The average American said they would stop buying eggs when prices hit $8 a dozen.
Illinois, a state which is about three-quarters farmland, is seeing the most dramatic jump in egg prices, increasing 1,048% from $0.42 to $4.82.
The research also found that the majority of Americans (61%) are eating fewer eggs due to rising costs, and 44% are seeing themselves using fewer eggs in their cooking and baking habits. It also found that more than two in five Americans (42%) have observed other shoppers “panic-buying” eggs.

Trump says he will help Afghans stuck in the UAE

WASHINGTON, July 20 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would help Afghans detained in the United Arab Emirates for years after fleeing their country when the United States pulled out and the Taliban took power.

Trump, a Republican who promised a far-reaching immigration crackdown, suspended refugee resettlement after he took office in January. In April, the Trump administration terminated temporary deportation protections for thousands of Afghans in the U.S.

"I will try to save them, starting right now," Trump said in a post on Truth Social that linked to an article on the Afghans held in limbo there.

Trump cited news website "Just the News" as saying that UAE officials were preparing to hand over some Afghan refugees to the Taliban. Reuters has not confirmed the report.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The UAE, a close security partner of the United States, agreed in 2021 to temporarily house several thousand Afghans evacuated from Kabul as the Taliban ousted the U.S.-backed government during the final stages of the U.S.-led withdrawal.

Nearly 200,000 Afghans were brought to the U.S. by former President Joe Biden's administration since the chaotic U.S. troop withdrawal from Kabul.

Canada agreed in 2022 to resettle about 1,000 of the Afghans still held in the UAE after a U.S. request. It is unclear how many remain in the Gulf country.

Some countries have forced Afghan refugees to return to Afghanistan. Nearly 2 million Afghans were returned from Iran and Pakistan in the past seven months, the United Nations said last week.

Germany on Friday deported 81 Afghan men to Afghanistan amid a tightening of refugee admissions. Some other European countries are pushing to tighten asylum rules in the bloc.

In the United States, Democrats have urged Trump to restore temporary protected status for Afghans, saying women and children could face particular harm under the Taliban-led government in place since 2021.

Refugees include family members of Afghan-American U.S. military personnel, children cleared to reunite with their parents, relatives of Afghans already admitted and tens of thousands of Afghans who worked for the U.S. government during the 20-year war.

Shawn VanDiver, president of the #AfghanEvac advocacy group, urged Trump to follow up on his post with action.

"President Trump has the authority to do the right thing. He should instruct DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and the Department of State to expedite processing, push for third-country partnerships, and ensure that we never again leave our wartime allies behind," he said in a statement.

UK to recognize Palestine state unless Israel stops Gaza war





The United Kingdom will recognize Palestinian statehood in September unless Israel takes significant steps to end the "appalling situation" in Gaza and meets other conditions, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday.

"Our goal remains a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state," Starmer said, according to a Downing Street statement.

He said that the UK government has always intended to recognize a Palestinian state "as a contribution to a proper peace process at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution," which he said is "now under threat."

"As part of this process towards peace, I can confirm that the UK will recognize the state of Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly in September, unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza," Starmer said.


What else did Starmer say?

The UK leader also called on Israel to "agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term, sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution."

This includes, Starmer continued, "allowing the UN to restart the supply of aid, and making clear there will be no annexations in the West Bank."

He also reiterated his government's stance on Hamas, the Iran-backed Palestinian militant group that governs the Gaza Strip.

"Our message to the terrorists of Hamas is unchanged and unequivocal. They must immediately release all the hostages, sign up to a ceasefire, disarm and accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza," Starmer said.

Canada "intends" to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday.

The announcement marks a dramatic policy shift by the Canadian government.

Carney justified the decision saying that it was necessary to preserve hopes of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

"Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025," Carney said.

It follows similar moves by France and the UK in recent days.

Carney said Canada's recognition is predicated on the Palestinian Authority "holding general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part, and to demilitarize the Palestinian state."

Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by Canada, along with the US, UK and the European Union.

Why Europe’s leaders came to Washington with Zelensky

Leaders of France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Union and NATO are all in Washington Monday to back up Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and to seek clarity on possible U.S. security guarantees.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said they will make clear to President Donald Trump that they want a peace deal, but one that is “in no way a capitulation” to Russia.

“We are not going only to accompany President Zelensky. We are also going to defend the interests of Europeans,” he said before the trip. The Europeans plan to tell Trump that any Ukrainian territorial concessions should be tied to giving Kyiv future protection and to see what the U.S. might provide.

The roster of European guests at the White House shows the level of alarm among Zelensky’s backers after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.

European leaders will balance between opposing U.S. attempts to push a quick deal, and averting the likes of the Oval Office showdown from Zelensky’s last visit. They hope to, again, bring Trump back onside after he told them after the meeting with Putin that the Russian leader wants Ukraine to cede land in exchange for stopping the war.

The Oakland police department said in a statement on Wednesday that on 15 October, just before 3.30am, individuals broke into the facility and stole hundreds of items from the collection. The missing pieces included artifacts such as Native American baskets, ivory carvings and daguerreotypes, as well as laptops.

Local officials are working with the FBI to investigate the burglary, which took place earlier this month at an off-site storage facility owned by the Oakland Museum of California.
