Scientists have been forced to rethink the intelligence of cattle after an Austrian cow named Veronika displayed an impressive – and until now undocumented – knack for tool use.Witgar Wiegele, an organic farmer and baker from a small town in Carinthia near the Italian border, keeps Veronika as a pet and noticed that she occasionally played with sticks and used them to scratch her body.

Wiegle, who said Veronika recognised family members’ voices and hurried to meet them when they called, began playing with pieces of wood years ago, then worked out how to scratch herself with sticks.

Word soon got around and before long a video clip of the cow’s behaviour reached biologists in Vienna who specialise in animal intelligence. They immediately grasped the importance of the footage. “It was a cow using an actual tool,” said Dr Antonio Osuna Mascaró at the city’s University of Veterinary Medicine. “We got everything ready and jumped in the car to visit.”

Armed with a deck brush, Osuna Mascaró and his colleague Alice Auersperg set about testing Veronika’s skills. Through a series of field trials, she could not only pick up the broom, but wield it according to the job at hand. If the broom was at an awkward angle, Veronika used her tongue to reposition it before clamping it in place with her teeth.

Veronika favoured the bristled end of the broom to scratch the tough skin on her back. But she switched to the smooth handle and scratched more gently when the itch was on more delicate, lower body areas such as her udders and belly, according to the study in Current Biology.

As the scientists write in the study: “She did not fashion tools like the cow in Gary Larson’s cartoon, but she selected, adjusted and used one with notable dexterity and flexibility. Perhaps the real absurdity lies not in imagining a tool-using cow, but in assuming such a thing could never exist.”

Dingoes on K’gari island to be euthanised after death of tourist

Environment minister Andrew Powell said on Sunday that an entire pack of 10 animals would be euthanised.

The group were linked to the death of Piper James, 19, on Monday. An autopsy released on Friday found physical evidence consistent with drowning and injuries consistent with dingo bites, but “pre-mortem dingo bite marks” were “not likely to have caused immediate death”.

The island, about 380 kilometres north of the Queensland capital, Brisbane, is home to an estimated 200 dingoes, which are sacred to the Indigenous Butchulla people, who call them wongari, and are specifically mentioned in K’gari’s world heritage listing.

K’gari is a national park and owned through native title. The Butchulla people co-manage the island in collaboration with the state government.

Six animals were destroyed on Saturday, but Royan said the traditional owners of the island hadn’t been consulted on the decision or even told about it until Sunday, in spite of the island’s management plan.

“I was dumbfounded,” she said. “This government has no respect for First Nations people. It’s a disgrace”.

Members of the public, and professional pest control companies, brought 5,195 of the large, invasive green iguanas to FWC collection centers, where they were euthanized.

Almost all of the roundup occurred in south Florida, where the creatures started falling from trees on Saturday. The tropical iguanas’ systems shut down below 45F, but they can remain alive for days, stiff and motionless until temperatures rise.

Temperatures in south Florida, which reached their lowest since at least 2010, rose again significantly by Wednesday, with many thousands more fallen iguanas that were not collected warming up and recovering from their extended torpor.

Bob’s former owner died in 2011. After her burial, the brown long-haired mixed-breed dog reportedly refused to leave her side at a cemetery in Taboão da Serra, about 12 miles from the state capital, São Paulo.

Relatives are said to have tried several times to take the dog away, but he always returned and was eventually adopted by cemetery staff, who provided him with a kennel and regularly fed, bathed and vaccinated him.

Gravedigger Bob gained national fame for accompanying other funeral processions while reportedly carrying a small ball in his mouth, trying to play with visitors – something many saw as a gesture of comfort in moments of grief.

In 2021, after leaving the cemetery grounds, the dog was struck by a motorcycle and died.

There was widespread public commotion, and, as there was no legal provision at the time, the Taboão da Serra city council made an exception and allowed it to be buried alongside its former owner.
