    Tin vịt: What the duck!

Merlin the duck meets president of Mexico
    https://www.theguardian.com/football...udia-sheinbaum

Merlin, the pet duck in a mini Mexico shirt who has become a viral sensation and an unofficial mascot of the World Cup, met Mexico’s president on Monday.

The duck waddled on to the stage at the start of Claudia Sheinbaum’s regular morning press conference, took a seat where ministers and officials are usually seen, and unfazed by the occasion, let out a few quacks.

Merlin’s fame *was ignited during street celebrations after the co-hosts beat South Africa 2-0 in the *opening game on 11 June, when the costumed duck was seen wandering among the crowd on the capital’s bustling Reforma avenue. Since then, Merlin has become one of the stars of the World Cup.

    Lucky duck.

Vietnam police rescue hundreds of cats stolen for meat
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...mal-crime-ring

More than 40 cats were reunited with their owners after the multiday operation last week, but several dozen of those rescued have died due to the harsh conditions in which they were found, the groups said. The operation was “a sobering reminder of the enormous scale of Vietnam’s cat meat trade,” Karanvir Kukreja, who leads a campaign against dog and cat meat consumption for the international nonprofit Humane World for Animals, said in a statement.

Officers discovered 45 cages containing about 400 live cats and four ice-filled foam containers holding about 80 dead cats, police said. Twenty-one cats were found alive at a separate location. With more than 500 cats seized, local media reported it as one of Vietnam’s largest cat welfare cases in recent years. Police said the suspects admitted to trapping and collecting cats across south Vietnam over the past three years.

Phuong Pham, the director of Humane World for Animals in Vietnam, said: “The sad truth about this trade is that thousands of cats every month are being stolen, trafficked and slaughtered for meat across the country. Thankfully, these survivors escaped.” She said several of the rescued cats were pregnant, leading to kittens being born in police custody this week.

    Fifa don’t give a duck:

    Fifa’s animal ban
    https://www.theguardian.com/football...xico-world-cup

Merlín the duck’s bid to see his beloved Mexico live has hit a snag after he was barred from El Tri’s match with Czechia on Wednesday.

A Fifa spokesperson confirmed Merlín was permitted to enter the perimeter but not the stadium, and did not offer further comment.

Merlín has yet to make a public comment on Fifa’s duck-related policies.

Although Merlín will not be cheering from the stands, Carla Gómez is convinced that he will bring luck to Mexico.

“Merlín is a lucky charm, and I know that, with him, the Mexican national team will win again today,” she said.

    Tasmanian 1,000kg elephant seal
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...-neil-to-death

Neil, a southern elephant seal, was born in Tasmania in October 2020, but his existence is an anomaly: most of his kind live thousands of kilometres south on the subantarctic Macquarie and Heard islands. Elephant seals return multiple times a year to the area where they were born to moult, breed.

Neil has returned to southern Tasmania 12 times so far. But his size this year, and his propensity to sleep in the middle of the road and attack bollards with his bulk has caused a stir. He could ultimately grow to be 3,500kg and about 4.5 metres long.

Dr Kris Carlyon, the section head for wildlife health at Tasmania’s department of natural resources, said while he understood the widespread interest in the mammal, there was a real risk of the public “essentially loving Neil to death”.

Carlyon urged the public to let Neil rest while he’s on land for about six weeks after a busy feeding period in the Southern Ocean. Some people have tried to leave meals for Neil, but he does not need food and won’t feed even if they try.

California firefighters give oxygen to suffering bird
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...a-firefighters

A crew in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Oakland spotted a pigeon “in distress” earlier this week after a vehicle fire, and jumped into action to assist.

“The crew reported the pigeon came up to them seeking help. The pigeon seemed to have suffered some smoke inhalation from the vehicle fire,” said Oakland Firefighters Local 55 union in a post on social media.

As captured in footage posted online, a firefighter administered oxygen with a mask placed over the small bird’s face as it stood in the road. It flew away after “clearing out its lungs”.

The moving footage was reminiscent of a recent incident in which firefighters in southern California rescued four cats from an apartment that had been damaged by fire. Three of the animals were not breathing, according to the Cal Fire/Riverside county fire department, and the crew and a local sheriff’s deputy used oxygen tanks and CPR to revive the animals. The cats all survived.

volunteers save fish from French rivers
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...er-levels-drop

The Loire, France’s longest river, is at a historical low, with the flow of some branches, including through the city of Orléans, reduced to a trickle between sandbanks. Two weeks ago, 16% of French rivers were reported to have dried up. A quarter of small streams were stagnant or had disappeared altogether, according to the national low water observatory. There has been little rain since.

The drop in river levels causes a rise in water temperature, which kills the aquatic vegetation. Other plants grow back, particularly filamentous algae, further reducing oxygen levels for the fish.

Along the Odet River in Brittany, fisher Mathieu Le Bouter and a dozen volunteers are catching hundreds of trout and young salmon – not for sport but to save them.

“The fish are under a great deal of stress. When you combine very high temperatures with low levels of dissolved oxygen, problems arise,” Le Bouter said.

Le Bouter says he and his volunteers will keep wading through the Odet and Isole for as long as necessary. “We seem to be the only ones who are concerned about the fish. Unlike birds, deer and foxes, which are more visible, they tend to get forgotten.”
