French police foil counterfeiters passing off cheap plonk as classy Bordeaux

The main suspect is a winemaker and broker in the Médoc region near Bordeaux who was buying low-grade wine from other areas including Spain, then bottling it up as more expensive local produce, a statement from Bordeaux prosecutor’s office said.

“Major orders” had been placed for the wine “destined for supermarkets and foreign countries”, the statement added.

In 2016, police busted a Bordeaux vintner who was blending poor-quality wine with high-end Saint-Émilions, Lalande-de-Pomerols and Listrac-Médocs to sell to major supermarkets under prestigious labels.

The owner of several estates, François-Marie Marret, was given a prison sentence and a fine of €8m (£6.9m) after being convicted of bringing in cheap wine at night.

In 2010, 12 French winemakers and dealers were convicted of selling millions of bottles of fake pinot noir to the US firm E&J Gallo.

Before that, in 2006, legendary Beaujolais winemaker Georges Duboeuf was fined more than €30,000 for blending grapes from different vineyards to disguise the poor quality of certain prized vintages.

A major Japanese ramen chain is offering free noodles to young people ahead of Sunday’s upper house elections, amid widespread concern that the nation’s disaffected youth will not bother turning out to vote.

Ippudo, which operates 50 ramen shops across the country, is offering endless free noodle refills for a fortnight from election day on Sunday until 24 July, the Mainichi Shimbun said, provided they could show proof that they had voted.

The pods, intended to accommodate a classroom’s worth of people, are built from “military-grade steel specially heat-treated to resist not only all handguns and shotguns, but even semi-automatic weapons like AK-47 and AR-15 rifles”, according to the company.

The idea is that each classroom would have its own shelter, which locks from the inside with three bolts and a locking pin.

In October 2021, a man and a woman staying at the Atrio hotel and restaurant in Cáceres, south-west Spain, stole dozens of bottles of expensive French wine, including an 1806 Château D’Yquem, in a heist that made headlines around the world.

According to police, the couple left Spain a few days after the theft and moved around Europe so much that it was hard for officers to keep up.

They were eventually tracked down to the border between Montenegro and Croatia, and arrested in Croatia thanks to a joint police operation that included Interpol and Europol.

Last week, according to Russian media outlets, a chess-playing robot, apparently unsettled by the quick responses of a seven-year-old boy, unceremoniously grabbed and broke his finger during a match at the Moscow Open.

Video of the 19 July incident published by the Baza Telegram channel shows the boy’s finger being pinched by the robotic arm for several seconds before a woman followed by three men rush in, free him and usher him away.

Chinese rocket debris lands in Malaysia and Indonesia

A charred ring of metal about five metres in diameter was found on Sunday in Kalimantan, Indonesia, according to a Malaysian news outlet. Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said the metal appeared to be the exact size of the Chinese rocket’s core stage.

On Sunday, local media reports said two families were evacuated from their homes in Sarawak, Malaysia due to radioactivity concerns after a piece of debris suspected to be from the Tiangong rocket was found nearby.

The report showed a piece of metal wedged half a metre in the ground. Malaysia’s space agency and atomic energy licensing board were investigating the incident alongside local police.
