Rome residents impose curfew after spate of wild boar attacks
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...d-boar-attacks

Residents in several neighbourhoods in northern Rome have imposed a nightly “curfew” after a spate of attacks by wild boar, which for years have roamed the Italian capital.

In the most recent encounter, a woman said a boar “was on top of my head” after she was pushed to the ground during an attack on Sunday night. The incident prompted exasperated residents of Balduina and six other districts to impose an 8.30pm curfew.

The latest victim was Marta Santangelo, a psychotherapist, who was attacked by a boar beside a bin while walking her dog. “It was just before 11pm … I was carrying a bag of rubbish and by the bin I noticed boar cubs. The mother was fixating on me. I understood that maybe she was scared and so picked up my dog and ran for cover.”

    Roaming in Rome:

Picnics banned in Rome in effort to combat wild boar incursions
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...oar-incursions

Picnics have been banned and bins fenced off in a large swathe of northern Rome as health authorities move to contain the wild boar population after African swine fever was detected in a deceased animal.

Feeding or approaching the animals has also been forbidden, while people who have walked through farmland or nature reserves in the affected areas have been told to disinfect their shoes.

The affected anti-boar “red zones” in Rome are located in the north and north-west of the Italian capital, including an area close to Vatican City.

About 23,000 wild boar live in and around Rome, according to estimates from Coldiretti, the farmers’ association. The animals are often seen in parks, walking down the road or searching for food in overflowing rubbish bins, mostly in districts in the north of the city.

Trời sanh voi, trời sanh court:

Court mulls if elephant has human rights
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...s-human-rights

That question was before New York’s highest court on Wednesday in a closely watched case over whether a basic human right can be extended to an animal.

The advocates at the Nonhuman Rights Project say yes: Happy is an autonomous, cognitively complex elephant worthy of the right reserved in law for “a person”.

Happy has lived at the Bronx Zoo for 45 years. The state court of appeals heard arguments over whether she should be released through a habeas corpus proceeding, which is a way for people to challenge illegal confinement.

The Nonhuman Rights Project wants her moved from a “one-acre prison” at the zoo to a more spacious sanctuary.

“She has an interest in exercising her choices and deciding who she wants to be with, and where to go, and what to do, and what to eat,” project attorney Monica Miller told the Associated Press ahead of the oral arguments. “And the zoo is prohibiting her from making any of those choices herself.”

Happy was born in the wild in Asia in the early 1970s, captured and brought as a one-year-old to the US, where she was eventually named for one of the characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Happy now lives in an enclosure adjacent to the zoo’s other elephant, Patty. The zoo’s attorney argued in court filings that Happy can swim, forage and engage in other behavior natural for elephants.

Lower courts have ruled against the NRP. And the group has failed to prevail in similar cases, including those involving a chimpanzee in upstate New York named Tommy.

Nắng tốt dưa, với tốt rắn luôn:

Rattlesnakes thrive in California amid increasingly hot temperatures
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...r-temperatures

Many species are suffering at the hands of a warmer world, but one California inhabitant seems to be enjoying hotter temperatures: the Pacific rattlesnake. Their populations across the south-west are thriving, according to a study by researchers at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of Michigan.

Being warm brings with it certain benefits: the snakes can spend more time out of hibernation, more time growing, and more time reproducing. They typically hibernate from September to May, but this could shorten in the future. Even on a given day, the snakes could have more active hours as the temperatures rise.

Rattlesnakes are some of the most hearty creatures around, she says: “They have a pretty wide thermal tolerance, a super low metabolism, only eat a half-dozen meals per year,” she says. “So they are pretty content just hanging out, as long as it’s not too hot or too cold.”

    Thả hổ về chuồng:

    Odesa big cat rescue
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...escue-unfolded

The lion rescuers met at midnight in the carpark of a hotel in the Romanian city of Suceava, 50km from the Ukraine border.
Their destination was a zoo in the port city of Odesa, an eight-hour drive through the war-torn country, where nine lions were rapidly running out of food.

Ukraine is home to a large number of exotic animals held in private zoos or as amusements in hotels and tourist venues. The Russian invasion prompted an influx of animal rights organisations determined to rescue animals that had been left behind.

The city of Târgu Mureș agreed to host the lions until 1 September, by which time De Lange hopes to have secured them a permanent home in a sanctuary in the US.

The rescue was funded by Animals Australia, which raised money to cover vehicle hire. It is the second lion rescue the organisation has funded since the war began on 24 February.
