NJ Transit plans to jack up train tickets from NYC to MetLife up by a maddening 775% during World Cup
By Chris Nesi
Published April 14, 2026, 12:22 p.m. ET
NJ Transit plans to raise prices to an eye-popping $100 for riders traveling from New York Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for the eight FIFA World Cup games being held in the Garden State.
The 18-mile trip from Manhattan to the East Rutherford, NJ, stadium, including a stop at Secaucus station, typically runs $12.90, but the state’s largest transit provider plans to charge an egregious 775% premium for tickets during the World Cup.
The New York Times first reported the news, citing sources familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity.
An NJT spokesperson told the outlet Monday, “The ticket prices for match day travel have not been finalized and any reference to cost would be unconfirmed speculation. However, as the governor clearly stated at an earlier press conference this morning with NJ Transit, the cost for the eight matches will not be borne by our regular commuters.”
Gov. Mikie Sherrill said at the press conference, “We are not going to be paying for moving the people who are viewing the World Cup on the back of New Jersey taxpayers and New Jersey commuters.”
The astronomical ticket prices will reportedly apply across the board, even on tickets for seniors, children and disabled passengers, which are typically discounted.
The transit system is expected to make a final decision about World Cup train ticket pricing in the coming days, the outlet writes.

Nghe nói họ còn cấm đường, phong toả vòng quanh sân vận động như Trâm phong toả Họoc mút, bắt khán giả phải tới bằng xe điện ngầm để tính giá vé cắt cổ. Ai biểu ham zui, coi ở nhà cho phẻ hông chịu.

New Jersey governor hits out at Fifa: ‘They should pay’
https://www.theguardian.com/football...rsey-world-cup
Có tiền mua vé đi coi đá banh thì chắc có tiền mua vé đi xe tới sân banh. Mai mốt Olympics ở Los Angeles cũng tính đủ tiền xe mỗi chuyến.On Thursday, Sherrill did not clarify the cost of transport during the World Cup but blamed Fifa for any price rises.
“You may have seen some recent headlines about transportation costs for World Cup games in New Jersey,” Sherrill said in a post on social media. “So let me tell you exactly where things stand.
“Our administration inherited an agreement where Fifa is providing $0 for transportation to the World Cup. Zero. That leaves New Jersey Transit with a $48m to safely get 40,000 fans to and from every game. At the same time, Fifa is making $11bn off of this World Cup, and charging fans up to $10,000 for a single ticket for the final. I won’t stick New Jersey commuters for that tab for years to come, that’s not fair. So here’s the bottom line: Fifa should pay for the rides, but if they don’t I’m not going to let New Jersey commuters get taken for one.”
NJ Transit officials moved to formalize that position on Wednesday, when the agency’s board unanimously approved a resolution empowering chief executive Kris Kolluri to set World Cup rail fares at levels sufficient to “cover any and all costs” associated with transporting an estimated 40,000 fans to each of the eight matches.
Money money money…
Must be funny in the FIFA’s purse.

New Jersey World Cup transit prices: $150 by train, $225 to park
https://www.theguardian.com/football...-ticket-prices
The price for a round-trip ticket from New York’s Penn Station to MetLife Stadium is typically $12.90. Reports this week of the elevenfold increase were met with outcry from fans and sparked a back-and-forth between New Jersey’s governor, Mikie Sherrill, and world football’s governing body, with costs mounting across the board, including parking priced as high as $225 at the mall adjacent to the stadium.
Fans will be required to buy a special NJ Transit World Cup ticket that includes a wristband for return travel, with departures from Penn Station assigned in time blocks and multiple security checkpoints along the route.
This week, Sherrill said it would cost the state $48m to safely transport an estimated 40,000 fans to and from each match, and framed the ticket increases as necessary to avoid taxpayers shouldering those costs.

Iran Still Waiting for Visas To Travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup
Iran’s national football team departed this Monday for Turkey to begin its final training camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, although the squad has still not received the visas required to enter the United States, where it will play its group stage matches.
Head coach Amir Ghalenoei confirmed that the team will travel to Antalya with a preliminary roster of 30 players, which must be reduced to the final 26-man squad before the official start of the tournament on June 11.
The Iranian manager expressed hope that every member of the delegation will obtain their travel documents before the team departs for North America. Meanwhile, Iran national team director Mehdi Mohammad Nabi stated that the federation remains in constant communication with FIFA and expects the issue to be resolved within the next two weeks.
The uncertainty continues with less than one month remaining before Iran’s World Cup debut, scheduled for June 15 against New Zealand in Los Angeles. Team Melli will later face Belgium and Egypt in Group G.
Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj recently held a meeting in Istanbul with FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström to discuss the visa situation. Following the meeting, Taj said he was satisfied with the discussions and reiterated FIFA’s intention to guarantee Iran’s participation in the tournament.
However, the situation remains sensitive due to ongoing diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States. The Iranian federation has reportedly conditioned its participation in the World Cup on several guarantees related to security, transportation, respect for national symbols, and the approval of travel visas for the entire delegation.
The main obstacle reportedly involves possible restrictions on federation officials or technical staff linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which the United States classifies as a terrorist organization.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that there would be no issue allowing Iranian players into the country. However, he clarified that certain administrative or technical members could face entry restrictions if Washington determines they have ties to the Revolutionary Guard.
For his part, FIFA president Gianni Infantino publicly stated that Iran would be welcomed “with enthusiasm” in North America and described the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ as “the most inclusive sporting event in history.”

While the visa situation remains unresolved, Iran will continue its preparation camp in Turkey with training sessions and friendly matches ahead of the tournament, maintaining hopes of participating without complications in its seventh FIFA World Cup.
