The shops, which could open as soon as the autumn, will sell imported goods that may become hard to find in ordinary Russian shops as foreign brands flee the country over the war in Ukraine.

But in order to make a purchase, visitors will have to provide an official document to prove they are a foreign diplomat, employee of an international organisation or a family member. And the shops will also accept payment in dollars and euro, mimicking the beryozka stores’ function as a magnet for foreign currency.

French mayor to ask Mont Blanc climbers for €15,000 rescue and funeral deposit

Climbers attempting to reach the summit of Mont Blanc from a popular path in France will have to pay a €15,000 (£12,640) deposit to cover costs in case they need to be rescued, or worse, die.

Jean-Marc Peillex, the mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, from where climbers can make it to the top of the highest peak in Europe via the Goûter Route, imposed the measure in response to dozens defying warnings and engaging in what he described as “a game of Russian roulette”.

The finer detail specifies that €10,000 would cover the cost of a rescue and €5,000 a funeral.

Man jailed in Spain after selling off 7,000 hams he stole from work

A man in Huelva in southern Spain has been jailed for defrauding his employers out of €520,000 (£439,000) after he stole and resold 7,000 hams.

The man, who has not been named, stole the jamón from the curing warehouse where he worked over a period of six years from 2007 to 2013. Although he faced a six-year sentence, it was reduced to 11 months and 29 days because the case took so long to come to trial.

The man was in charge of taking delivery of the jamones and was responsible for them throughout the entire curing process. He then sold them on, using a messenger service to deliver them to his customers.

Pro-Trump brand fined for using fake ‘Made in USA’ labels

The Utah-based apparel company Lions Not Sheep was first cited by the FTC in May for replacing “Made in China” tags on their clothing with bogus “Made in USA” labels.

The company and its owner, Sean Whalen, were ordered to pay $212,335 in fines and stop producing apparel with the fake tags, according to a statement from the FTC.

“Stop making bogus Made in USA claims, and come clean about foreign production,” read the FTC’s 28 July statement.

It took firefighters eight hours to free the man, who was buried six metres down after part of a road collapsed on Via Innocenzo XI, close to the Vatican.

Emergency services were alerted after receiving a call from one of four alleged gang members who had managed to escape from the collapsed tunnel on Thursday morning.

The man, who was given liquid food and an oxygen cylinder to help him breathe, was eventually pulled out alive to prolonged applause from a large crowd who had gathered to watch.

Leaked video of Sanna Marin dancing exuberantly has sparked controversy in Finland, with critics of the 36-year-old prime minister accusing her of inappropriate behaviour and supporters praising her style and defending her right to party.

The video, first published by the tabloid Iltalehti and compiled from several since-deleted Instagram clips, shows Finland’s youngest ever leader dancing enthusiastically and drinking with friends, apparently in a private apartment.

Marin, who was the world’s youngest prime minister in 2019, has won widespread praise for her handling of the Covid pandemic, in which Finland fared better than most EU member states, and of the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Ross family of Mt Maunganui were more than a little surprised to find the New Zealand fur seal in their home, which is about 150m from the shore, on Wednesday morning.

Jenn woke their two children, Noah, 12, and Ari, 10, to come and see “their new pet”.

The seal, which the family nicknamed “Oscar” in a long tradition of giving seals that name in the community, proved to be polite company, Ross said, and thankfully had not defecated inside. “I think that would have been pretty terminal for the furniture.”

A Department of Conservation ranger turned up at 10am to take the seal back to the sea, after a busy morning of seal-related call-outs.

Marin, 36, told reporters she was tested on Friday and the results would be available in a week’s time. She said she had never taken drugs, “not even in my teenage years”, and had taken the test “for my own legal protection and to clear up any doubts”.

The authoritative daily Helsingin Sanomat said in an editorial on Friday that prime ministers were entitled to relax, there was no evidence Marin had broken the law, and that experts it had consulted concluded there was no risk to national security.
