Woman trapped upside-down between boulders for seven hours after trying to retrieve phone in Hunter Valley



A woman has spent seven hours hanging upside-down by her feet before she could be rescued when she fell head-first into a deep crevice between two boulders in regional NSW.

NSW Ambulance rescue paramedics had to move the boulders using a specialist winch to reach the woman, who had been trying to retrieve her dropped phone, before facing the tricky task of “navigating” her out from her precarious position.

“In my 10 years as a rescue paramedic, I had never encountered a job quite like this,” specialist rescue paramedic Peter Watts said.

“It was challenging but incredibly rewarding.”

The woman, aged in her 20s, was walking with friends when her phone fell into the 3m-deep crevice in the Hunter Valley on October 12.

She leant down trying to retrieve it and fell head-first into the crevice — where she ended up hanging upside-down by her feet.

Her friends tried in vain for some time to free her before hiking out to find phone reception to call triple-0 for help.

By this stage, NSW Ambulance said, the poor woman had already been literally stuck “between a rock and a hard place” for more than an hour.

NSW Ambulance said a “multi-disciplinary team” was sent in and had to remove several heavy boulders, using a specialised winch to move one 500kg boulder, to create a safe access point to reach the woman.

A hardwood frame was built to ensure stability of the area — and the woman — while the rescuers worked.

After removing the boulders and “with both feet now accessible”, the team then faced the challenge of “navigating the patient out through a tight S-bend”.

That process alone also took an hour.

In total, the woman spent seven hours hanging upside-down before she was freed — with only minor scratches and bruises but still without her phone, which could not be retrieved.

NSW Ambulance hailed the achievements of the rescue team in safely extracting the woman from her precarious predicament.

“Every agency had a role, and we all worked incredibly well together to achieve a good outcome for the patient,” Watts said.

PM Anthony Albanese received multiple flight upgrades from Qantas under former boss Alan Joyce, according to new book
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reportedly been given flight upgrades for at least a decade, with Qantas insiders claiming he would "directly liaise" with the airline's former boss Alan Joyce.

Nearly all federal MPs can get upgrades from Qantas, as they are granted membership to the exclusive Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, which is also reserved for the likes of CEOS and board directors of major companies, court judges and high-profile TV stars.

The upgrades are granted according to availability on flights and politicians do not know if they will be granted ahead of time.

However, according to excerpts from a book published on Saturday in The Sydney Morning Herald's Good Weekend, Mr Albanese liaised directly with Mr Joyce to arrange upgrades, which meant he was able to issue the PM with a guaranteed upgrade.

The travel occurred before Mr Albanese became Australia's leader.

It was during his time as transport minister under the Rudd government and then as shadow transport minister, which is the portfolio that relates to the Flying Kangaroo.

One of the first known instances was in July 2009 when the PM received an upgrade to business class on a personal return Qantas flight from Sydney to Los Angeles.

Just nine months later, his son Nathan was given a "ticket upgrade" with Emirates for a return flight from Sydney to Rome, prior to its codeshare partnership with Qantas.

Mr Albanese also "accepted upgrades from Emirates travelling unofficially to and from Europe" in July 2011 while still transport minister, it is also claimed.

In a private trip to Hawaii just before the New Year in 2012, the PM was upgraded to business class for the journey between the Harbour City and Honolulu.

After Kevin Rudd lost the federal election to Tony Abbott in 2013, Mr Albanese continued to receive benefits by being bumped up to business class on 10 "privately funded" Qantas and Virgin flights over two months that year across Australia.

Two overseas flights to London and Honolulu were also upgraded in 2016 and 2019.

The benefits would have totalled well into the tens of thousands of dollars.

"According to Qantas insiders, Albanese would liaise with Joyce directly about his personal travel," part of the Good Weekend story stated.

Hồi 1988, 89 có phim Rainman (Dustin Hoffman) về một người autistic, có thể nhớ nhiều chi tiết đã đọc được, khi mua vé máy bay ở Mỹ cũng đòi đi hãng Qantas vì nó không bị trễ và không bij tai nạn. Bây giờ có làm lại phim Rainman chắc nhân vật chính sẽ không chịu đi máy bay, nhất là không muốn leo lên máy bay Boeing (hay bị booing).
