The Indonesian capital is home to 42 million people, according to an estimate by the population division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in its World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 report published this month.

Jakarta is followed by the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka with 37 million people. With a population of 33 million, Tokyo – defined in the study as a megalopolis that includes three neighbouring prefectures – slipped to third place. That contrasts dramatically with the UN’s previous report in 2018, which placed the Japanese capital top with a population of 37 million.

The number of megacities – defined as those with at least 10 million inhabitants - has quadrupled from eight in 1975 to 33 in 2025.

Nine out of the 10 most populated cities – Jakarta, Dhaka, Tokyo, New Delhi, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Cairo, Manila, Kolkata and Seoul — are in Asia.

PM apologises over Hat Yai flood failures, pledges urgent aid

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has apologised for the state's failure to protect flood‑hit communities, vowing improvements as he prepared to revisit the devastated Hat Yai district in Songkhla for urgent assessments on Sunday.

Mr Anutin, who also serves as interior minister, will be accompanied by senior officials including Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Treasury Department director‑general Akkarut Sonthayanon, Office of Insurance Commission secretary‑general Chuchatr Pramoolpol and Thai Bankers' Association president Payong Srivanich.

He said the delegation will inspect the situation to prepare a comprehensive package of soft loans and financial assistance for flood‑affected residents. Direct observation is crucial to fully understand the scale of damage and accelerate the government's response, he said. Mr Anutin also held a meeting at Government House with Mr Ekniti, Prime Minister's Office Minister Paradorn Prissanananthakul and commerce permanent secretary Vuttikrai Leewiraphan to finalise urgent support measures.

The prime minister instructed the Interior Ministry to accelerate compilation of beneficiary lists for the 9,000‑baht household relief payment, which has been approved. Funds are expected to reach affected families next week.

Responding to reports claiming relief packages may reach 30,000 baht per household, Mr Anutin said assistance comes from multiple sources. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation will immediately provide 9,000 baht per household, while additional funding may cover home repairs of up to 45,000 baht depending on actual damages.

He also announced interest‑free recovery loans of up to 100,000 baht per person for six months, and another loan of up to 100,000 baht per household for property repairs, with a one‑year term.

Mr Anutin added that during his recent field visit he apologised to every resident he met for the government's inability to protect them from the disaster. Asked about the root causes of Hat Yai's severe flooding, he cited the geographical "basin" nature of Songkhla, especially Hat Yai district, which requires changes to road designs to improve drainage. He also mentioned the need for stricter evacuation alerts.
