Ngưu tầm ngưu, musk tầm meloni:

German government rebukes Elon Musk over refugee rescue
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...scue-criticism

The owner of X, formerly Twitter, retweeted a video on Friday that showed refugees and aid workers on a boat. The rightwing account that first put the content on the social media platform used the post to praise the populist far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, which has taken a hard line on migration issues.

“Is the German public aware of this?” Musk wrote in his retweet.

The German federal foreign office replied to Musk directly on X, writing: “Yes. And it’s called saving lives.”

More than 65 refugees and migrants die in boat sinking off Yemeni coast

Rescue operations are ongoing to find dozens more missing, local authorities say.

At least 68 African refugees and migrants have died and 74 others remain missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Yemen, according to the United Nations migration agency.

Abdusattor Esoev, head of the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Yemen, told The Associated Press news agency on Sunday that the boat, with 154 Ethiopians aboard, capsized off Yemen’s province of Abyan.

Twelve people survived the shipwreck, he said, adding that the bodies of 54 refugees and migrants washed ashore in the district of Khanfar and 14 others were found dead at a different location and taken to a hospital morgue.

Yemeni health authorities earlier said that 54 people had died.

Abdul Qader Bajamil, director of the health office in Zanzibar, said that authorities were making arrangements to bury the victims near the city of Shaqra, while search opportunities continued amid difficult conditions.

The waterways between Yemen and the Horn of Africa are a common but perilous route for refugees and migrants travelling in both directions. The area saw a spike in Yemenis fleeing the country after the civil war broke out in 2014.

Houthi rebels and government forces reached a truce deal in April 2022 that has resulted in a decrease in violence and the slight easing of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

Meanwhile, some of those fleeing conflict in Africa, particularly in Somalia and Ethiopia, have sought refuge in Yemen or have sought to travel through the country to the more prosperous Gulf countries. The route remains one of the “busiest and most perilous” migration routes in the world, according to the IOM.

    Tỵ nạn lại gặp nạn:

Horrific death of a two-year-old puts immigration crackdown in spotlight
    https://www.theguardian.com/film/202...n-in-spotlight

Belgian documentary exposes the hidden infrastructure of state coercion that supports European migration policy, even down to the point of using reductive language such as “immigrant”.

It tells the horrific story of
the 2018 killing of Mawda Shawri, a two-year-old German-born Iraqi Kurd shot during a bungled border control raid on the van she was travelling in with her parents.

The infant’s body is dumped in a bin bag by the presiding officers, and her parents, Phrast and Shamden, refused access; the lies of the police, who played to the myth of immigrant barbarity by claiming Mawda had been thrown on to the highway by her fellow passengers; the justice system closing ranks by putting the onus of responsibility on the van driver for dangerous conduct that supposedly forced the police officer to fire.

Outrage is obviously the correct response. But, as someone points out here, concentrating on such egregious incidents plays into the authorities’ hands, because they are the outlying exceptions often then used to justify draconian control. They obscure the broader machinery of repression, and the underlying power ideologies, which license the empowered to pull the trigger.

Another commentator makes comparisons with the anthropology of hunting: the mythology that differentiates hunter and prey and sanctions bloodshed. Dismantling violence means dismantling language; replacing labels such as “migrant” or “refugee” leads another participant to realise that searching for alternative terms invariably humanises the people concerned.
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must the migrants sail
Before they get to the land?

    (Bob Di dân)
