Dominion Voting Systems sues Giuliani for $1.3bn over baseless election claims
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...wsuit-election

The 107-page complaint, filed in federal court on Monday, accuses the former New York City mayor of having “manufactured and disseminated” a conspiracy theory related to the company’s voting machines.

“Dominion’s founder and employees have been harassed and received death threats, and Dominion has suffered unprecedented and irreparable harm,” the lawsuit states.

The company point to more than 50 statements by Giuliani about Dominion which it describes as defamatory. This includes remarks made at a 6 January rally in Washington before an insurrection on the US Capitol, appearances on Fox Business as well as social media posts.

Accused Capitol Rioter Apologizes For Threat To Assassinate Rep. Ocasio-Cortez
    https://www.yahoo.com/huffpost/garre...002142801.html

Garret Miller released a statement on Monday through his attorney claiming that he stormed the Capitol after becoming convinced by Donald Trump’selection fraud lies.

The 34-year-old Miller had previously tweeted “Assassinate AOC” and threatened a Capitol Police officer who fatally shot a fellow rioter.
“I am ashamed of my comments,” Miller’s statement read. “I was in Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021, because I believed I was following the instructions of former President Trump and he was my president and the commander-in-chief. His statements also had me believing the election was stolen from him.”

“Nevertheless, I fully recognize Joe Biden is now the President of the United States and that the election is over. Donald Trump is no longer president and I would not have any reason to continue to follow his lead.”

As for his threats against the officer and the New York lawmaker, Miller said: “While I never intended to harm Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez nor harm any members of the Capitol police force, I recognize that my social media posts were completely inappropriate.”

“I want to publicly apologize to Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and the Capitol police officers. I have always supported law enforcement and I am ashamed by my comments,” he added.

Tim Táo quân tố khổ Núi đường Mặt sách

Apple CEO Tim Cook calls out Facebook amid widening rift

Tim Cook called out "rampant disinformation" on social media platforms and their collection of users' personal data. Apple's planned privacy settings put it on a collision course with ad-reliant platforms like Facebook.

Apple plans to launch a new privacy feature in March/April to enable users to block data collection

Tim Cook, the chief executive of Apple, took potshots at Facebook and other social media companies on Thursday, when he criticized their approach on disinformation and privacy on social media platforms.

"At a moment of rampant disinformation and conspiracy theories juiced by algorithms, we can no longer turn a blind eye to a theory of technology that says all engagement is good engagement — the longer the better — and all with the goal of collecting as much data as possible," said Cook, a speaker at Thursday's virtually-held Computers, Privacy and Data Protection conference.

Apple CEO Tim Cook called out rampant disinformation on social media apps

"It is long past time to stop pretending that this approach doesn’t come with a cost — of polarization, of lost trust and, yes, of violence," he said. "Technology does not need vast troves of personal data, stitched together across dozens of websites and apps, in order to succeed. Advertising existed and thrived for decades without it."

    Apple at loggerheads with Facebook

Cook's comments come at a time when Apple is planning to implement privacy settings that will make it considerably easier for users to decline to have their data tracked to enable targeted advertisements.

This practice can already be disabled on Apple devices, but only if a user actively seeks out the option in the depths of their settings. In future on the iOS14 operating system, everyone will be offered the chance to refuse when setting up their device.

If users refuse, then it would restrict tools that collect data to target advertisements. The feature was set to be implemented in September, but Apple said it would hold off until late March or April, to allow apps to adjust to the new feature.

Facebook, meanwhile, has been questioning Apple's decision to make the change. Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, said on Wednesday that Apple has "every incentive" to change its policies to further "anti-competitive practices," as Apple has a catalog of paid apps and a digital advertising platform of its own.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes Apple's move is an 'anti-competitive practice'.

Apple's preferred search engine Google had been far less outspoken on the issue. Athough, in a blog post on Wednesday aimed at its partners and advertisers, it warned that "app publishers may see a significant impact to their Google ad revenue on iOS after Apple's ATT policies take effect." Google is making changes to its apps to prevent them from being affected by Apple's changes and it encouraged partner companies to update to retain compatibility with Apple devices.

Canadian government classifies Proud Boys as terrorist group

The government said the group was a "neo-fascist" organization and "engages in political violence." It said that the group was on domestic intelligence's radar owing to "not just rhetoric but activity and planning."

The new terminology means the Proud Boys may have assets seized and face harsher terrorism-related criminal penalties in Canada

Canada on Wednesday deemed the far right Proud Boys group a terrorist organization, saying it had become a "serious and growing threat" to society.

The group has faced increased scrutiny in recent weeks following its pivotal role in the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6 and now the Canadian government has responded, designating the Proud Boys as a terror network.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said that the decision was reached in light of intelligence forces being increasingly concerned about the group's activites.

"There has been a serious and concerning escalation of violence — not just rhetoric but activity and planning — and that is why we have responded as we have today," Blair told a news conference.

The group's regular appearances as counter-protesters at events such as Black Lives Matter protesters, and their willingness to use violence against rival demonstrators, was another reason cited.

Events at the Capitol prompted the move

Senior officials said authorities had been monitoring and collecting evidence about the Proud Boys prior to the Capitol Hill insurrection, but confirmed that the events provided information that helped with the decision.

Public Safety Minister Blair said the group's "intent and their escalation toward violence became quite clear," following the attack in Washington last month.

Enrique Tarrio, the chairman of Proud Boys, called the terrorist designation "ridiculous."

"There is no basis for it. It's infringement of free speech rights. All the Canadian Proud Boys have ever done is go to rallies,'' Tarrio said.

"They used what happened at the Capitol to push for this," added Tarrio, who was arrested in Washington two days before the events took place at the US government building, His detention came after he was accused of vandalizing a Black Lives Matter banner during an earlier protest.

    What does it mean?

Better known for its activity in the US, the Proud Boys was founded by a Canadian, Gavin McInnes, who resides in the States.

The new designation means the Proud Boys may have assets seized and face stiffer terrorism-related punishments.

A government official said if someone was a member of the organization, that did not necessarily mean they would be charged with a crime, but if they were to engage in violence, they could be charged with committing a terrorist act.

Donating money to the organization or buying Proud Boys paraphernalia would also be deemed a crime.

New US administration reviewing domestic extremism

By September 2020 at the latest, the Proud Boys gained prominence during one of the televised US presidential debates between Joe Biden and then president Donald Trump. One of the questions posed to Trump asked whether he would disavow white supremacists and the Proud Boys group in particular. Trump instead called on the group to "stand back and stand by."

Canada is the first country to designate the Proud Boys as a terrorist entity. Asked whether the US would follow suit, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said a domestic extremism review was underway but added, "we will wait for that review to conclude before we make any determinations."

    Đem con bỏ bên Mexico:

US citizen newborns sent to Mexico under Trump-era border ban
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...men-border-ban

At least 11 migrant women were dropped off in Mexican border towns without birth certificates for their days-old US citizen newborns since March of last year, an investigation by the Fuller Project and the Guardian has found.

Advocates suspect the actual number of such cases could be higher because the vast majority of these fast-track “expulsions”, as the administration calls them, have occurred away from the public eye and without the involvement of lawyers.

This recent pattern of removal of US citizens without birth certificates has occurred against the backdrop of immigration policies and practices in recent years that have harmed already vulnerable women and children, advocates and lawyers say.

Hélène*, a 23-year-old woman from Haiti, was nine months pregnant when she crossed into the United States in July 2020. She was in the custody of the US border patrol when her water broke. Agency officials transported her to a local hospital in Chula Vista, California, to give birth. She was happy when her baby girl was born – that everything went smoothly, she told the Fuller Project and the Guardian in a phone conversation through a translator.

Three days later, they were discharged. Hélène remembers thinking that she would be released to family and allowed to pursue her asylum case, she said. But 25 or so minutes later, she was back in Mexico, at the very border she arrived at a few days ago, pregnant at the height of summer, after a journey that lasted one month and three days. Panicking, she began to cry. She pleaded in Spanish to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers who had driven her across the border. She knew they understood, she says. The officers did not respond.

They dropped her off across from the San Diego-Tijuana border, on the side of the road. She had no idea what to do or where to go.

She also didn’t have her newborn’s birth certificate. When night fell, she and her baby slept right there on the street, on the other side of safety.

Hélène was subject to Title 42, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention order issued during the beginning of the government’s federal actions against the Covid-19 pandemic last March. The rule allowed CBP officials to summarily “expel” all migrants who entered the US without authorization, instead of letting them access the legal avenue to request protection, even those seeking asylum.

Fast deportations have happened before at the border but typically immigrants have had the right to be screened for asylum claims and to see an immigration judge if they are likely to face harm upon removal. Title 42 allows authorities to turn away people summarily.

However, officials can exempt people on a case-by-case basis and grant entry in case of humanitarian or public interest considerations.

“Immigration [agencies have] the authority to be able to prevent that from happening but they’re refusing to do that,” said Luis M Gonzalez, a lawyer with the Jewish Family Services, who has represented two cases in which migrant mothers and their US citizen newborns were expelled. “They are placing [the] lives of US citizens in danger. In this case, newborns.”

In a statement Tuesday, Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, called it “troubling” that Biden’s orders “did not include immediate action to rescind and unwind more of the unlawful and inhumane policies that this administration inherited – and now owns”.

CBP also told a local reporter last year that at least one new mother from Honduras was given the option to give her baby up to US child services before returning to Mexico.

    Texit: Xuất chúng quốc

Texas Republicans endorse legislation to allow vote on secession from US
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...vote-secession

“Texit,” named after the British referendum to leave the European Union, refers to the process of Texas exiting the United States to become an independent, self-governing nation.

The endorsement drew intense backlash from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Many took aim directly at Allen as party chair, continuing a slew of criticism that has been levied at him since first he took on the role in July.

Back then, Allen was immediately criticized for changing the political organization’s slogan to “We are the Storm,” in what the New York Times called an “unusually visible example of the Republican party’s dalliance with QAnon”, the conspiracy theory.

This week’s endorsement also is not the first time the former Florida congressman has promoted secession.

Earlier he insisted that “law-abiding states should bond together and form a Union of states that will abide by the constitution”, following a US supreme court ruling to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election.

    Better late than never:

Anthony Brindisi concedes loss to Claudia Tenney in NY-22 House race
    https://www.wamc.org/post/brindisi-c...22-race-tenney

On Friday, a state judge ruled that Tenney won the race by 109 votes in the nation’s last undecided congressional race.

Brindisi – who ousted Tenney from the seat in 2018 – said Friday on Twitter that a full audit and hand recount was the only way to resolve the race that involved ballot challenges and a series of problems with vote tabulations. He faulted the Oneida County Board of Elections on Monday and said it may never be clear how many legal votes weren’t counted.

TJ Ducklo: White House suspends aide for 'threatening reporter'

EPA- TJ Ducklo is President Biden's deputy press secretary

A White House spokesman has been suspended for a week without pay after allegedly threatening to "destroy" a female reporter who was asking questions about his private life.

TJ Ducklo reportedly threatened Politico reporter Tara Palmeri, who was investigating his relationship with another journalist.

White House press secretary Jen Pskai said on Friday that Mr Ducklo had apologised to Ms Palmeri.

    He has not commented independently.

Some observers have criticised President Joe Biden for failing to take stronger action. He has previously said he would fire "on the spot" any staff speaking disrespectfully to colleagues.

The suspension of Mr Ducklo, the White House deputy press secretary, came after Vanity Fair magazine reported on his alleged threats to Ms Palmeri.

The Politico reporter had been investigating Mr Ducklo's relationship with Alexi McCammond, a journalist with Axios who had covered Mr Biden's election campaign.

He allegedly rang her and said: "I will destroy you". He also made other derogatory and misogynistic comments, Vanity Fair reports.

President Biden's spokeswoman tweeted on Friday that TJ Ducklo was "the first to acknowledge this is not the standard of behavior set out by the President".

She said that as well as being suspended without pay for a week, Mr Ducklo would no longer work with Politico reporters when he returned to the White House.

President Biden told his staff on his first day in office that he would not tolerate bullying behaviour.

"I'm not joking when I say this: If you ever work with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I will fire you on the spot. No ifs, ands or buts," he said.

Some commentators, such as CNN anchor Jake Tapper, are now asking whether the same punishment should not apply to the way his staff treat journalists doing their job.

"Duck lo" có nghĩa là núp xuống thấp. Trong văn phòng lúc nào xếp nóng máu thì nhân viên lấm lét báo động "duck low" hay "keep your head down" đặng an toàn.
