The US bombardment of Venezuela and the capture of its president, Nicolás Maduro, has renewed fears of an American takeover of Greenland, as members of Trump’s Maga movement gleefully set their sights on the Danish territory after the attack in South America.

In response to a constant drumbeat of threats against the territory, the Danish defence intelligence service last month labelled the US a security risk in a dramatic change in transatlantic relations.

Jennifer Kavanagh, the director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, a thinktank that advocates restraint in US foreign policy, said she had long dismissed Trump’s sabre-rattling toward Greenland. “Now I’m not so sure,” she said. “It wouldn’t be that hard for the US to put a couple hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it’s not clear to me who could do anything about it.”

In September, Ford ceremoniously dumped a bottle of Crown Royal when Diageo announced plans to shutter its plant in Ontario and move its operations to the US, with the loss of roughly 200 jobs.

For political leaders, the loss of a Crown Royal facility reflects an erosion of a product long seen as uniquely Canadian.

The whisky, first introduced 86 years ago to mark a visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, has in domestic and international advertising long stressed its Canadian roots. Sold in a distinct purple cloth bag with gold stitching, the drink is made with Canadian grains and water from Manitoba’s Lake Winnipeg. While it was initially only available in Canada, a decision to sell it south of the border in the 1960s has made it the top-selling Canadian whisky in the US.

Ford told reporters the company has bigger plans to move all its Crown Royal production to a new plant in Alabama.

“It’s all a bunch of BS. It’s all going to Alabama. Mark my words, it’s going to Alabama. They said they were going to invest in [Ontario] … They pulled the carpet out from underneath us,” Ford said in a nod to plans the company had for a new C$245m carbon-neutral Crown Royal distillery that would employ up to 100 people.

US attempt to seize Russian-flagged Marinera

The United States is attempting to seize a Russian-flagged oil tanker linked to Venezuela after a two-week pursuit across the Atlantic, the Reuters news agency reported.

US officials say the operation, near Iceland, involves the Coast Guard and the military and Russian warships, including a submarine, are also in the area.

US forces have boarded the tanker, an official told The Associated Press.

The tanker, now called the Marinera, previously sailed under another name and evaded a US maritime blockade. It’s the latest target in Washington’s campaign against Venezuela’s sanctioned oil shipments.

What we know about the oil tanker

United States forces have boarded a sanctioned oil tanker in the North Atlantic after a weekslong pursuit, according to officials.

They say the vessel, now called the Marinera, is part of a shadow fleet moving oil for Venezuela, Russia and Iran in violation of US sanctions.

The tanker was previously named Bella-1 and recently switched its registration to Russia. Its crew reportedly even painted a Russian flag on the hull.

The US Coast Guard first tried to intercept the ship in December as it sailed toward Venezuela, where Washington has imposed a naval blockade on sanctioned oil shipments.

When the vessel refused boarding, it crossed the Atlantic, prompting a chase.

On Tuesday, Russia's Foreign Ministry said it was "following with concern" the US pursuit of the tanker.

"For reasons unclear to us, the Russian vessel is receiving heightened attention from the US and NATO militarism attention that is clearly disproportionate to its peaceful status," the ministry said.

Moscow demands humane treatment of its citizens aboard seized tanker

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it is demanding the United States respect the rights of its citizens aboard a seized oil tanker in the Atlantic.

"Given incoming information about the presence of Russian citizens among the crew, we demand that the United States ensure humane and dignified treatment, strictly respect their rights and interests, and not impede their speedy return to their homeland," the ministry said, according to the Russian state news agency TASS.

The statement did not specify how many Russian nationals were aboard the Russian-flagged tanker, which US forces had pursued from the Venezuelan coast.
