles record June temperatures after a premature end to the rainy season.

Temperatures of 35C (95F) were forecast in the city throughout the day, with similarly extreme weather expected for the rest of the week, according to the Japanese meteorological agency.

The heat has hit other parts of the country in recent days. On Sunday, Isesaki city in Gunma prefecture, north of Tokyo, recorded the country’s highest temperature in June, at 40.2C.

Shinzo Abe: Japan ex-PM injured after reported gunshot attack


Shinzo Abe is Japan's longest-serving prime minister

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has collapsed after he was shot at an event in the city of Nara.

Mr Abe was shot twice, with the second shot hitting him in the back, causing him to fall to the ground. Reports say his attacker has since been arrested.

Ex-Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe said in a tweet that Mr Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest.

The term is often used before a death is officially confirmed in Japan.

Videos circulating on social media, which could not be verified, appear to show paramedics huddled around Mr Abe in the middle of a street. He has now reportedly been rushed to hospital.

Mr Abe was giving a stump speech for a candidate in Nara when the attacked happened - eye-witnesses say they saw a man with what they described as a large gun fire from behind, according to the BBC's Japan correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes.

The first shot appears to have missed but the second shot hit Mr Abe in the back. He immediately fell to the ground bleeding.

Security then detained the attacker who made no attempt to run.

Local news broadcaster NHK reports that police have seized his gun and identified him.

Mr Abe, who was Japan's longest-serving prime minister, stepped down in 2020 citing health reasons. He later revealed that he had suffered a relapse of ulcerative colitis, an intestinal disease.

He was succeeded by his close party ally Yoshihide Suga, who was later replaced by Fumio Kishida.

Incidents of gun violence are rare in Japan, where handguns are banned - and incidents of political violence are almost unheard of.

In 2014, there were just six incidents of gun deaths in Japan, as compared to 33,599 in the US. People have to undergo a strict exam and mental health tests in order to buy a gun - and even then, only shotguns and air rifles are allowed.
