'Food nationalism'

The conflict continues to have far-reaching consequences.

The world faces the worst food crisis in decades following the invasion, the UN has warned. In Asia, an agriculture expert highlighted concerns about the potential rise of "food nationalism".

India has banned wheat exports, Indonesia has blocked overseas sales of palm oil and now Malaysia says it will cut the export of chickens from the start of June because of shortages locally.

"The government's priority is our own people," Malaysia's Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

Sonia Akter, an assistant professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore, said "food nationalism" was the result of governments feeling that they have to "protect their citizens first and foremost".

"From the previous experience of the 2007-2008 food crisis, it is expected that more and more countries will follow suit, which will exacerbate the crisis as well as the food price inflation," she added.

The prime minister faced a barrage of criticism after he amended the rules on Friday to make clear that ministers will not always be expected to resign for breaching the code of conduct. Under new sanctions, they could apologise or temporarily lose their pay instead.

Johnson also blocked his independent ethics chief, Christopher Geidt, from gaining the power to launch his own investigations, and rewrote the foreword to the ministerial code, removing all references to honesty, integrity, transparency and accountability.

It comes as the PM faces an inquiry by the privileges committee into whether he misled parliament over lockdown parties in Downing Street – which could itself be a breach of the ministerial code.

Once described as “the empress of terror”, Fusako Shigenobu founded the Japanese Red Army, a radical leftist group that carried out armed attacks worldwide in support of the Palestinian cause.

She is believed to have masterminded the 1972 machine gun and grenade attack on Tel Aviv’s Lod airport, which left 26 people dead and injured about 80.

Shigenobu had lived as a fugitive in the Middle East for around 30 years but was arrested in Osaka in November 2000 after secretly returning to Japan using a false passport and checking into a hotel disguised as a man.

On Tuesday, queues formed outside popular food stalls as the public rushed to buy dishes before the ban was imposed, while local media reported that some supermarkets and wet markets had sold out of chicken.

Daniel Tan, the owner of a chain of seven stalls called OK Chicken Rice, told Reuters that Malaysia’s ban would be “catastrophic” for vendors.

“The ban would mean we are no longer able to sell. It’s like McDonald’s with no burgers,” he said.

His stalls rely on supplies from Malaysia, which mostly exports chickens live to Singapore, where they are slaughtered. Tan said he would have to switch to using frozen chicken within the week and feared a “strong hit to sales” as a result.

Some vendors have said they will stop selling chicken altogether and instead find alternative dishes – bad news for fans of Singapore’s much-loved dish of poached chicken, served with rice cooked in stock, and chilli dip.

The owner of the popular eatery Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice told the Singaporean outlet The Straits Times that it would stop serving chicken dishes if it could not get fresh supplies. Its founder, Foo Kui Lian, said they would instead “bring back dishes like fried tofu, fried pork chop and prawn salad, but we will not use frozen chicken”.

Saturday is the anniversary of Chinese troops opening fire to end student-led unrest in and around the square in central Beijing. China has never provided a full death toll from the events of 4 June 1989, but rights groups and witnesses say the figure could run into thousands.

China bans any public commemoration of the event on the mainland, making Taiwan the only part of the Chinese-speaking world where it can be remembered openly.

“It’s a symbol of how democracy is precious and fragile at the same time, and how people who care about democracy need to stand up for it or else authoritarians everywhere will think people don’t care,” said the author Jeremy Chiang, 27, who attend the event in Taipei’s Liberty Square.

Activists assembled a new version of the Pillar of Shame, a statue commemorating Tiananmen protesters that a leading Hong Kong university removed from its campus, where it had stood for more than two decades, in December.
