    Monkey business:

seven baby spider monkeys in backpack
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ol-baby-monkey

In a video posted on Facebook by the US’s Rio Grande valley sector border patrol, agents can be seen holding open a dark backpack with multiple holes. At the bottom of the backpack were seven baby spider monkeys huddled together.

The primates have distinct long limbs and tails akin to spider legs and live mostly off of fruits, leaves, nuts, seeds and sometimes insects.

Thursday’s incident follows a separate attempt last November where US authorities charged eight individuals, including a Cambodian wildlife official, with smuggling long-tailed macaques, another endangered monkey.

UK man bitten by cat contracts previously unknown and ‘extensive’ bacterial infection

A 48-year-old UK man bitten by a stray cat developed “painful” hand swelling and “extensive” infection caused by a previously unknown bacterium, a new study has revealed.

The research, published recently in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, describes the case of a 48-year-old obese man, who was admitted to the emergency department in 2020 with hand swelling, multiple puncture wounds and abrasions, about eight hours after sustaining bites from a feral cat.

Researchers, including those from Cambridge University Hospitals in the UK, discovered a novel species of the bacterium Globicatella that caused “extensive soft tissue infection” in the man bitten by the cat.

Previous research has shed light on the potential role of cats as reservoirs of yet-undiscovered pathogens and potential zoonotic infections that can jump from animals to humans as their long, sharp teeth can cause deep bite injuries.

While the man was treated for potential infection, administered a booster dose of the tetanus vaccine, given a number of oral antibiotics and discharged, he returned to the emergency department 24 hours later with an infection in his left little and right middle fingers.

‘Hank the Tank’ caught after home break-ins in Tahoe area
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...nk-tank-caught

Hank, who was initially misgendered as a male, was matched by DNA to more than 21 home break-ins and other instances of property damage in the Lake Tahoe region since 2022. She was “safely immobilized” by tranquilizer dart and apprehended Friday morning, according to state officials, and will now be moved to a sanctuary in southern Colorado.

Hank, technically known to the state as bear 64F, may now lose custody of her three cubs as they may be transferred to a facility in California’s Sonoma county “in hopes they can discontinue the negative behaviors”.

Before she was apprehended, authorities had tried sirens, de-activated tasers and beanbag rounds to deter the marauder. They described a bear that had “lost all fear of people” and was therefore “potentially dangerous”.

Where Eagles Dare - Khi đại bàng tấn công:

Texas woman attacked by snake and hawk – at the same time
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...attack-silsbee

The snake, which had been dropped by a hawk, wrapped itself around her arm – and was then promptly joined by the hawk, which was keen to retrieve its lunch, and began to attack Jones, the local community newspaper The Silsbee Bee reported.

All the while, the snake was striking her in the face, causing her eyeglasses to chip and spewing a liquid she assumes was venom, Jones recalled.

Jones said the hawk retreated and returned to its prey about four times, slapping her in the face with its wings.

Jones was immediately taken to the emergency room by her husband following the bizarre incident. She said the doctor asked her if she was on drugs after hearing her story.

Chắc là hình con rắn hay con lươn, không phải hình con giun đất đâu. Nó có dài thì cũng không có mập bề ngang cỡ đó.

Cái Đài tiếng nói lạ kỳ (Voice of Anomaly) này đâu có biết làm báo chuyên nghiệp. Trưng cái hình không rõ nguồn gốc từ đâu ra (còn bày đặt xài tiếng Anh mà viết sai chính tả).

France’s holidaymakers dump pets at roadside
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ts-at-roadside

More than 100,000 pets are abandoned to fend for themselves in France every year, more than half of them dumped just before or during long summer holidays when they are often found next to routes heading for the coast or countryside. Last summer, 60,000 pets were dumped, and animal rescuers say the figure is expected to be higher this year.

The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) raised the alarm last week, appealing for funds to help “saturated” refuges after it had accepted 12,000 animals since the beginning of summer.

Animal campaigners say refuges are facing a double whammy: inflation has hit families facing rocketing household, pet feed and veterinary bills and has also reduced the number of adoptions.

Spotless giraffe born at Tennessee zoo
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-tennessee-zoo

The female giraffe, born on 31 July, is a uniform brown color, lacking the distinctive patched pattern that giraffes – along with their exceptionally long necks – are known for. Brights zoo said the giraffe is already 6ft tall and is under the care of her mother and zoo staff.

The zoo believes the giraffe is one of a kind, given that giraffes are very rarely born without their mottled appearance, which primarily serves as a form of camouflage in the wild.

The zoo has announced a contest for the public to name the new giraffe. The shortlisted options are Kipekee, which means “unique” in Swahili; Firayali, which means unusual; Shakiri, which means “she is most beautiful”; and Jamella, which is “one of great beauty”.

    Let’s call her Freeraff.

fish traders anxious after Fukushima wastewater release
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...ewater-release

“That has only just started, and prices were already down at auction this morning,” says Haruko, a fish trader, as she sits in the shade with a carton of fruit juice while other workers hose down the concrete forecourt.

“That,” she indicates with the wave of a hand in the direction of the sea, is the start of the most controversial stage in the long, and fraught, task of decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after it was struck by a powerful earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, which caused three of its reactors to go into meltdown.

In images broadcast live online on Thursday, engineers behind computer screens opened valves to allow the first batch of 1.3m tonnes of wastewater from the plant to flow into the sea.

China’s decision to ban all Japanese seafood in response to the discharge added to fears among people in coastal communities near the stricken plant that pumping “contaminated” water into the sea will sound the death knell for the local fishing industry.
