Whale swims to freedom after efforts to save it
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ny-free-rescue
Nằm bâng khuâng nhớ biểnThe roughly 10-metre-long (33ft) sea mammal was first spotted on Monday stuck in shallow water off Niendorf near the northern city of Lübeck.
Then commenced days of intensive efforts to free the whale using boats to make waves and excavators to dig up sand, as fears grew for its life.
Rescue teams on Thursday began using earth-moving equipment on a pontoon to dredge a channel through the sand to give the animal a route to escape.
However, he cautioned against premature celebration and said the animal was “very ill” and had a long way to go before reaching “its real home, the Atlantic”.
The whale had been entangled in a fishing net, most of which rescuers managed to remove.

German robot lawnmowers kill hedgehogs?
https://www.theguardian.com/environm...tect-hedgehogs
Cắt đêm là giặc cắt ngày là dân.Recent studies have highlighted the threat lawnmower blades pose to wildlife active between dusk and dawn, prompting growing calls for regulation. Hedgehogs also tend to curl into a ball when threatened rather than running away, making them harder for a robot mower’s sensors to detect.
Hedgehogs have appeared on the “near threatened” red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature since 2024 after a drop in numbers of at least 30% over the previous decade.
Moreover, the majority of hedgehogs with cut injuries are found days or weeks after the accident happened and therefore have to endure considerable suffering, pain and harm,
Hedgehogs are subject to protection under German law, with trapping, injuring or killing of them subject to fines of up to €65,000 (£57,000).

250 dogs found at property
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...gs-property-uk
Con chó khóc đứng khóc ngồiAfter the RSPCA posted images of the property online showing dozens of the animals crammed into a living room space, members of the public accused the charity of generating the photos with AI tools. The animal welfare charity said it took in 87 dogs from the property at an undisclosed location in the UK and the remainder went to the Dogs Trust, another charity.
The property owners told RSPCA inspectors they had lost control of the breeding of the poodle-cross dogs and the situation quickly “got out of hand”.
Last year, the charity responded to 4,200 incidents that involved at least 10 animals at the same address across England and Wales. The charity said cases of large numbers of animals being kept at one address could be linked to mental health struggles, the cost of living crisis, or breeders operating with poor practices. RSPCA experts say initially well-meaning individuals often see situations get out of hand.

Gray whales in San Francisco Bay dying there at alarming rates
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...-francisco-bay
Bộ kills bằng ngựa, thủy kills bằng thuyền.A new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, has found that gray whales in the bay have been dying at alarming rates, largely due to collisions with vessels.
Eastern North Pacific (ENP) gray whales began to show up with more frequency in the well-trafficked maritime corridor around 2018. According to researchers, at least 18% of gray whales that entered the bay from 2018 to 2025 have died. They determined that for more than 40% of the whale carcasses, the cause of death was blunt force trauma consistent with vessel strikes, prompting calls for renewed efforts to help avoid more fatal collisions.
The true mortality rate for whales in the bay may be higher, hovering somewhere from 40% to 50%, Slaathaug said. It was difficult to match photographs of living whales to dead animals, due to skin decay or lost carcasses, she said.

Bear-suit insurance scam in California
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...insurance-scam
Three individuals in Los Angeles were sentenced to jail time for an insurance fraud scheme in which they staged attacks on high-end vehicles by having a person dress up in a bear costume – then pretending that person was an actual bear.
The plan unraveled after the four defendants in the case filed an insurance claim in 2024 claiming that the bear had damaged a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, going so far as to provide a video of the alleged attack inside the car parked at Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino mountains.
Investigators then discovered two additional claims of a person performing the same act in two more vehicles, each a Mercedes.
As part of the investigation, the state’s insurance department asked a California department of fish and wildlife biologist to review the videos. The scientist determined that “it was clearly a human in a bear suit”, a press release at the time stated.
