The NMS had forecast thunderstorms and wind gusts in the capital, Budapest, which prompted the cancellation of Saturday’s fireworks. However, the storms missed the capital.

The NMS agency apologised on Sunday, citing “a factor of uncertainty inherent in the profession”.

The fireworks display along the banks of the Danube was billed as “the biggest in Europe” to celebrate “Hungary’s millennial state” on St Stephen’s Day but has proved contentious in some quarters, meaning the forecast has become something of a political lightning rod.

Researchers at Michigan State University have made a composite resin for the blades by combining glass fibres with a plant-derived polymer and a synthetic one.

Once the blades have reached the end of their lifespan the materials can be broken down and recycled to make new products including turbine blades – and chewy sweets.

To combat the waste, researchers designed a new form of resin. Digesting the resin in an alkaline solution produced potassium lactate, which can be purified and made into sweets and sports drinks.

Mealworms, the larval form of the yellow mealworm beetle, have been cooked with sugar by researchers who found that the result is a meat-like flavoring that could one day be used on convenience food as a source of protein.

Different cooking processes produced different results, the researchers found. Steamed mealworms give off a sort of sweetcorn-like aroma, while roasted and deep-fried versions have more of a similarity with shrimp. A panels of volunteers were used in sniff tests to ascertain the most meat-like favors of those concocted.

It is ambergris, a form of whale dung, exceedingly rare and valuable, sought after by perfumers and gathered by secretive harvesters among the flotsam of New Zealand’s stormy coastlines.

“Nothing else really smells like ambergris, except sperm whales,” says Kane Fleury, a curator at Otago Museum. He knows that smell well; the museum sometimes works with the Department of Conservation to examine whale remains or assist when they beach. “

There’s this sweet sort of odour associated with them,” he says, “a real nasal-filling marine mammal essence, fatty and odorous and quite heady, the smell of a whale.”

When mature, ambergris is valued by perfumers for its properties as a fixative, as well as its own fragrance, which can range from deep, faecal animal musk, to a sweeter dark caramel, or light and powdery in the higher grades.

Higher-quality ambergris is worth more than $27 a gram. Because it can occur in huge chunks, fishers have over the years reported finds worth as much as £1.5m.

Nebraska man paddles 38 miles in hollowed out pumpkin

A Nebraska man has set a new world record after he paddled 38 miles down a river in a huge, hollowed-out pumpkin, officials have said.

Duane Hansen of Syracuse, Nebraska, completed his journey last week, according to a Facebook post from the city of Bellevue on Saturday.

Hansen asked city officials to bear witness to the feat so that it would be recognized by Guinness World Records.

The organization has not yet validated the results, according to the Washington Post, but it confirmed it would beat the current record for “longest journey by pumpkin boat” currently held by Rick Swenson, who traveled 25.5 miles (41.038 km) in Grand Forks, North Dakota, in 2016.
