Panels have already been installed on about 1.5m German balconies, where they are so popular the term Balkonkraftwerk (balcony power plant) has been coined.

Manufacturers say that installing a couple of 300-watt panels will give a saving of up to 30% on a typical household’s electricity bill. With an outlay of €400-800 and with no installation cost, the panels could pay for themselves within six years.

While some towns and regions have offered small financial incentives, the German boom has been fuelled by the rise in electricity costs after Russia invaded Ukraine and the ruling that neighbours have no right to object to balcony panels.

Although balcony power is only a fraction of its solar energy capacity, Germany remains far and away the European leader in solar installation.

A Republican congresswoman from Texas has not cast a vote in the US House since July while she has been living at a memory care facility – something she did not disclose to the public, according to a Dallas media outlet that figured out the reason for her prolonged absence.

Kay Granger, 81, has represented Texas’s 12th congressional district, which includes part of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, since 1997. And beginning in January 2023 she spent more than a year as the chairperson of the powerful House appropriations committee.

But months after announcing her plans to retire when her term ended in early 2025, Granger largely disappeared from the public eye. Her congressional website shows her last vote was on 24 July

The reporter, Carlos Turcios, eventually received a tip from a local resident that Granger had moved into an assisted living center specializing in memory care. After going to the facility in question to determine whether Granger indeed lived there, the assistant executive director confirmed, “This is her home,” according to a story that Turcios published on Friday in the Dallas Express.

The latest monthly bulletin from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said the pilot had planned to fly the two-seat microlight but, with a flat battery rendering the electric start inoperational, they decided to hand start the propeller, which is located at the back.

“The engine started but the aircraft accelerated away from the pilot and took off,” the report said of the incident on 3 October. “It was subsequently tracked by radar as it flew over the coast north of Newcastle and flew out to sea.”

The British-made Pegasus Quantum 15 is a lightweight recreational aircraft, with a hang glider-style wing, three wheels and an open cockpit.

Details of her wealth were revealed in declarations made to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), which is a requirement for those who hold public office and implies no suggestion of wrongdoing.

According to an NACC document published in local media, Paetongtarn declared 75 watches worth £3.8m, 217 handbags worth £1.8m, 23 vehicles worth £1.6m, 205 sets of earrings worth £1.2m and 67 necklaces worth £800,000.

But in the updated version, the crowns have been removed and replaced with a more prominent polar bear and ram than previously, to symbolise Greenland and the Faroe Islands respectively.

Belgium’s food agency has issued a surprising seasonal health warning: don’t eat your Christmas tree. “Christmas trees are not destined to enter the food chain,” it said in a statement.

The message on Tuesday came after the city of Ghent, an environmentalist stronghold in the country’s northern Flanders region, raised eyebrows by posting tips for recycling the conifers on the dinner table.

Seemingly taking the warning on board, the city tweaked its post – changing its headline from “Eat your Christmas tree” to read instead: “Scandinavians eat their Christmas trees.”
