Measles outbreak kills more than 500 children in Bangladesh




DHAKA, Bangladesh: A measles outbreak in Bangladesh has killed more than 500 children, government data showed Saturday (May 23), marking the country's deadliest surge in decades of the preventable disease.

Hospitals in the capital Dhaka have been overwhelmed with cases and have set up dedicated wards to take patients, but are scrambling with a shortage of intensive care beds.

Deaths are still rising, with 13 children dying in the past 24 hours alone, taking the toll from the disaster to 512, according to health department figures since Mar 15.

The South Asian nation has rolled out a mass vaccination drive to combat the outbreak, and UNICEF country chief Rana Flowers said this week that the campaign has now reached 18 million children.

Graves Dug Up to Make Way for Trump’s Golf Course

Vietnam is demolishing graves and moving its dead to make way for a Trump Organization golf course.

The Financial Times reported that a gravesite in the Chau Ninh commune of the Hung Yen province has already begun to be demolished so bodies can be exhumed ahead of the construction of the $1.5 billion leisure development.

Trump’s son Eric has called the new resort “the envy of all of Asia and of the entire world,” but residents in the agricultural community in northern Vietnam are now leaving large “X” marks painted on the graves of their loved ones to show they have already removed their remains.

Hoang Do, 72, was given 70 million dong [$2,660] in exchange for removing his son and parents’ remains.

“It’s painful,” he told the FT. “I’m outraged by the compensation price.”

Hoang Anh Xa has five family members in the cemetery, the FT reports.

“The grave of my great-grandparents has been there since 1967, before the establishment of this country [after the Vietnam War], so why should I move them?”

The farmland there is fertile, and now people face losing their livelihoods.

“I won’t be able to find another job,” said Xa, 50. “We do not oppose the policy of the Party and the government. We just ask for one thing only, the land price has to be [higher].”

U.S. relations with Vietnam were normalized in the 1990s, and despite Vietnam still having a communist government, its economy is market-led and places great importance on its relations with the U.S. and the West.

Last year, Reuters reported that farmers were being offered as little as $12 for 10 square feet of land. The news agency said that one woman was being offered nothing more than the equivalent of $3,200 and rice provisions to leave her farm behind.

Speaking at the time, Huong, 50, said: “The whole village is worried about this project because it will take our land and leave us jobless.”

She was offered less than the national average wage to leave her 2152.78 square-foot plot.

Vietnam is keen to please Trump, several reports have claimed, and its export-heavy economy sells vast quantities of goods to the U.S.

Last year, Trump threatened to impose one of the highest tariffs on Vietnam at 46 percent, although that was later reduced to 20 percent.

The Daily Beast has contacted the Trump Organization for comment.

US and Iran exchange fire after American patrol helicopter downed in Hormuz

The United States says it's completed a series of strikes against Iran, which has retaliated by launching drones and missiles.

The US military said it targeted air defence systems, ground control stations and radar sites in response to the downing of an American helicopter on Monday.

In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched strikes on 21 targets at US bases in the region, one in Bahrain and the other in Jordan, while Kuwait's army said it was also intercepting an attack.

The US has described its strikes as "a proportional response" for the Apache helicopter downing, while the IRGC described the attacks as "vicious".

The course has emerged as part of a broader effort to improve drone literacy among the public in Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy that faces a growing military threat from China.

The number of registered drones in Taiwan surpassed 39,000 in December, according to Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Administration, which lowered the minimum age for drone registration to 14 in 2024. Some high schools in Taipei have started holding summer camps to teach students how to assemble drones from scratch and use them for search-and-rescue operations.

All of South Korea’s military forces will be trained as drone operators in a sweeping overhaul of its warfare strategy, the defence minister has said. “All soldiers should be able to use drones like a second personal firearm,” Ahn Gyu-back, who heads the defence ministry in Seoul, said on Friday.

The plan envisages training 500,000 authorised military personnel across the army, navy, air force and marines to become “drone warriors”, the ministry said.

Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East had shown that drones were now a “gamechanger on the battlefield”, Ahn said. “Low-cost drones operated in large numbers are fundamentally changing the nature of warfare,” Ahn said, warning North Korea was also continuing to develop its weapons capabilities, increasing threats to military and civilian facilities in the South.

North Korea Recommends Dog Soup During Heat Waves

SEOUL, Aug 7 (Reuters) - As *the Korean Peninsula swelters through a heat wave, North Korean state media has touted everything from dog-meat soup to chicken broth as ways to cope, while portraying Kim Jong Un as a leader who endures harsh conditions alongside his people.

State television reported on Thursday the temperature hit 36.7 degrees Celsius (98.1 degrees Fahrenheit) in Pyongyang, ​the highest since weather recordings began in the country's capital.

With the accompanying string of tropical nights, state media has devoted ​unusual attention to the hottest weeks of the year, known locally as sambok, or the dog days of ⁠summer.
Among the more eye-catching recommendations is dog-meat soup, reflecting a traditional belief that it helps people withstand summer heat.

In a health feature published ​on August 2, ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun quoted a doctor at Pyongyang General Hospital recommending cooling foods such as watermelon, cucumbers and ​mung beans, as well as "nutritious foods" including dog-meat soup, fish porridge and red-bean porridge.

The newspaper devoted a separate feature to dog-meat soup, describing it as a traditional summertime food and reviving an old saying that "even if dog-meat soup spills on the top of your foot during the dog days of summer, it becomes ​medicine."

The report noted that a national dog-meat cooking competition had been held earlier this year.

The state Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday also ​praised samgyetang, a chicken soup stuffed with ginseng, glutinous rice and jujubes, reporting that Pyongyang restaurants were attracting customers seeking relief from the heat.

Korean Central Television *this week ⁠also aired segments on managing health during extreme heat, recommending drinks to hydrate and offering advice on swimming and outdoor exercise.
North Korea has not released data on any heat-related deaths. Neighbouring South Korea has reported more than 20 deaths related to the heat wave.

SWEATING FOR THE PEOPLE

Alongside health advice, state media has repeatedly returned to a familiar propaganda theme - Kim's willingness to endure the same oppressive weather faced by ordinary North ​Koreans.

Rodong Sinmun this week revisited a ​2013 summer inspection of a ⁠construction site, where Kim's clothes were said to have become soaked with sweat.

When an official urged him to avoid such trips during this time of year, Kim replied that "even if the weather is unbearably hot, ​work that must be done for the people should be done," according to the report.

The newspaper ​also recounted how Kim ⁠pressed on through steep mountain terrain and a torrential downpour during a 2018 trip to find a suitable site for a hot-spring resort.
Another article recalled Kim visiting a pickled seafood factory at the time when temperatures reportedly reached 39 C, portraying him inspecting sweltering fermentation rooms while stressing food ⁠quality and ​hygiene.

There have been no details, however, of what Kim is doing during the current ​heat wave.

State television has also shown crowds packing beaches and swimming pools at the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone, Kim's flagship east coast tourism project.

State media have also ​reported that Pyongyang's water parks have been filled with visitors seeking relief from the heat.

Thailand school shooting: eight killed

A Thai teenager killed his grandparents before opening fire at his school, where he shot five people dead and took his own life, police have said, in an attack that has shaken a country struggling to deal with gun violence.

The 14-year-old wounded more than 30 people in the ⁠shooting at the prestigious Debsirin Nonthaburi school northwest of Bangkok. Nine people were in a critical condition, the Thai health department said.

The suspected attacker fired at least 26 bullets with a gun belonging to his grandfather, and was found with 34 additional ammunition rounds.

Thailand has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in south-east Asia, and in 2017 the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey placed the country 13th worldwide for small-gun possession.
